At the time, in 2020, England’s sole youth gender clinic was in disarray. The waiting list had swelled, leaving many young patients waiting years for an appointment. Staff members who said they felt pressure to approve children for puberty-blocking drugs had filed whistle-blower complaints that had spilled into public view.

CNN —An influential group of medical experts, the US Preventive Services Task Force, recommended last week that most women receive a mammogram starting at age 40. People should now starting getting mammograms at age 40, according to new recommendations. According to a study in the journal Lancet Oncology, the mortality from breast cancer could be lowered by starting mammograms earlier, at age 40. A woman who has a sister, mother or other first-degree relative with breast cancer has double the average risk of breast cancer. Wen: Someone who has a family history of breast cancer may be recommended for genetic testing.

A college of supposedly conservative cardinals elected a surprisingly liberal pope. It seemed as though liberal Catholicism had been merely hibernating, awaiting a new pope, a new spring. But lately, in both Rome and the United States, I’ve had conversations with well-informed Catholics in which the old conservative confidence has made a comeback. The fear that the next pope might be another liberalizer, younger and more ambitious than Francis, has largely receded. This new confidence reflects a specific reading of the waning years (or what are probably the waning years) of the Francis pontificate.

CNN —Has your doctor quizzed you about your level of physical activity? If so, you can thank Exercise is Medicine, a global health initiative managed by the American College of Sports Medicine. Created in 2007, the initiative encourages health care providers to assess patients’ physical activity during visits, plus include regular exercise when designing care plans. Health care providers can impact patient health by routinely assessing physical activity at every interaction.
