In the suit, Ziada sought unspecified damages against Gantz under Dutch universal jurisdiction rules, which allows countries to prosecute serious offences committed elsewhere. Sixty-seven Israeli soldiers and six civilians in Israel also died, according to Israeli military and health officials. Mourners carry the body of Palestinian who was killed during clashes with Israeli settlers, in a hospital in Ramallah, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank August 4, 2023. Israeli police detained two settlers in Friday's incident near Burqa village. Amid increased attacks on their communities by Palestinians armed with guns, rocks or firebombs, settlers have repeatedly rampaged in West Bank villages, causing extensive property damage. The State Department statement on Burqa was issued back-to-back with a statement condemning as terrorism a Palestinian gun attack that killed a security officer in Tel Aviv. The West Bank is among areas where Palestinians seek statehood.

Opinion: Don’t expect history to be kind to Netanyahu

CNN —There is no question that history books will dedicate considerable space to the impact that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had on the fate of his embattled nation. But in Israel’s parliamentary system, the prime minister controls not just the executive but also the legislature through his majority coalition in parliament. Without judiciary oversight, the prime minister and his bloc have little to stop them as they push their agenda. Frida GhitisTo become prime minister, Netanyahu had to enlist the support of enough parties to have 61 votes out of the 120 seats in the Knesset. When asked whom they would prefer as prime minister, just 34% said Netanyahu over the center-right Benny Gantz, with opposition leader Yair Lapid also beating the Israeli leader.

But for many Israelis, the two camps - one rising, the other on its way down - are more polarised than ever. For them, Monday's planned ratification of a curb on Supreme Court powers is a symptom, rather than a cause, of the rifts. Those favouring the legislation are largely religious-nationalists who, by mobilising their growing numbers, helped Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu return to office in December. Blindsided by the pace and scale of the reforms, some protesters have vowed to withhold taxes and stop reporting for military reserve duty. Many pro-government Israelis view the seven months of nationwide demonstrations as an attempt to undermine their ballot victory.

JERUSALEM, July 4 (Reuters) - Israeli lawmakers on Tuesday gave an initial nod to a bill that limits Supreme Court power to rule against the government after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced he would press on with contentious changes to the justice system. In a stormy session broadcast live, Parliament's constitution committee, dominated by Netanyahu's nationalist-religious ruling coalition, voted in favour of the bill that limits "reasonableness" as a standard of judicial review. At present, the Supreme Court can rule against government and elected officials' decisions if they are deemed unreasonable. After the committee vote, the shekel weakened by 0.3% against the dollar. Netanyahu has defended the changes as restoring balance between branches of government and redressing what his coalition allies see as judicial overreach.

