The app, ESPN Bet, made early strides in the first few months, gaining ground through promotions and marketing that leveraged ESPN's popular personalities. Even Fanatics, the industry's other major recent disrupter, hasn't made much of a dent in DraftKings' and FanDuel's dominance. As of March, ESPN Bet had captured about 4% of the online-sports-betting market by gross gaming revenue, per Bank of America's analysis, though its share has been higher in states like Pennsylvania. The U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, on Tuesday declared gun violence in America a public health crisis, recommending an array of preventive measures that he compared to past campaigns against smoking and traffic safety. The step follows years of calls by health officials to view firearm deaths through the lens of health rather than politics. The National Rifle Association has vigorously opposed this framing and promoted legislation that effectively quashed federal funding for research into gun violence for a quarter-century. also unsuccessfully lobbied against Dr. Murthy’s nomination as surgeon general by Barack Obama in 2014, calling him “a serious threat to the rights of gun owners.”Dr. Murthy’s 32-page advisory calls for an increase in funding for firearm violence prevention research; advises health workers to discuss firearm storage with patients during routine medical visits; and recommends safe storage laws, universal background checks, “red flag” laws and an assault weapons ban, among other measures.

The same could not be said for their sprawling entertainment businesses. The three men meet occasionally to discuss the state of the industry, and lively disagreements have a been a staple of their discussions. But by the time they met on the yacht, they had all agreed that the money-losing status quo in the streaming business was unsustainable. “There was peace in the valley for a period of time,” Mr. Malone mused in a rare recent interview, recalling the days before video-streaming upended the lucrative cable business. Silvano Marchetto, an Italian-born restaurateur whose Greenwich Village trattoria, Da Silvano, became a star-studded canteen and a Page Six fixture over four decades, died on June 4 in Florence, Italy. Akin to a downtown Elaine’s, Da Silvano, which opened in 1975, was one of New York’s reigning haunts for the art, fashion, media and film crowds. And Mr. Marchetto, a hard-living Tuscan who parked his Ferrari ornamentally outside his establishment, was its rustic host and mascot. He wore Hawaiian shirts and yellow pants, and his wrists were covered in silver bracelets and jewelry. Before social media democratized the public’s access to the lives of celebrities, tabloids like The New York Post and The Daily News relied on Da Silvano as a source of juicy gossip.

I talked to Samuel Freedman, a Columbia Journalism School professor, about his recent book about Humphrey and the 1948 Democratic convention in Philadelphia. The book’s title, “Into the Bright Sunshine,” is taken from a line in Humphrey’s rousing speech on civil rights. In 1968, the Democratic Party was operating under old rules in which primary voters actually had relatively little direct effect on delegates. When Strom Thurmond and the Dixiecrats bolted from the Democratic Party in 1948, that’s the beginning of the vast majority of the White South becoming Republicans, stepping away from the Democratic Party. Bitcoin's recent weakness could be signaling an upcoming correction in stocks, according to Stifel's chief equity analyst Barry Bannister. On Thursday, the S & P 500 briefly touched 5,500 for the first time after notching its most recent record close earlier in the week. "Weakening bitcoin … signals an imminent S & P 500 summer correction and consolidation phase," he said. "With the S & P 500 now at the very high end (2 sigma) of bitcoin post-peak cycle overlays since 2011, we have yet another strong signal that an imminent S & P 500 correction is possible." "Past bubbles since the 19th century indicate the S & P 500 could well rise to ~6,000 at year-end 2024 and then round trip to near where 2024 began five quarters later, by ~1Q26 (S & P 500 ~4,800)."

Researchers Say Social Media Warning Is Too Broad
  + stars: | 2024-06-19 | by ( Ellen Barry | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When the U.S. surgeon general, Dr. Vivek Murthy, announced on Monday that he was planning to push for a mental health warning label on social media platforms, he was met with cheers from many parents and teachers, who described a long, lonely struggle to wrench children away from a habit that was hurting them. He got a cooler reaction, however, from some scientists who study the relationship between social media and mental health. In interviews, several researchers said the blanket warning Dr. Murthy has proposed — “social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents” — stretches and oversimplifies the scientific evidence. For many years, researchers have tried to determine whether the amount of time a child spent on social media contributed to poor mental health, and “the results have been really mixed, with probably the consensus being that no, it’s not related,” said Dr. Mitch Prinstein, the chief science officer at the American Psychological Association. What seems to matter more, he said, is what they are doing when they are online — content about self-harm, for example, has been shown to increase self-harming behavior.
