The Bridal Industry Is Having a Swimsuit Moment

Marigo Mihalos Sfaelos brought many outfits to her four-day, event-filled wedding in Karpathos, Greece, last year. There was the silk citrine Greek goddess-style dress, a floral appliqué Estee Couture bridal gown, and a disco ball-inspired floor-length dress for the after party. “I wanted it to be a bridal look that stood out, and the bride should stand out,” said Mrs. Mihalos Sfaelos, 35, a senior director of talent relations at SiriusXM radio in New York. “You can’t just wear a white bathing suit.”Other brides seem to feel the same way, especially with destination weddings, and designers and stylists are paying close attention. Today’s bridal swimwear are not just fashion-forward white bathing suits — they are beaded and bedazzled, fancy and frilly, lacy and Lycra-fitted, and custom made.

Julie Garwood, a romance novelist whose books — some set centuries ago, some sampling present-day maladies like computer hacking and Ponzi schemes — routinely landed on best-seller lists, died on June 8 at her home in Leawood, Kan., on the Missouri border. Her publisher, Berkley, part of the Penguin Group, announced her death in a statement but did not specify a cause. More than 40 million copies of Ms. Garwood’s books are in print in 32 languages, the company said. She was in her 40s when her writing career took off. She was prolific: “Rebellious Desire,” “Honor’s Splendor,” “The Lion’s Lady” and “The Bride” all followed before the end of the 1980s.

The wedding drew students from India, Pakistan, Nepal and other South Asian regions, as well as those who are not South Asian. Mock wedding events have existed in various forms for decades. In Canada, a musical group called Betta Boyz hosted a large mock Nigerian wedding at a Calgary banquet hall in July 2022. Bollywood films, reality television shows like “Indian Matchmaking” and magazine spreads featuring “ultrarich weddings” all contribute to wedding-related fervor. “There is this entire media industry around images of glamorous, luxurious, extravagant, highly indulgent weddings,” she said.

The situation, they said, often plays out like this: Parents arrange to marry their daughter off to a returning Indian. They pay a dowry, a practice long banned in India but still common. The husband flies out, and the wife waits for a visa while living with her in-laws. In a number of cases, men have used dowry money to pay immigration agents to land in wealthy countries like Canada, where Sikhs make up about 2 percent of the population. “The boys come, they enjoy, and leave with the dowry money,” Mr. Garg said.

Some 6.83 million couples married in 2022, according to data released by China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs on Friday. That’s down around 10.5% from the 7.63 million marriage registrations in 2021 and marks a record low since 1986, when the ministry began releasing statistics, according to state media. Chinese officials see a direct link between fewer marriages and falling births in the country, where social norms and government regulations make it challenging for unmarried couples to have children. Efforts from Chinese officials in recent years to reverse trends of falling marriages and births have yet to see results amid the looming economic and social issues at play. The Ministry of Civil Affairs’ recent data release also showed a slight fall in divorce registrations, with 2.1 million couples divorced in 2022, down from 2.13 million couples the previous year.

A New Era of Wedding Dress Shopping

“It is about a wedding wardrobe for them right now.”That was the case for Ms. Moore, the Dallas bride. Although she found her wedding dress only a few months before the main celebration, she had bought multiple bridal outfits since getting engaged in September 2021. First, there was the engagement party dress, then another dress for the bridal shower, then two more for a separate elopement in Las Vegas. “I went into it knowing I wanted to set aside a part of my budget that wasn’t for my wedding dress, but for other looks,” she said. “I feel like for me, it’s just that time in your life when you’re the center of attention, and wedding dress shopping felt so high-pressure,” she added.

He learned how to shoot a gun from his grandfather before he started school, and he fought in three wars as a soldier in the Yugoslav and then the Serbian Army during the Balkan conflicts of the 1990s. Sinisa Janicijevic became such a good shot that he regularly gets invited to weddings in villages around his hometown, Kraljevo, in central Serbia, to make sure the bride shows up — which, by tradition, involves shooting down an apple placed in a tree outside her family’s home. The groom is supposed to perform this task but, anxious about missing, he often calls in a substitute shooter. Serbia’s deep attachment to guns, and the plethora of them, have been widely cited as an explanation for back-to-back massacres last month — one at a school in Belgrade, the capital, and another in nearby farming villages — that stunned the nation, even if the rate of violence involving weapons is low. Following the killings, President Aleksandar Vucic vowed to tighten gun control laws so as to enforce “almost complete disarmament.”

