MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Jury selection was scheduled to begin Monday in the federal trial of three former Memphis officers charged with violating the civil rights of Tyre Nichols, the 29-year-old man whose fatal beating was caught on police cameras while also triggering protests and calls for police reform. Officers caught up with Nichols and pummeled him in a Memphis neighborhood, police video showed. An autopsy report showed Nichols died from blows to the head and that the manner of death was homicide. The three officers now facing trial, along with Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr., were fired after Nichols’ death for violating Memphis Police Department policies. Mills and Martin both have pleaded guilty in federal court and they could testify in the trial.

BOSTON — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for threatening to kill a group of Asian Americans and repeatedly hitting one of them with his car. “This defendant targeted this man solely because he was Asian American. He yelled “go back to China” and threatened to kill them before repeatedly hitting one of them, a Vietnamese man, with his car. There had been a dramatic spike in verbal, physical and online attacks against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, which was thought to have originated in China. “There are bad people who do bad things and good people that do a bad thing,” the attorney wrote in the sentencing memorandum.

A 37-year-old Tennessee man was charged over alleged social media threats against President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Barack Obama, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. Kyl Alton Hall was indicted Tuesday on two counts of threatening a sitting president or vice president and one count of a threat to a former president. The U.S. Secret Service investigated the case, which will be prosecuted by the national security and civil rights unit in the local U.S. attorney’s office. A spokesperson for the Secret Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The charges come the same week that all three officials — Biden, Harris and Obama — appeared in Chicago to speak at the Democratic National Convention, where Harris accepted her party’s presidential nomination.

A judge in Kentucky has dismissed core charges against two former Louisville police officials involved in the raid that ended in Breonna Taylor's death. Judge Charles R. Simpson III of western Kentucky's U.S. District Court on Thursday said Taylor's death was triggered by the actions of her boyfriend, who opened fire when police arrived outside her Louisville apartment March 13, 2020. "Those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor’s death," he said in a statement at the time. A second former Memphis police officer is expected to change his not guilty plea on Friday in connection to alleged civil rights violations that ended in the beating death of Tyre Nichols, court documents revealed. A change of plea hearing for former officer Emmitt Martin has been set for 2 p.m. CT in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Mark Norris, records showed. Back in November, another former Memphis officer, Desmond Mills Jr., changed his plea to guilty to federal charges of excessive force and obstruction of justice. CNN —A second former Memphis police officer facing federal civil rights charges in the violent arrest and beating death of Tyre Nichols changed his plea to guilty on Friday in federal court. Mills and Martin are among five former officers charged in the death of Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. A federal court in Louisiana has dealt a serious blow to the Biden administration’s effort to protect communities heavily affected by toxic industrial pollution. Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act allows the E.P.A. to investigate whether state programs that receive federal money are discriminating on the basis of race, color or national origin. But the judge’s ruling effectively means that the federal government is limited to taking action against specific agency decisions that are intentionally discriminatory. That means the state cannot be held liable for actions like allowing several chemical plants, refineries and other industrial operations in minority communities.

A high school English teacher is suing a Wisconsin school district, alleging it did not renew his contract last year because he refused to use the preferred names of two transgender students. Argyle School District Superintendent Randy Refsland said in an email Tuesday night that he could not comment because the matter was being litigated in court. But after one of the students expressed unhappiness with the situation — the student's father was described as a fellow district teacher — the district demanded adherence to the policy of using students' preferred names and pronouns, according to the suit. Greul said that this fight over first names and pronouns will be crucial for "everyday Americans across the country." A 2022 report on pronouns by the Minnesota Department of Health says that the correct use of preferred pronouns "saves lives."

Tennessee is one of some two dozen states that have passed laws limiting gender-affirming care for young people. The Tennessee law, called the Protecting Children From Gender Mutilation Act, prohibits the use of puberty-blocking medications for transgender adolescents, for example, but permits them for children who go into puberty at an early age. It bans the use of sex hormones like testosterone in transgender adolescents but allows it for other health issues, such as for children assigned male at birth. It bans gender-affirming surgeries for transgender adolescents — such surgeries are extremely rare — but allows similar surgical procedures that affirm the sex a child is assigned at birth, even on infants who are intersex. The Supreme Court ruled in 2020 — somewhat surprisingly given its conservative majority — that differential treatment of transgender and gay people is impermissible under civil rights law.

In December 2018, the unindicted co-conspirator allegedly contacted Turbett to help with her business dispute. Turbett and Hart flew from Australia to Los Angeles, where they met with Cozart and Lankford to plan out the sham raid, prosecutors said. During the hoax raid, the defendants forced the victim and his family into one room. The unindicted co-conspirator paid Turbett’s company about $419,813 and emailed Turbett to thank him for a “very good job,” prosecutors said.
