Euro zone inflation is moving in the right direction, Portugal's central bank governor Mario Centeno said Tuesday, despite his peers on the European Central Bank Governing Council striking a more hawkish tone in recent days. "We target medium term inflation, we don't target February inflation, and the trajectory is very positive right now," Centeno told CNBC at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "I don't say that overshooting is a possibility, but we don't need to do more than is needed to bring inflation in the medium term to 2%. Since the end of 2022, all our forecasts to 2025 show a very well-anchored forecast for inflation in the medium term." Services inflation is falling faster than it went up and is on a particularly positive course, according to Centeno.

The European Central Bank may defy market expectations and hold off on starting interest rate cuts during the whole of 2024, the institution's Governing Council member Robert Holzmann said Monday. Asked about those who call for the first rate cut to take place as soon as April, Austria's central bank governor told CNBC, "I'm afraid, leaving Davos, those people will be deeply disappointed." Speaking to CNBC's Steve Sedgwick at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he added, "I cannot imagine that we'll talk about cuts yet, because we should not talk about it. "Unless we see a clear decline towards 2%, we won't be able to make any announcement at all when we're going to cut," Holzmann said. "Because the driver can deduct his mileage from his side gig income and make below the earnings limit, his Social Security income will not be reduced," she said. "Many retirees often begin working side gigs, do freelance work, or receive other retirement income without knowing how other streams of income can impact how their Social Security income is taxed," she said.

The final poll from Iowa’s premier pollster, Ann Selzer, has Trump at 48% followed by former South Carolina Gov. If the final outcome Monday night mirrors the poll, Trump will have won the highest Iowa GOP caucus vote share for a non-incumbent ever. A Haley win in the first primary race in the nation would indicate that Trump is not invincible. He did more than 5 points better than where his final Iowa poll had him. The consumer price index, a closely watched inflation gauge, increased 0.1% in November, and was up 3.1% from a year ago, the Labor Department reported Tuesday . Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for no gain and a yearly rate of 3.1%. Food prices increased 0.2%, boosted by a 0.4% jump in food away from home. On an annual basis, food rose 2.9% while energy was down 5.4%.

"Overall, the jobs market is doing its part to get us to a soft landing," said Daniel Zhao, lead economist at jobs rating site Glassdoor. The unemployment rate unexpectedly declined to 3.7%, easing worries that it could trigger a historically dead-on signal known as the Sahm Rule, which coordinates increases of the unemployment rate by half a percentage point to recessions. "The recession versus soft landing debate sort of misses the necessary nuances of this unique cycle," Sonders said. "A best-case scenario is not so much a soft landing, because that ship has already sailed for [some] segments.

Driver, who played Italian fashion scion Maurizio Gucci in "House of Gucci", takes on the lead role, with Spanish actress Penelope Cruz playing Ferrari's wife, Laura. "So the pressure ... was on to kind of get it right." The film's cast also includes U.S. actress Shailene Woodley as Lina Lardi, Ferrari's mistress and the mother of his surviving son, Piero, and U.S. actor Patrick Dempsey, who portrays Italian racing driver Piero Taruffi.

"Monetary policy is in a good place for policymakers to assess incoming information on the economy and financial conditions," Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester said on Wednesday. WASHINGTON (AP) — The global economy, which has proved surprisingly resilient this year, is expected to falter next year under the strain of wars, still-elevated inflation and continued high interest rates. The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development estimated Wednesday that international growth would slow to 2.7% in 2024 from an expected 2.9% pace this year. Despite the gloomier outlook, the organization is “projecting that recessions will be avoided almost everywhere,” OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said at a news conference. The OECD foresees U.S. inflation dropping from 3.9% this year to 2.8% in 2024 and 2.2% in 2025, just above the Fed’s 2% target level. They have been hurt by heightened interest rates and by the jump in energy prices that followed Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
