Cabinet secretaries came and went in a Trump administration marked by head-spinning turnover. McMaster and John Kelly, all of whom were generals before they took high-ranking positions in the Trump administration. Another post that would loom large in a Trump administration is that of secretary of homeland security. Advisers to Trump’s transition include his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. Trump’s transition team is assembling small teams of people who would help shepherd nominees through to Senate confirmation.

Opinion | Why Trump Can’t Shake Project 2025

That, after all, is what Project 2025 was actually meant to be. When he said, during his debate with Kamala Harris, that he hadn’t read Project 2025 and has no intention of doing so, I believed him. But Project 2025 — and much else like it that has gotten less press — is more than a compendium of policy proposals: It is an effort to build a deep state of Trump’s own. This is the problem groups like Project 2025 set out to solve. Behind the policy playbook sits a database of around 20,000 applicants ready to be part of the next Trump administration.

We will ultimately eliminate the federal Department of Education,” he said earlier this month during a rally in Wisconsin. Previously, federal education programs were housed in other agencies. Ending the department may not eliminate federal education fundingFederal funding programs for K-12 schools that help support the education of students from low-income families and children with disabilities predated the creation of the Department of Education. Calls to abolish the Department of Education or merge it with another federal agency are not new. When Trump was president, his administration proposed merging the Education and Labor departments into one federal agency.

The Northeast is the ancestral home of footwear manufacturing in the US, where New Balance still assembles more than 4 million pairs of sneakers each year. But that could soon change with a plan for a $125 million development campus called Made in Old Town. At the federal level, the US government has offered billions in subsidies to support manufacturing, mostly targeting the auto, semiconductor, and solar industries. With the Made in Old Town project, the aim is to generate about 6,000 full-time jobs in Portland by as soon as 2028. A long way to goThe Made in Old Town project is still in its early stages, having raised $15 million of its $125 million goal.

And now, the show about a group of Mormon influencers has yet another controversy — this one involving Ben Affleck. Well, Ben Affleck probably shouldn't be involved at all (more on that later). William Preston Affleck was born in 1801 in Scotland and moved to England sometime before 1825, eventually settling in Preston. It's impossible to say definitively that Zac Affleck and Ben Affleck are not very distant cousins. What the public records show, however, is that Zac Affleck and Ben Affleck are not second cousins, or third cousins, or even fourth cousins.

US Marines added a new long-range cruise missile to their arsenal. The AGM-158A joint air-to-surface standoff missile was loaded on an F/A-18 Hornet in late August. The missile can strike targets up to 230 miles, well outside enemy air defenses. AdvertisementThe US Marine Corps has a new long-range weapon in its arsenal, the AGM-158A joint air-to-surface standoff missile (JASSM). The National Hurricane Center calls it Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 and said in forecast updates that the front will weaken as it travels over terrain overnight. Similar volunteer weather stations at other coastal locations, including at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point in Southport, reported more than 14 inches of rain, the weather service said. A National Weather Service forecaster said that it was too soon to say whether the amounts were record breakers but that the weather service office in Wilmington is likely to have that answer late Tuesday morning. A flash flood event was confirmed in the community of Kelly, about 38 miles inland from Wilmington, the weather service said. The disturbance was 45 miles west of Cape Fear and traveling north-northwest at 7 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its latest advisory.

Artificial intelligence is expected to transform the way companies do business, including those in financial planning and investment management. That means financial advisors need to get onboard or risk being left behind. Of course, financial advisors have been using some technology, like financial planning software, for years. Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals sounded unconvinced Monday that the TikTok “sale or ban” law, signed by President Joe Biden in April, was unconstitutional. TikTok and ByteDance have since condemned the practice and said that three employees involved were terminated, with an additional employee resigning. Pincus also said that the data TikTok collects from American users is anonymized and is comparable to other Chinese companies, like major e-commerce platforms. TikTok creators and users in the U.S. have responded overwhelmingly negatively to the proposed ban. Trump then expressed support for TikTok following Biden’s passage of the national security package that included the provision to ban TikTok.

Attorneys for the US government and the widely popular social media app faced off on Monday in a federal appeals court as TikTok fights against a law that could soon see the platform banned in the country. AdvertisementTikTok's lawyer argued the law 'imposes extraordinary speech prohibition'In his oral arguments on Monday, TikTok lawyer Andrew Pincus slammed the law as "unprecedented." “The Secret Service needs more help,” Biden told reporters while leaving the White House on Monday. Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesActing US Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe met with Trump and local law enforcement on Monday in Florida. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle resigned in the fallout from the assassination attempt, leading to Rowe’s appointment as acting director. Those concerns were underscored by details revealed Monday about the suspected shooter’s whereabouts before he was ultimately spotted by Secret Service agents. Moskowitz said Sunday that the Secret Service needed to consider taking more drastic measures, such as shutting down a significantly wider perimeter.

CNN —There’s no political playbook for how to deal with another apparent assassination attempt against a major-party presidential candidate within weeks of an election. The second apparent assassination attempt comes against the backdrop of a turbulent campaign that has defied convention and predictions. Another apparent attempt on his life is likely to have some level of personal impact on the former president. In normal circumstances, an apparent assassination attempt against a presidential candidate might be expected to unleash a surge of sympathy that could translate into a political boost. But it’s too early to say whether the second apparent assassination attempt will have greater political impact than the first.

Nine people were injured as they ran to shelters, after air raid sirens sounded in central Israel Sunday morning. A ballistic missile launched from Yemen crossed into Israel, landing in an open field outside Tel Aviv, the Israel Defense Forces said. The sirens were the first in months, and included Israel's Ben Gurion international airport in Tel Aviv, where local media showed footage of people racing to shelters. Responders put out a fire in the area of Lod, near Tel Aviv, in central Israel. Abortion rights opponents had argued in a pair of lawsuits that the amendment to expand abortion rights violated a state rule that says a ballot proposal must only address one subject. Matt Heffron, a senior counsel for a firm that argued against allowing the abortion rights initiative to stay on the ballot, slammed the high court's ruling. Colorado, New York and Maryland are the liberal-leaning states with abortion ballot measures. Arizona and Nevada — two key battleground states in the presidential election — also have abortion ballot initiatives. That same year, Kansas voters cast ballots against a proposed amendment which would have removed language guaranteeing abortion rights in the state.

Chinese regulators on Friday hit PwC's auditing unit in mainland China with a six-month business suspension and a record fine of 441 million yuan ($62 million) over the firm's audit of troubled property developer China Evergrande Group . "PwC has seriously eroded the basis of law and good faith, and damaged investors' interest," said the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) in a statement. PwC Zhong Tian, the registered accounting entity and the main onshore arm of PwC in China, was the country's top-earning auditor in 2022, according to the latest official data. "The cost is enormous in reputation, affecting the ability to get new business in China beyond the fine. PwC also deliberately excluded properties that Evergrande marked as "not allowed to visit" from audit samples, it added.
