WASHINGTON — The White House on Tuesday held a roundtable examining potential harmful data broker practices as part of an overall strategy to protect Americans' privacy. The CFPB's new rule proposals will build upon the FCRA to hold data brokers that sell highly sensitive information more accountable. One proposal, said Chopra, will define a data broker dealing in certain types of consumer data as a consumer reporting agency and the brokers' sale of data as a consumer report. Another will clarify whether credit header data, the portion of a credit report that contains identifying information, can be considered a covered consumer report. "We applaud the steps the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau is taking to stop data brokers from unlawfully collecting and selling millions of Americans' sensitive data," she said.

Stablecoins may be crypto's killer app, but there needs to be regulation in place to allow them to flourish – which could benefit the U.S. dollar, according to Brian Brooks, a partner at Valor Capital Group. "In many countries where you can't get a dollar bank account, stablecoins are your best solution." "If only the U.S. government would create a framework that allows dollars to back stablecoins in a regulated way, that demand would flourish," he continued. This week, payments giant PayPal launched its own dollar-backed stablecoin – a first for a major U.S. financial institution. "Demand for [stablecoin products are] a way for us to make the dollar relevant again at a time when governments around the world are looking to decouple from the dollar," said Brooks.

Dividend stocks have long been a favorite of BMO's since their yields offer protection against heightened market volatility. And to have sufficient dividend growth and yield, companies must have a higher dividend yield than the S&P 500's, and it must be growing at a faster rate than the market's yield. Additional qualifications include having a below-market dividend payout ratio, a free cash flow yield higher than its dividend yield, and no dividend cuts in the prior five years, according to the note. "By focusing solely on high current dividend yield investors could be missing potential recovery and/or dividend growth opportunities." After outlining its barbell strategy and methodology, BMO listed eight stocks in each group that fit those descriptions and are worth considering.

Chief investment strategist Brian Belski said in a July 26 note to clients that "growth at a reasonable price" stocks should be key holdings of the riskier portion of an investment portfolio. The so-called "GARP" stocks tend to have characteristics of both growth and value factors. "We have found through our work that GARP strategies tend to perform much better over longer periods than singularly focused growth or value strategies," Belski wrote. BMO defines "GARP" stocks as those with forward-looking price-to-earnings and price-to-earnings-growth ratios below the median of the S & P 500, while projected earnings growth is greater than the median S & P 500 value. As optimism about the U.S. economy has improved, the gap between earnings growth expectations for GARP companies and the broader market has shrunk.

Conservative groups nationwide have pushed to ban books that discuss L.G.B.T.Q. issues from libraries and schools, saying that parents should be able to control what their children are being taught. The group has promoted a “Hide the Pride” campaign that encourages supporters to check out or move books that depict L.G.B.T.Q. Organizers have described such material as pornographic and obscene and said it should not be available to young library patrons. Both were checked out by the protesters in San Diego.

That effort, if it had been approved, would have killed Carroll's lawsuit because the government can shield itself from civil liability under the doctrine of sovereign immunity. The DOJ had not played a role in that lawsuit, as the alleged actions occurred outside of Trump tenure in the White House. "We are grateful that the Department of Justice has reconsidered its position," Carroll's lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, said in a statement. "Now that one of the last obstacles has been removed, we look forward to trial in E Jean Carroll's original case in January 2024." The letter also said: "Moreover, the circumstantial evidence of Mr. Trump's subjective intent in making theallegedly defamatory statements does not support a determination in this case that he wassufficiently motivated by a desire to serve the United States Government."

The Justice Department is no longer defending Donald Trump in a lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll. But the Justice Department intervened. There is also the fact that the jury found Trump sexually assaulted Carroll well before he ever assumed office. "A jury has now found that Mr. Trump sexually assaulted Ms. Carroll long before he became President," Boynton wrote. While the jury found that Trump sexually abused Carroll by inserting his fingers into her vagina, it didn't find him liable for rape.

July 1 (Reuters) - Botswana and De Beers Group have agreed a new diamond sales deal in which the African country, the world's No. 1 diamond producer by value, gradually increases the share of rough stones it gets from their joint venture Debswana over the next decade to 50%, the government and the mining company said on Saturday. The Botswana government and De Beers said they had agreed on a 10-year sales deal for Debswana's rough diamond production through to 2033, and on a 25-year Debswana mining licence valid until 2054. The Botswana-De Beers agreement allows the partners to advance the investment required to secure Debswana's position as one of the world's leading gem producers, De Beers said. Botswana, where De Beers has been present for 50 years, is heavily reliant on diamonds, with two-thirds of its foreign currency receipts coming from mining, sales and ancillary activities linked to the precious stone.

An interim sales agreement is in place until the new pact is finalised, the two partners said in a statement. "The transformational new agreements between Botswana and De Beers reflect the aspirations of the people of Botswana, propels both Botswana and De Beers forward, and underpins the future of their Debswana joint venture through long-term investment," the statement said. Botswana, the world's second largest diamond producer after Russia by output, supplies 70% of De Beers' rough diamonds. Diamond sales, almost entirely from Debswana, account for two-thirds of Botswana's foreign currency receipts and a fifth of its gross domestic product. Debswana's diamond sales hit a record $4.6 billion last year, compared to $3.5 billion in 2021.

If the S&P 500 can avoid a pullback, it could make a push toward its all-time high. Investors who weren't ready for the remarkable stock market rally of the last three months may not have completely missed out yet, according to several strategists Insider recently spoke with. While some top investing minds think this market rally isn't trustworthy, others are confident that the path of least resistance for US stocks is higher. He believes the S&P 500 is more likely to hit new highs in early 2024 than retest its Fall low of about 3,500. The S&P 500 is trading at roughly 19.2x forward earnings, he said, adding that equal-weighted funds have a forward earning ratio of about 15.5x.
