Read previewWe're getting closer to a cure for range anxiety, so why don't more people want an EV? This dip in demand is reflected in a stagnation in EV sales growth over the past year as companies adjust to a new crop of more practical green-car shoppers. Battery-powered cars accounted for a record 7.6% of all car sales in 2023, according to Kelley Blue Book, up from 5.9% in 2022. Affordability is also a key issue for today's electric car shoppers, an issue the industry has tried to address with lower sticker prices. But EV shoppers have found a new cost to angst over.

German automotive giant Volkswagen on Tuesday said it was scrapping six labor agreements as the company's standoff with unions and its works council intensified. "The company sees itself forced to do so because of the current economic challenges," Volkswagen said in a statement translated by CNBC. That applies to the company as well as the wage agreement levels," Volkswagen human resources chief Gunnar Kilian said in the statement. In a statement released Tuesday, VW Works Council head Daniela Cavallo reiterated that there would be pushback to Volkswagen's plans. BMW trimmed its profitability guidance for 2024 on Tuesday, pointing to technical problems that led to delivery stops for cars as well as persistently sluggish demand in the key Chinese market. The German carmaker said it expects its margin of earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to be between 6% and 7% for 2024, having previously guided for a figure between 8% and 10%. In a statement, Continental said that only a "small proportion" of the braking systems it produces and supplies to BMW will be partially replaced because of an electronic component that may be impaired. The company also forecasts a slight decrease in deliveries, it said, without providing a specific figure, after having previously expected an increase. The technical actions related to the integrated braking systems impact over 1.5 million vehicles and will result in additional warranty costs in a high three-digit million amount in the third quarter, the company added.

The Swedish automaker said it now aims for between 90% and 100% of its car sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. "I think a lot of manufacturers are obviously going through this process [of delaying electrification targets] at the moment. The U.K., for instance, introduced a mandate that requires 22% of new car sales this year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The mandate, which aims to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on the road, will rise annually until it reaches 100% of new car sales by 2035. London CNN —Foreign automakers have dominated China’s car market for decades, selling millions of vehicles and raking in enormous profits. Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are also among firms seeing sales and market share vanish in China as local consumers spurn overseas brands to buy Chinese instead. The American automaker’s sales in China have halved from a peak of above 4 million in 2017 to 2.1 million last year. Last year, BYD sold a record 3.02 million vehicles globally, including plug-in hybrids, up 62% from 2022. Months later, Stellantis (STLA), which makes Citroen, Fiat, and Peugeot cars, bought a 20% stake in Chinese EV maker Leapmotor for about €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion).

This has helped cut the average price paid in July for a new EV to $58,619, which is 1% lower year-over-year, according to Edmunds. That's actually $4,366 cheaper than the average price paid in July for a new plug-in hybrid. Demand for hybrids is growing among a more practical group of green car shoppers who aren't ready to make the switch to a fully electric car. The average price paid for an EV still outpaces the average price paid for any new car by about $10,000. Car companies are leaning into this loophole with attractive EV leasing deals.

New York CNN —Billionaire investor Carl Icahn and his firm Icahn Enterprises have settled charges for failing to disclose pledges of the company’s securities as collateral for billions of dollars in personal loans, US regulators said Monday. The investigation came after a report from short-seller Hindenburg Research sent shares in Icahn’s investment firm spiraling last year. Hindenburg wrote that “Icahn has been using money taken in from new investors to pay out dividends to old investors. The Securities and Exchange Commission said Icahn, who partially inspired Wall Street villain Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film “Wall Street,” pledged up to 82% of shares in his companies to secure billions of dollars of margin loans — but failed to disclose those details. “Hindenburg’s modus operandi, which is to publish scurrilous and unsupported allegations, did damage to IEP and its investors,” Icahn said Monday.

Rising U.S.-China tensions have sent Chinese companies the signal that regardless of who wins the White House, overseas investment is the way to go. Chinese companies' interest in expanding overseas has accelerated since the pandemic as growth slowed domestically. "Top sectors that received Chinese investment have shifted from tertiary to manufacturing industries," the report said. "Interestingly, while Chinese companies have become more active in expanding business in ASEAN countries, they tend to maintain their presence in the West, suggesting the 'ASEAN+1' strategy may have increased." Even in the U.S, where new investment from China has fallen sharply, the report said that "Chinese companies have not materially withdrawn from the US market either."