CNN —Bruce Willis’ daughter, Tallulah, has revealed her difficulties coming to terms with her father’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD) diagnosis and shared details about its impact on her family’s life. “I keep flipping between the present and the past when I talk about Bruce: he is, he was, he is, he was. The wedding industry is beginning to see the fallout of this shift away from tradition. That meant "wedding TikTok" — with its dancing groomsmen and videographers turned influencers — was the next best thing. "So it is time for us in the wedding industry to expand the definition of what a perfect day means." Adrienna McDermott spent nine years in the wedding industry before starting a marketing agency for wedding professionals called Ava and the Bee. "It really opened up my eyes for the power of TikTok," Lee said.
Poem: “Bride” by Maggie Smith Source: Simon & SchusterSince then, a huge response to her poetry and prose, including two recent bestsellers, “Keep Moving” and “Goldenrod,” has elevated her to celebrity poet status. CNN: You have said that writing about your divorce has turned you into “a divorce whisperer.” How so? Smith's recent memoir, "You Could Make This Place Beautiful" tackles divorce as well as common family terrain. If someone is going through a breakup, I tell them to remember that they predated, and have outlasted, the relationship. There’s no place I can go here where there isn’t a reminder of something that came before.

Weddings are expensive, and not just for the bride and groom. Wedding gifts alone average $180. "Like just about everything else, inflation and higher interest rates are taking a toll on wedding attendees," said Ted Rossman, Bankrate's senior industry analyst. About 21% of wedding guests feel pressured to spend more than they comfortably are able to, and 18% must lean on credit cards just to attend, Bankrate found. According to a separate survey by LendingTree, 40% of those who attended a wedding in the past five years have taken on debt to cover the cost.

In an interview with CNBC that aired Tuesday, Elon Musk was asked about his tweeting. Musk said he'll say what he wants to say even if it leads to him, Tesla, or Twitter losing money. During an interview with CNBC's David Faber, Musk was asked about why he tweets the way he does. Faber pointed to a tweet from Monday in which Musk said Soros "wants to erode the very fabric of civilization" and "hates humanity." Faber asked why Musk continued to tweet such things and share his political opinions even though Tesla customers and Twitter advertisers may not agree with him.
HONG KONG, May 15 (Reuters) - China will launch pilot projects in more than 20 cities to create a "new-era" marriage and childbearing culture to foster a friendly child bearing environment, the latest move by authorities to boost the country's falling birth rate. Promoting marrying, having children at appropriate ages, encouraging parents to share child-rearing responsibilities, and curbing high "bride prices" and other outdated customs are the focus of the projects, the Times said. The association already launched projects in 20 cities including Beijing last year, the Times said. "The society needs to guide young people more on the concept of marriage and childbirth," demographer He Yafu told the Times. Would You Include Skims in Your Wedding?

Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand Skims has developed a cult following for its everyday basics and intimates and its neutral color palette — so much so that it has inspired a subgenre of “Skims dupes and alternatives.” Customer favorites include a form-fitting maxi lounge dress that drapes down the body. Last week, Skims expanded into bridal with 63 styles of dresses, lingerie, shapewear and loungewear, with some of its best sellers updated in white, baby blue and pink. At first glance, a shapewear brand expanding into bridal may seem random, but it’s a common move for many intimates brands. Savage X Fenty and Victoria’s Secret, two of Skims’s competitors, both have bridal shops. “Everything is white and ivory and lacy, and it’s their time to wear these pieces in those colors,” she said.

When I described the midthigh-length dress I wore a few years ago for my job interview at The Times, the chatbot was not impressed. A 21-year-old woman should wear a statement dress, like a sequined mini, to her birthday party, it said. Was it appropriate to wear a white dress to a wedding as part of the wedding party, something I did a few months ago? It suggested that if I really wanted to wear white, I should check with the bride to see if it would be OK. Which, had I asked this question before the wedding, would have been tricky — there were no brides at this particular wedding, just grooms.

For a Bride With Chronic Illness, a Wedding Cut Short

I didn’t picture us getting married as much as I pictured us being married. In that picture, Alex wasn’t stopping by the pharmacy on his way home from work to pick up my medications. I wasn’t rationing pills depending on my pain level, and he wasn’t holding my hand when I cried over yet another failed intervention. The future I saw was spotless, unmarred by chronic illness — but our union was imminent and I was still sick. My internal monologue in the weeks leading up to our wedding was filled with my fears and, therefore, exhausting.
