As his rivals prepare for the two-hour showdown on Fox News, Trump’s campaign is attempting to counter-program the debate. But Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr. and other surrogates planned to travel to Milwaukee, where they would have had opportunities to weigh in on national broadcasts before and after the debate in the spin room. Ahead of the debate, some candidates are offering previews of their lines of attack – including criticizing Trump for choosing not to participate. “Every one of us who have qualified for that debate stage ought to be on the stage willing to square off and answer those tough questions,” Pence said. Overall, 42% say Trump is their first choice, followed by 19% supporting DeSantis.

Ron DeSantis in a major new poll of likely Republican caucusgoers in Iowa released Monday. Trump garnered the support of 42% of respondents, while DeSantis came in second with 19%. In an overture to Iowa voters, Trump also asserted without evidence that he "saved" ethanol and popular entitlement programs. While Trump and DeSantis share a similar overall approval in the state — 63% for Trump and 61% for DeSantis — the Florida governor's support appears to be much shakier than the former president's.

Some Republicans have urged the party to move on from Trump's election claims ahead of 2024. "I do not believe the election was stolen," Scott said during a town hall meeting in Davenport, Iowa. While Scott is directly challenging Trump for the GOP presidential nomination, both men have long had a friendly relationship.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s support appears to have softened following his indictment and arrest on federal charges, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Most Americans approve of Trump’s indictment stemming from his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office, even as 71% say politics played a role in that charging decision. Overall, 47% of Republicans and Republican-leaning registered voters say Trump is their first choice for the party’s nomination for president, down from 53% in a May CNN poll. A 54% majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters say that Trump’s conduct doesn’t matter much to them as they consider his candidacy, because a president’s effectiveness matters more. Most Republican and Republican-leaning voters who support Trump for the nomination say he did nothing wrong in this case (58%) and just 3% that he acted illegally.

Washington CNN —Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie said Sunday it was a “useless idea” to force 2024 GOP contenders to sign a pledge to back the party’s ultimate nominee in order to participate in primary debates. “It’s only in the era of Donald Trump that you need somebody to sign something on a pledge. Trump, as a candidate in 2015, did not rule out an independent run for president at a debate in Cleveland. His indictment, brimming with details on Trump’s disastrously lax handling of classified materials, shocked many government veterans. (The DOJ has closed its investigation into Pence, while the special counsel probe of Biden’s handling of classified documents is ongoing.) “If this indictment is true, if what it says is actually the case, President Trump was incredibly reckless with our national security,” Haley said on Fox News.
