Smith was born with severe hearing loss in both of his ears and relies on lip-reading to understand what his volleyball teammates and coaches are saying. But his disability comes with its own unique set of challenges, one which Smith describes as “hard work. Smith began playing volleyball aged 14, initially as a summertime hobby outside of his regular sporting passion: Soccer. Speraw describes discovering Smith as like “finding a diamond in a rough.” He also said that Smith’s disability never came into play.

An Italian boxer forfeited her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds on Thursday, refusing to continue to fight an Algerian opponent who had been banned from a women’s event last year in a dispute related to her gender. The Italian boxer, Angela Carini, withdrew after her Algerian opponent, Imane Khelif, landed a powerful blow that appeared to strike Carini square in the face, knocking her head to the left. Khelif was permitted to compete at the Olympics even though she has been barred from some women’s competitions for not meeting eligibility requirements to compete in women’s events. In Tokyo, the city government is even releasing its own dating app, part of a campaign called Tokyo Futari Story ("futari" means couple). Bouke de Vries, an associate professor of philosophy at Ghent University in Belgium who's studied dating apps, argues that state-run dating apps are at least in theory better positioned to help people find partners without spending too much money or time in the process. Last year, Japan's most popular dating app, the Match Group-owned Pairs, began collaborating with several prefectures and cities.
