May 19 (Reuters) - U.S. cloud-based restaurant manager Restaurant365 has turned a 'unicorn' after a $135 million funding round, the company said on Friday. Start-up funding space, which is reeling from liquidity crunch since last year, has started to see some signs of relief. Earlier in the week, Reuters reported that U.S. property insurer SageSure achieved an unicorn status after closing a $250-million funding round. "L Catterton has deep experience investing in world-class restaurant brands globally," says Ian Friedman, Partner at L Catterton who will join Restaurant365's board. "The primary driver of this round is uniting with two strategic investors so intimately tied to the restaurant industry," the company said.

BARCELONA, May 2 (Reuters Breakingviews) - High-street retailers are facing a heavy bill to weather the cost-of-living crisis. The cost of heating stores and staff requests for pay rises are squeezing operating margins at top players like H&M (HMb.ST) and Next (NXT.L). Shrinking disposable income is making it hard for these retailers to boost sales to protect margins. Most bricks-and-mortar retailers trade on higher multiples than they did before the war in Ukraine sparked soaring inflation. But that leaves a squeezed middle of retailers like H&M exposed to the brunt of the retail crisis.

Overall, I can see why Cava is preparing to go public now. Restaurant visits are surging and Cava needs the capital to bring its brand to the masses. They have a captive audience in Gen Z, a generation looking for brands that share their eating habits and ethos.

It's the first restaurant company so far this year to take the first step toward a public market debut, following a drought of IPOs in 2022. In 2018, it bought Zoes Kitchen for $300 million, taking the chain private. The company is converting Zoes locations into new Cava restaurants, expanding its footprint. Officials at the crypto giant FTX have moved all digital assets offline as they investigate possible theft of crypto assets following their bankruptcy filing, their general counsel announced late Friday. That followed an earlier tweet from Miller that said officials were "investigating abnormalities with wallet movements related to consolidation of ftx balances across exchanges — unclear facts as other movements not clear." “FTX has been hacked,” an account administrator in the FTX Support Telegram channel wrote in a message, according to CoinDesk.
