BEIJING — Police in northeastern China said that seven people have been arrested following a clash between residents and authorities enforcing Covid-19 quarantine restrictions. The violence comes as China reports new cases nationwide, with 2,230 cases reported Tuesday in the southern manufacturing and technology hub of Guangzhou. While the numbers remain relatively low, China has relentlessly pursued its strict “zero-Covid” policy of quarantines, lockdowns and daily or near-daily compulsory testing. News of the arrests appeared on social media Tuesday morning, but was erased by the country’s censors before noon. Those include the former party leader of Shanghai, where a draconian two-month lockdown earlier this year led to food shortages, confrontations with authorities and severe disruptions to global supply chains that have grown dependent on Chinese manufacturing and shipping.
Authorities are making changes such as more precisely targeting lockdowns, rolling out new vaccines and adding international flights. Daily infections, though extremely low by international standards, are hitting six-month highs, while officials repeatedly reaffirm the zero-COVID policy that President Xi Jinping argues saves lives. Still, Huang does not expect fundamental change in China's COVID policy anytime soon. "COVID is not scary, it is preventable and treatable," the city's health authority told residents. China recently began rolling out what is believed to be the world's first inhalable COVID vaccine, which could help in reducing vaccine hesitancy that is especially widespread among older Chinese.
Apple 's newest iPhones, the series 14 models, come with better displays, cameras, and satellite messaging, among other features and updates. For example, the base iPhone 14 model starts at $799 in the U.S., the same price that the company charged for the iPhone 13 at its release last year. In the U.K., the base iPhone 14 costs £849, or roughly $975. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max in the U.K. is £150 more expensive than the equivalent last year's model. The reason Apple took the step to increase the price of phones in those markets has to do with currency fluctuations.
According to the letters from Twitter, shared by the California Employment Development Department, Twitter notified affected employees on Nov. 4. This kind of arrangement may serve as "payment in lieu of notice," in California depending on specific terms of employment. At the company's satellite locations in Santa Monica, Twitter cut approximately 93 employees including 17 mid-level officials and managers, 66 professionals and 10 combined sales and administrative support workers, the WARN notice showed. At a San Jose office, Twitter cut approximately 106 employees, including one executive or senior-level official or manager, 18 mid-level officials and managers, 85 professionals and two administrative support workers, according to the WARN notice. Shannon Liss-Riordan, a worker's rights attorney representing the terminated Twitter employees, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Nov 2 (Reuters) - A Chinese industral park that hosts an iPhone factory belonging to Foxconn (2317.TW) announced a fresh COVID-19 lockdown on Wednesday, raising questions about its impact on the Apple (AAPL.O) supplier's efforts to quell discontent at the factory. Oil prices inched lower on Tuesday, extending losses of 1% from the previous session as more extensive Covid-19 curbs in China increased fears of slowing fuel demand in the world's second-largest oil consumer. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell 18 cents, or 0.2%, to $86.35 a barrel. "With China sticking to the zero-Covid policy, the oil demand outlook overshadowed a record of U.S. oil export data from last week," CMC Markets analyst Tina Teng said. Also weighing on sentiment was the world's largest independent oil trader Vitol saying that its sees signs of oil demand destruction, ANZ Research analysts said in a note. OPEC raised its forecasts for world oil demand in the medium-and longer-term on Monday, saying that $12.1 trillion of investment is needed to meet this demand despite the transition to renewable energy sources.
After Elon Musk closed his $44 billion purchase of Twitter last week, employees at the company braced for job cuts. Some told CNBC they were worried about losing their equity compensation if Musk sent them packing before their shares vested the first week of November. Musk and Tesla have been sued repeatedly over employees' claims that they were fired just before their shares vested, depriving them of compensation. However, it appears that the current tranche of stock-based compensation for many Twitter employees, who were there before Musk took over, will get paid out after all. The former Tesla employees won, but the electric vehicle maker was able to overturn the decision later on appeal.

At Twitter, Musk is counting on his lieutenants and loyalists to decide who and what to cut or keep at the social network. It is not immediately clear how Tesla employees are expected to split their schedules between the automaker and Twitter. Typically, when Tesla employees work for other Elon Musk ventures, usually SpaceX or the Boring Company, they can get paid by the other venture as a consultant. Employees say Musk wants that work done by the first week of November.

With federal regulators set to tighten Trump-era labor standards that let Uber and Lyft, as well as food-delivery services like Doordash, treat gig workers as independent contractors with few protections under labor law, shares dropped sharply last week. But while a shift, the Department of Labor proposal doesn't immediately transform gig workers into employees entitled to overtime pay, unemployment insurance and other benefits. "It seems like the start of a Game of Thrones battle between the Department of Labor and the gig economy,' Wedbush analyst Dan Ives said. Uber believes the Department of Labor is focused less on ridesharing and more on industries such as construction that also use gig workers, pointing out that the proposed rule doesn't single out rideshare drivers. Uber drivers also supply their own cars and gasoline, though the company in March added a per-trip fuel surcharge that goes directly to drivers.
