A dog sits in front of the New York Stock Exchange during Chewy Inc.'s initial public offering, June 14, 2019. Shares of Chewy surged more than 13% in extended trading Wednesday after the pet retailer posted earnings that beat Wall Street's estimates. Sales rose to $2.78 billion, up 14.7% from $2.43 billion a year earlier. Net sales per active customer and sales from autoship customers reached record highs in the quarter, Chewy said in a press release. The earnings beat comes after the retailer posted its first annual profit at the close of fiscal 2022 earlier this year, but noted the pet industry was seeing softness in discretionary and hard goods categories, which carry higher margins than consumables such as pet food.

Yet despite declining sales, Nordstrom stressed its progress with managing inventory, cutting costs and drawing shoppers, especially to the off-price brand Nordstrom Rack. Sales at Nordstrom Rack improved late in the quarter, with the strongest performance in April, the retailer said in a news release. Nordstrom 's fiscal first-quarter sales topped Wall Street's expectations on Wednesday, even as the retailer reported a spending drop and predicted slower sales in the coming months. The company's total revenue, including credit card sales, fell about 11% from $3.57 billion in the year-ago quarter, but surpassed Wall Street's expectations. Net sales at Nordstrom's namesake stores decreased 11.4% year over year, while net sales for Nordstrom Rack dropped 11.9%.

Unlimited access to veterinary telehealth via video or text will be available to Walmart+ subscribers beginning on Tuesday, when Walmart is expected to announce the partnership publicly. Walmart's expansion into pet telehealth signals the largest U.S. retailer is ready to grow its share of the market. Traditional pet-only retailers like Chewy and Petco have already been investing in pet health care to better compete with big-box stores. Others have argued pet telehealth helps bridge the access to care as pet owners contend with a nationwide veterinary shortage and swaths of pet health deserts across rural America.

The success or failure of the Nordstrom Rack turnaround effort could shape the company's future. Those chains such as T.J.Maxx , Ross Stores and Burlington Stores , have opened more stores and wooed new customers, driving higher foot traffic than Nordstrom Rack has seen. Nordstrom Rack stores outnumber the company's namesake stores, with 241 locations across the country, according to company filings. Nordstrom Rack stores accounted for more than 40% of new customers in 2022, CEO Erik Nordstrom said on the March earnings call. As it pins its growth hopes on the off-price locations, Nordstrom has turned Rack stores into e-commerce hubs, too.

Los Angeles Is a Doughnut Town

The Donut Hole, in La Puente, doesn’t sell the very best doughnuts in the Los Angeles area, but I love going there. Driving through its absurd, gigantic fiberglass doughnut — a pristine example of mimetic architecture — is a brief, giddy and almost spiritual experience. An edge, architectural or otherwise, is practically required in the unusually saturated, competitive doughnut market of Southern California. It might be a glamorous seasonal doughnut, like the strawberry-stuffed beasts you can find at the Donut Man, in Glendora, from February to September. I am consistently pleased by the simple chocolate glazed at Colorado Donuts — though if I’m with my nephews, the chewy, pull-apart, rainbow-colored mochi doughnuts from Mochi Dochi are always the stronger choice.
Nordstrom on Monday said it has tapped former Nike operating chief Eric Sprunk to join its board, as the company faces pressure from an activist investor. Sprunk, who was Nike's COO from 2013 to 2020, will join the board immediately, the company said. In a news release, Nordstrom board member Brad Tilden highlighted Sprunk's "track record of driving e-commerce growth and large-scale transformations within a complex global business." Nordstrom did not say in the news release whether the board appointment was board of an agreement with Cohen. Net sales for the company's namesake banner decreased 2.4%, and net sales for its off-price banner, Nordstrom Rack, dropped 8.1% in the quarter versus the year-ago period.
A Pretzel Recipe That Won’t Tie You in Knots

In New York City, you can find a pretzel within minutes of a craving — in warmed glass cases on corner street carts, all over transit hubs, even in the odd department store. They vary in quality but are often forgettable, something to stave off hunger until a better snack presents itself. But a big pretzel with a soft, dense middle, chewy ends and the perfect combination of tang and salt? That’s a little harder to come by. Unless you make it yourself.

A Covid hangover is upon us, which means we just don't do things we did during lockdown, CNBC's Jim Cramer said on Friday. Pets may be subtle casualties of the current "long on money, short on time" spending mode, Cramer said. "Now you have to be more selective with the pet plays," Cramer said. Pure pet plays like Petco and Chewy have become "two of the most controversial stocks in the entire market," Cramer said. Smucker is also "another good safety play with a pet food kicker" that can work its way higher, Cramer said.

The retailers, which both released their quarterly earnings on Wednesday, began investing heavily into pet health when the pandemic-fueled pet boom saw 23 million American households welcome a new animal into their homes. The boom turned the overall pet market into a $123.6 billion dollar powerhouse in 2021, and it's expected to grow. Pet health care – and the high margins that come with it – is a crucial component to that overall market. It changed its name to Petco Health and Wellness Company in 2020. Pet adoptions surged during the pandemic, triggering a surge in demand for pet goods.
GameStop surge ignores basic rule of value

NEW YORK, March 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - GameStop (GME.N) investors sent the company’s shares up 40% on Wednesday morning after fourth-quarter results showed it had swung to a net profit. That suggests the company that counts Chewy Founder Ryan Cohen as its chair has put some of its meme-fueled fundraising to use. Unfortunately, investors have forgotten that with such a surge, GameStop will have to grow into a new valuation. The chain reported net profit of $48 million compared with a loss of $148 million in the same quarter a year ago. They do not reflect the views of Reuters News, which, under the Trust Principles, is committed to integrity, independence, and freedom from bias.
The retailer had been working to steer itself back to profitability, and got there in part by cutting costs. Selling, general and administrative expenses came in at $453.4 million for the quarter, or 20.4% of sales, compared to $538.9 million, or 23.9% of sales, in the year-earlier period. GameStop did not provide financial guidance and has not done so since the early days of the pandemic. For the quarter ended Jan. 28 , net sales dropped slightly to $2.23 billion from $2.25 billion in last year's fourth quarter. "GameStop is a much healthier business today than it was at the start of 2021," he said.
Two things will capture all the market's attention in the coming week: The Federal Reserve's March meeting and the government's ongoing attempt to quell worries about the banking system. If it raises, Powell should speak softly; no raise and Powell should strongly remind the market that the work isn't done. Still, for the week, U.S. stocks fared better, with the S & P 500 rising 1.5% and the Nasdaq gaining 4.5%. On Thursday, initial jobless claims for the week ended March 11 came in at 192,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the prior week and below the expected 205,000.
