Read previewChina's baby bust could see its urban pet population outnumbering the number of toddlers by 2030, investment bank Goldman Sachs wrote in a July 28 report. According to Goldman Sachs' forecasts, China will have more than 70 million urban pets by 2030. AdvertisementThe rise in pet ownership, the bank said, could help push China's pet food market to $12 billion by 2030. People having more pets than babies shouldn't be surprising considering how China is presently grappling with a demographic crisis. China's population shrank again in 2023, with the number of deaths exceeding the number of births by 2.08 million people.

Less discussed, however, is a parallel crisis in corporate America: a wave of aging business leaders who refuse to step aside. The average retirement age is similarly increasing: to 62 in 2024 from 57 in 1991. Using public data from 1992 to 2018, they assessed the relationship between a CEO's age and their "managerial ability," as measured by how they turned company resources into revenue and profit. "A 10% increase in CEO age is associated with a 1.9% decrease in managerial ability," they wrote. And older workers, both above and below the traditional retirement age, already face unwarranted discrimination in the workplace.

Read previewA closely watched recession indicator flashed on Friday after a weak July jobs report showed an unexpected surge in the unemployment rate. The Sahm Rule, created by former Federal Reserve official Claudia Sahm, triggers when the unemployment rate's three-month moving average moves 50 basis points above its 12-month low. That rule was triggered on Friday, with the moving average rising 53 basis points above that one-year trough, according to the real-time Sahm Rule Recession Indicator from the St. Louis Federal Reserve. The only misfire for the rule was in 1959, but even then, a recession started just five months after the Sahm Rule flashed. But Sahm herself wrote in a Substack post last week that "the rise in the unemployment rate is not as ominous as it would normally seem."

U.S. airlines are reducing their capacity through the end of the year in a bid to cool an oversupplied domestic market that has led to lower fares and reduced profits despite strong summer travel demand. Airlines now expect to grow flying about 4% year over year during the final three months of the year. U.S. airline executives have noted strong demand but a U.S. domestic market that's awash in flights, forcing them to dial back growth plans, which could drive up fares. Reducing capacity could drive up fares for consumers and boost airlines' bottom lines, if travel demand holds up. Getting fares in the market that are profitable to airlines but palatable to consumers is crucial for the industry as consumers have pulled back on spending in other areas.
