I love my online bank account, but an in-person account was the best way to get European cash. But it has been the perfect fit for me, and I will sing most online banks' praises to anyone who will listen. So imagine my surprise when my husband convinced me to open a Chase checking account (while still keeping our online bank accounts). Our online bank doesn't exchange foreign currency. AdvertisementSo we transferred $500 from our online checking account to Chase, and the $300 was deposited into our account within 15 business days.

I tend to overspend during the holidays, so I asked a financial planner about spending strategies. AdvertisementEvery year, when November arrives, I start to get stressed out about holiday spending. As I took a closer look at my finances, I realized that it wouldn't make sense to drain my savings account for holiday spending and wondered about other payment strategies to use instead. FOMO makes deals seem overly importantOne of the biggest reasons I often blow through my holiday spending budget is because the deals this time of year seem so great. AdvertisementShe even suggests being transparent with people in your life about your holiday spending and savings.

You shouldn't expect high-yield savings account interest rates to drop anytime soon. High-yield savings accounts are a great choiceDespite the fact that APYs will likely fall eventually, high-yield savings accounts can still be a really good place to put your money. "By its nature a high-yield savings account will still provide more interest than an ordinary savings account at a major bank," Herzog says. In fact, now may be the time to take advantage and put funds into a high-yield savings account if you haven't already. "If we see more talk of interest rates slowly declining, I think there will be more interest in longer-term securities or options to lock in those interest rates," Valega says.

However, variable-rate CDs and no-penalty CDs offer flexibility that may be worth considering. So far this year, CD rates have been increasing and I've managed to secure CDs with rates that range from 4.75% to 5.5% APY. "CD interest rates are for a 12-month period." Variable-rate CDBecause I've been mostly risk-averse with my CDs, one type that I've never tried are variable-rate CDs. For example, if you get a one-year CD paying 5% with the option to bump up, Manske said you can pay attention to CD rates and elect to update it if the rates rise.

I started working when I was in junior high, and I've always been glad to be able to earn money. I have chronic paranoid schizophrenia, and I haven't been able to work full-time since a 2006 episode. I've adapted as much as I can, but the limitations on when and how I can earn money are demoralizing. I've worked a variety of odd jobs since junior high. The hard truth is that I would have to seek housing with a family member without my husband's income.

If you want to retire early, start early and look at your expenses, your income, and your assets. But I didn't pay much attention to the second half of the book, which lays out a plan to retire early. Recently, I've been thinking about what early retirement might look like. Real estate and other assets are possible sources of income to fund an early retirement. High-yield savings accounts have seen huge APYs in recent times, but those rates may not last forever. Earn top savings rates and manage it all with a single secure login. But when should you ease up on your savings accounts and consider investing your money instead? That can make investing much more attractive than a savings account — even in a high-yield savings account — if you have a longer time horizon. Alternatives to HYSAsYou don't have to decide between a savings account and investing in a retirement savings account — like a 401(k) or an IRA — or a taxable brokerage.

Access to abortion medication is available via telehealth. For those who need out-of-state care, however, the cost of abortion may be as high as $30,000. While costs have increased in places with bans, states like California and New York allow telehealth appointments for medication abortion, reducing travel time and the cost of abortion care. "What would have been a cost of $5,000 turned into $10,000 just for abortion care because it had to be in a hospital," she says. In April 2023, the Supreme Court maintained access to mifepristone, but additional cases could be brought to the Supreme Court in future terms.

Single women face unique challenges when planning for retirement, so I asked an expert for help. Plus, women are often put in a caregiving role, which means time off from work — and not contributing regularly to retirement funds. So how can single women like me juggle with inflation, a higher cost of living, dwindling income, and the gender wage gap to be on track for retirement? I asked Marie Thomasson, a certified financial planner and founder of Modern Assets, an LA-based financial advisory firm for independent, progressive women, for tips on how single women can steer the course and make sure they're on track with their goals for retirement planning. Reassess your retirement accountsOnce you have your financial bases covered, you can venture into investing and retirement planning, says Thomasson.

I've used several banks over the years, and I recently looked into switching to online banking. I've moved most of my investments to an online account so I don't focus on it every day. I inherited my first bank from my mother — the largest of Canada's Big Five banks, Royal Bank of Canada. When I lived in Switzerland, my husband and I had a shared bank account with United Bank of Switzerland. When I had all of my investments with BMO, it meant that I would see what my long-term investments were doing anytime I logged into my online banking.

I have a 401(k) from an old job, so I asked a financial planner what to do with the funds. Unsure of what to do with the money inside that old 401(k), I chatted with certified financial planner Faron Daugs for advice. Roll your old 401(k) into your current employer's planWhile this option doesn't apply to me because I'm self-employed, one route that Daugs suggested is rolling your old 401(k) plan into the 401(k) plan offered by your current employer. A Roth 401(k) is similar to a Roth IRA and a 401(k), where you make post-tax contributions and earnings inside the account grow tax-free. Daugs also said going this route means you won't get taxed on any distributions from your old 401(k) plan.

I asked money experts for tips on how to get the most out of selling stocks by the end of the year. I'm going to use tax-loss harvesting to maximize the benefit I get from selling stocks. One pain point I'm addressing is that I have lost so much money in the stock market this year, and I just want out. With his recommendation, I sat down and reviewed each individual stock, looked into the company's earning reports, and researched news about emerging trends in that industry. However, Han shared a caveat that's important to know if you're someone who plans to keep on buying and selling stocks.

With lifespans longer and families more spread out, it's essential that I think about long-term care. Long-term care insurance comes in many forms at many costs. The days of an unmarried woman taking care of elderly relatives are a thing of the past, which is why long-term care insurance products are more popular. Long-term care insurance goes beyond the standard health care insurance policy. A long-term care insurance policy protects against the risk of having to pay out of pocket for in-home and/or out-of-home care services.
