If you're bracing for year-end mutual fund distributions, swapping assets for exchange-traded funds could sidestep the capital gains payout for 2024 and beyond. Some mutual funds distribute yearly capital gains to shareholders, typically in November and December. By comparison, most ETFs don't have an annual payout, which helps reduce ongoing taxes. Typically, investors incur capital gains when trading profitable mutual funds for ETFs in a brokerage account. Depending on their income, certain investors can "capital gain harvest" — strategically selling profitable assets while in a lower tax bracket — to swap mutual funds for ETFs, said Tommy Lucas, a certified financial planner and enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando, Florida.

On a more micro level, many ETF investors can sidestep the fund-level capital gains taxes incurred by many investors who own mutual fund shares, experts said. However, mutual fund managers can also generate capital-gains taxes within a fund itself when they buy and sell securities. Costs are lowThe first ETF was an index fund: the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY ). Index funds, also known as passively managed funds, track a market index like the S&P 500 . Investors have equated ETFs with index funds since their inception, even though there are also index mutual funds, experts said.

A judge in Georgia's Fulton County struck down the state's six-week abortion ban Monday, allowing the procedure to resume and making it legal up to 22 weeks of pregnancy. The state law, known as the LIFE Act, was signed by Republican Gov. The Georgia Supreme Court, however, soon took up the case and allowed it to remain in effect. The law has no "definition of 'health records.' And no mention of any notice to be provided to the 'woman' whose 'health records' have been made 'available,'" the judge wrote.

Palace of Laeken, Belgium CNN —Pope Francis has pledged to root out the “scourge” of clerical sexual abuse after Belgium’s prime minster urged him in unusually frank terms to take concrete action. Francis was addressing political leaders on Friday at the official residence of the King of Belgium, a country where devastating clerical abuse scandals have erupted in recent years. Before he spoke, both the Belgian king and Prime Minister Alexander de Croo raised the issue in their speeches, the latter speaking directly to the pope, in remarks that underline how the abuse crisis has come to dominate Belgian national attention. “This is the shame, the shame that we must all take in hand today and ask for forgiveness and solve the problem, the shame of abuse, of child abuse,” the pope said. The scandal has loomed large over the pope’s trip, during which Francis was also expected to meet 15 abuse survivors.

The high price of weight-loss drugs is frustrating for patients who can't access them, a doctor said. Patients struggle to afford these drugs, leading to cycling, rationing, or using risky alternatives. AdvertisementPharmaceutical companies are facing a new wave of criticism for the high price of groundbreaking weight-loss drugs. The latest generation of these class of drugs, medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound, are once-weekly injections. The competitive pressure will also help drive prices lower as companies aim to attract consumers back to their brand with cheaper options for weight-loss drugs.

Two years after an Alabama prisoner was spared when staff members struggled to execute him by lethal injection, officials plan to try again Thursday — using the rare method of nitrogen gas. He filed a federal lawsuit in March seeking to halt his execution, citing the state's past execution failures and concerns that the method of nitrogen hypoxia would add pain and prolong death. "The resolution of this case confirms that Alabama's nitrogen hypoxia system is reliable and humane," Marshall said in a previous statement. Alabama officials have insisted in court filings that nitrogen hypoxia is "painless because it causes unconsciousness in seconds" and death within minutes. "Whether by lethal injection or nitrogen suffocation, the myth of the 'humane execution' is a lie fewer and fewer people believe," Foa said in a statement.

The judge also sentenced Khatallah to 10 years for the fourth crime and ordered him to serve that time after completing the 12-year sentence. Nvidia might have to look outside of its artificial intelligence empire to acquire some key data center-related technologies, according to Susquehanna Financial Group. Analyst Christopher Rolland said Nvidia has "two glaring holes" for potential acquisition within optical and analog networking. Optical technologies in data centers have a variety of purposes such as supporting network traffic growth, transmitting and receiving optical signals in data centers, and offering cost and power savings while facilitating high-capacity data transmission. Analysts' average price target, per FactSet, suggests potential downside for Lumentum and Coherent given their recent stock run-ups. Jones’ personal social media sites, including his account on the social platform X, which has 2.8 million followers, would not be included. Murray also is expected to sell many of Jones’ personal assets. The Sandy Hook families who won the Connecticut lawsuit want Jones to lose his personal social media accounts. It’s unclear how much money would be raised by selling Infowars and Jones’ assets, and how much money the Sandy Hook families would get. If the debt is found to be valid, that could reduce any amount the Sandy Hook families ultimately get from the liquidations.
