U.S. one dollar banknotes are seen in front of displayed stock graph in this illustration taken, February 8, 2021. The Australian dollar was 0.23% lower at $0.6474, but remained close to the three-month peak of $0.6523 touched on Monday. "I think the RBA will probably reiterate its tightening bias," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "But I think it's still too early to say the latest easing in the dollar will be sustained. The yen hit 151.74 per dollar last week, edging closer to October 2022 lows that spurred several rounds of dollar-selling intervention.

The dollar was steady on Tuesday, holding overnight gains as investors took a breather from a risk rally, while the Australian currency drifted lower ahead of a central bank interest rates decision later in the day. All eyes in Asian hours will be on the Reserve Bank of Australia, which is widely expected to raise rates by 25 basis points, snapping four months of on hold policy decisions. Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis President Neel Kashkari said on Monday the U.S. central bank likely has more work ahead of it to control inflation. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan (.MIAPJ0000PUS) fell 1.2% following a three-day rally that lifted the benchmark by nearly 6%. South Korean shares (.KS11) fell 3% as traders unwound some of Monday's surge on the reimposition of a short-selling ban. Treasuries were broadly steady in Asia, having unwound a little of last week's rally on Monday. Ten-year yields hovered at 4.92% - about 10 basis points above where they closed on Friday, but below where they were a week earlier. "It was a dovish hike...it's not pointing to any immediate need for a follow-up," said RBC Capital Markets rates strategist Rob Thompson on the phone from Sydney.

The U.S. central bank could even be forced to raise rates to ensure the pace of inflation remains on a downward trajectory and does not bounce back, Goldberg said. Markets also imply about an 80% probability the European Central Bank (ECB) will cut rates by April, while the Bank of England (BoE) is seen easing in August. An outlier is Australia's central bank, which is considered likely to resume raising rates at a policy meeting on Tuesday as inflation there stays stubbornly high. The head of the central bank said on Monday it was closer to achieving its inflation target, but it was still not enough to end ultra-loose policy. The drop in the dollar and yields has helped underpin gold, as investors have cautiously turned back to riskier assets.

The highly anticipated speech moved the 10-year yield lower to nearly 4.90% as another rate hike in 2023 seemingly has become less likely. The option strategy that I will utilize is a credit spread but, better known as a risk reversal. If an investor is long a stock, they could create a short risk reversal to hedge their position by buying a put option and selling a call option. No cost...with a catch This risk reversal is being used as an aggressive bull trade. While there is a lot of time before this option strategy expires, there is an opportunity to manage this spread as it either moves for or against me.

Adjustable-rate mortgages are making a comeback

Meanwhile, the average rate for a kind of adjustable rate mortgage — a 5/1 ARM — dropped to 6.33% from 6.49%. (Freddie Mac, which provides an average that CNN covers weekly, does not track interest rates for adjustable rate mortgages). When Treasury yields go up, so do mortgage rates; when they go down, mortgage rates tend to follow. Fixed rate vs ARMWhile the overwhelming share of loans are still fixed-rate mortgages, ARMs are becoming more attractive in the current higher-rate environment. Generally, homeowners with higher mortgage rates will pay more in interest rather than principal for a longer time than those with lower interest rates.

Oil falls more that $1 a barrel on Venezuela deal hopes

"The reported deal ... would help to raise the country's oil output from very depressed levels," said William Jackson, chief emerging markets economist for Capital Economics. Monday's falling prices appeared to "a breather to take in events in the Middle East" as opposed to expected production increases in Venezuela, said Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates. "Negotiations with Venezuela could lead to a surge in exports of crude oil that is already in inventory," Lipow said. "It's more of the same on Monday in terms of the conflict in the Middle East being contained from affecting crude oil supplies," said John Kilduff, partner with Again Capital LLC. Heightened tensions in the Middle East may have compounded other risk factors to push prices higher last week, market sources said.

REUTERS/Staff/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 5 (Reuters) - European stocks rose on Thursday, after a plunge in oil prices and softer U.S. labour data late on Wednesday helped bring U.S. Treasury yields back down from 16-year highs. European government bond yields were mixed, with the benchmark 10-year German yield up 2 basis points at 2.921% . "The question everyone’s asking is: can yields continue to rise further and at what point are yields going to cause some serious damage on the economy?” said Baylee Wakefield, a portfolio manager at Aviva Investors. REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSYDNEY, Oct 5 (Reuters) - Asian shares rebounded from 11-month lows on Thursday as a plunge in oil prices and softer U.S. labour data helped pull Treasury yields off 16-year peaks, although a looming U.S. payrolls report could make or break the rally. REUTERS/Issei Kato/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 5 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in Asian markets from Jamie McGeever, financial markets columnist. Global currency volatility on Wednesday spiked to its highest since May, a day after U.S. Treasury market volatility also jumped to a five-month high. And although U.S. yields fell across the board, yield curve steepening continued as the 30-year yield pierced 5.00%. Japanese assets, meanwhile, will also be sensitive to possible Bank of Japan activity in the domestic government bond or currency markets on Thursday. An esoteric corner of Japanese markets - yen cross-currency basis - is at levels consistent with previous bouts of volatility.

(Reuters) - U.S. stock index futures advanced on Friday as Treasury yields eased from multi-year highs and powered gains in growth stocks, while investors awaited a crucial inflation metric to assess the outlook for the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File PhotoApple, Microsoft, Tesla, Alphabet, Amazon.com and Nvidia advanced between 0.7% and 1.5% in premarket trading as two-year and 10-year Treasury yields declined. “A move lower in bond yields has given equity markets a much-needed reprieve,” said Tim Waterer, chief market analyst at KCM Trade. With fears of high oil prices fueling inflation, investors are awaiting the U.S. central bank’s preferred inflation metric, the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, which is seen increasing 0.5% in August against a 0.2% gain in July. The core rate, which excludes the volatile food and energy components, is expected to have increased 0.2% in August, similar to July’s reading.

CNN —Central bank officials around the world relayed a somewhat unified message this week to the global economy: Inflation is coming down, but the battle is far from won. Most held rates steady, taking a breather from a historic pace of interest rate hikes to stabilize skyrocketing prices. United States: The Federal Reserve in September paused interest rates for the second time after first hitting the brakes in June. The central bank has hiked rates 11 times since last March. While central banks took steps to pause interest rates this week, they kept future hikes on the table.