JERUSALEM, May 1 (Reuters) - Israeli parties have made no progress towards a compromise over the government's bitterly disputed judicial overhaul package after a month of meetings, Benny Gantz, head of the largest opposition party, said on Monday. The government says the overhaul is needed to rein in activist judges and restore balance between parliament and the courts. However, Gantz, defence minister in the previous government, said the talks were "not really progressing on any of the issues". Opponents say the proposals would remove vital checks and balances and give Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's nationalist-religious coalition free rein, threatening minority rights and undermining Israel's democratic foundations. An Israeli Channel 13 poll on Sunday showed that only 8% of Israelis want the judicial overhaul to be the government's top priority.
JERUSALEM, March 6 (Reuters) - Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday said a compromise in the government's judicial overhaul plan could be imminent even as protests against the reform continued to spread. In a statement late on Monday, Netanyahu criticised the threats to refuse military service, which he said endangered Israel's existence. "There is room for protest, there is room for disagreements, for expressing opinions, but there is no room for refusal." Herzog last month floated a compromise plan to spare the country what he described as a "constitutional collapse". The judicial overhaul plan, which has already received initial parliamentary approval, would give the government greater sway on selecting judges and limit the power of the Supreme Court to strike down legislation.
[1/6] Israelis protest against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's new right-wing coalition and its proposed judicial reforms to reduce powers of the Supreme Court in a main square in Tel Aviv, Israel January 14, 2023. Among those opposed are the Supreme Court chief justice and the country's attorney-general. Channel 13 TV last week found 53% of Israelis were opposed to changing the court appointments' structure while 35% were in support. Critics of the Supreme Court say it is overreaching and unrepresentative of the electorate. "We promised the people change, we promised governance, we promised reforms - and we will make good on that."
JERUSALEM, Jan 1 (Reuters) - Bezalel Smotrich took over as Israel's finance minister on Sunday, pledging fiscal responsibility and a boost to competition while working to tackle high living costs at a time of elevated inflation and slowing global economic growth. "Israel will be an island of stability and responsibility," the 42-year old Smotrich, head of the far-right pro-settler Religious Zionism party, told Reuters after the ceremony at the finance ministry. He added that Israel would take all necessary steps to support economic stability and be the "safest place" to invest. Incoming economy minister Nir Barkat said he intends to ease the "unbearable load" on businesses in Israel, declaring a "war on regulation", which he called "a cancer on the economy". New tourism minister Haim Katz promised to promote tourism in the occupied West Bank.
JERUSALEM, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Israel could attack Iranian nuclear sites in two or three years, its defence minister said on Wednesday, in unusually explicit comments about a possible timeline. Experts say Iran could potentially raise the fissile purity of its uranium to weapons-grade in short order. But building a deliverable warhead would take it years, they say - an estimate echoed by an Israeli military intelligence general this month. "In two or three years, you may be traversing the skies eastward and taking part in an attack on nuclear sites in Iran," Defence Minister Benny Gantz told graduating air force cadets in a speech. Unlike Iran, Israel is not a signatory to the voluntary Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1970, which offers access to civilian nuclear technologies in exchange for the forswearing of nuclear weaponry.
“The murder of the child Jana Majdi Zakarneh adds to the horrific murders of children that the occupation soldiers continue to commit,” Shtayyeh said. Israel has also recorded the highest number deaths from Palestinian attacks this year in nearly 20 years, with 31 killed. According to the IDF, the suspects threw explosives and fired at the IDF soldiers, who responded with “live fire.” No IDF injuries were reported. On Thursday, a 16-year-old boy died after he was shot by Israeli forces in Ramallah, according to a separate statement by the Palestinian Ministry of Health last week. The IDF said in a statement that Israeli soldiers “shot toward suspects” for throwing rocks and paint bottles at vehicles “endangered the lives of passersby” near the town of Aboud in Ramallah.
Israeli security forces were deployed during the riot in the West Bank city of Hebron on Saturday. TEL AVIV—A riot by Jewish pilgrims in the West Bank city of Hebron over the weekend drew widespread condemnation with Palestinian leaders warning that the incoming right-wing Israeli government could cause further instability in the West Bank. Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides called the riot abhorrent and called for a rapid de-escalation of the situation. Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid called the events, in which one Israeli soldier was injured, a “national disgrace.” Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz condemned the attacks on Palestinians and Israeli forces, and said those responsible would be held accountable. Incoming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued no statement about the violence in Hebron and his spokesman didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Abu Akleh’s supporters accuse Israel of intentionally killing the 51-year-old and have urged Washington to open a full investigation. Gantz, who is set to leave his post following elections earlier this month that vaulted Israel’s former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu back to power, was defense minister when Abu Akleh was killed. In September, Israel acknowledged for the first time that Israeli fire probably killed Abu Akleh. Human rights groups have long accused the Israeli military of failing to properly investigate wrongdoing by its own troops and seldom holding forces accountable. Abu Akleh was shot while reporting on an Israeli military raid in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, long a flashpoint in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
JERUSALEM, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Israel will not cooperate with any external investigation into the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, Defence Minister Benny Gantz said on Monday. "The U.S. Justice Ministry's decision to investigate the unfortunate death of Shireen Abu Akleh is a serious mistake," Gantz said in a statement. The circumstances of Abu Akleh's killing remain heavily disputed. Other witness accounts of the incident have disputed that Israeli positions were under fire from the area where Abu Akleh was standing when she was killed. "We continue to pursue all possible avenues for accountability and we have hope that some day we will see justice for Shireen."
Herzog began consultations with political parties on Wednesday, meeting representatives from Netanyahu's Likud party, to be followed by meetings with other party representatives over the coming days. He said he expected to complete the talks on Friday and assign the task of forming a government on Sunday. Last week's election saw Netanyahu end a stalemate after five elections in less than four years. "There is a clear mandate from most of the public to form a right-wing government," he said. Earlier on Wednesday, Herzog issued a statement dismissing local reports that he was pushing for a unity government with outgoing centrist premier Yair Lapid and National Unity party leader Benny Gantz.
Timeline: Israel's election cycle

The country has been caught in an election cycle since 2019, amid persistent deadlock between former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his rivals on the left, right and centre. December 2018 - Netanyahu, veteran leader of the right-wing Likud Party, seemed to be at the peak of his powers, about to become Israel's longest-serving prime minister. April 9, 2019 - Election day, after which Netanyahu - under criminal investigation for corruption - struggles for weeks to put together a coalition and fails. Rather than wait for the opposition to vote them out, the government moves to dissolve parliament, triggering Israel's fifth election since 2019. Whoever is picked, long coalition talks will likely ensue, either delivering a government - or a sixth election.

Facing a protracted war in Ukraine and a wall of Western sanctions, Russia is turning to Iran to bolster its military and keep its economy afloat, as both countries’ interests converge. The delivery is part of Russia's plans to import “hundreds” of drones from Iran, they said. Despite Moscow’s alignment with Iran, Russia so far has maintained friendly relations with Tehran’s adversaries in the Middle East, including Israel, which has enjoyed a pragmatic relationship with Russia. Russia’s increasing cooperation with Iran could also complicate diplomacy outside the Ukraine conflict, including efforts to revive the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. “Iran can try to help Russia evade sanctions without the JCPOA or with the JCPOA.
