The measures were significant because Beijing has been holding back on a "bazooka" stimulus even though China's economy has been struggling to stage a convincing recovery post-pandemic. To be sure, this is not the first attempt China has made at boosting its economy in the past few years. However, Beijing's display of resolve also triggered market speculation that it's alarmed and panicked over the state of its economy, which is facing multiple challenges. Related storiesNotably, even on the heels of China's big stimulus announcement, most analysts also think Beijing still needs to do more to boost China's economy, particularly in boosting gloomy domestic demand. "Onshore stocks are a policy- and momentum-driven market, and policy signals don't get much clearer than this," they wrote.

The outcome of November's presidential election could have major implications for some popular technology stocks. Meanwhile, a victory by Vice President Kamala Harris may lead to tighter AI regulations focused on safety, ethics and protecting consumers. AI chip giant Nvidia is another likely winner in both split scenarios and a Republican sweep. Heightened antitrust controls over Google and its local search monopoly in a Democrat sweep and split Harris government should also benefit shares of Yelp down 27% this year. But it’s something politicians have struggled with achieving on their own — particularly amid an election cycle in which many young voters find themselves jaded with politics as a whole. Nearly 1 in 3 Americans may have an undiagnosed iron deficiency, a problem that can lead to fatigue, brain fog and difficulty concentrating, a new study suggests. An analysis of data from more than 8,000 adults in the U.S. revealed that 14% had low iron blood levels, a condition known as absolute iron deficiency, while 15% had the right iron levels but their bodies couldn’t use the essential mineral properly, known as functional iron deficiency, according to the report published Tuesday in JAMA Network Open. Doctors don’t typically screen adults for iron deficiency, which is why the condition has been overlooked in many people. There had been hints in other studies suggesting iron deficiency might be more widespread than doctors assume. The rates of iron deficiency between men and women are more similar after the age of menopause, experts said.

Missouri is set Tuesday to execute Marcellus Williams, a death row inmate whose case has spurred several efforts to save his life amid doubts about the evidence presented at his 2001 murder trial and the actions of a trial lawyer in the case. The attorneys are asking for the court to either find that those actions violated Williams’ rights or have a lower court address those issues. A St. Louis County circuit judge and Gayle’s family also agreed to the deal, but state Attorney General Andrew Bailey, a Republican, opposed it, and the state Supreme Court agreed. A judge ultimately rejected the motion to vacate, a ruling Williams’ attorneys appealed to the state Supreme Court in the hearing Monday. In addition to the state Supreme Court appeal, Williams’ attorneys also have an appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court and a clemency request before Missouri Gov.

Elliott Management said Tuesday it will call a special meeting at Southwest Airlines "as soon as next week," shortly after the company put forward a sweeping board shakeup that it hoped might stave off a proxy fight. The push comes days before the airline's investor meeting, where it is expected to unveil improvements and operating changes. Southwest's shareholder meeting is typically scheduled for May, but by calling for a special meeting Elliott is looking to elect new directors much sooner than that. Earlier this month, executive chairman and former CEO Gary Kelly said he would step down after the carrier's shareholder meeting next year. "The need for change is urgent, and our request for a special meeting may come as soon as next week," Pike and Xu said.

Shares in Bloom Energy could double if the fuel cell company wins a large deal to power data centers similar to the Three Mile Island nuclear plant restart , according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley values Constellation's contract with Microsoft at $100 per megawatt hour, compared to the typical market price of about $50 per megawatt hour. Including grid charges, the prices rises to $130 per megawatt hour, according to the bank. Bloom, however, is positioned to capture a so-called "time-to-power" premium by directly supplying a major data center, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley raised its price target to $22 from $20 in mid-August, 2024, and has rated Bloom Energy overweight since April 2023.

Around 100 demonstrators were present on the prison grounds protesting capital punishment and Williams’ execution, Pojmann said. Williams’ team filed a clemency petition to the US Supreme Court last week, noting Missouri’s previous governor had postponed Williams’ execution indefinitely amid questions about the integrity of Williams’ trial. Eric Greitens previously halted Williams’ execution and formed a board to investigate his case and determine whether he should be granted clemency. “The Board investigated Williams’ case for the next six years — until Governor Michael Parson abruptly terminated the process,” Williams’ attorneys wrote. “The Governor’s actions have violated Williams’ constitutional rights and created an exceptionally urgent need for the Court’s attention,” Williams’ attorneys said in court documents.

Prosecutors have already charged Ryan Wesley Routh with two firearms offenses, and a federal magistrate judge on Monday ordered him detained pending further court proceedings. The attempted assassination charge is “pretty rare,” according to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, a CNN senior law enforcement analyst. But it has been used in other high-profile attempted assassination cases, such as that of a man charged with traveling to Brett Kavanaugh’s Maryland home with a gun, burglary tools and other equipment in an apparent attempt on the Supreme Court justice’s life. To prove their case, prosecutors would have to convince a jury that Routh took affirmative steps to carry out a plot to kill the former president. Ron DeSantis said last week that the state “will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club.” Routh has not been charged in state court.

Los Angeles quarterback Justin Herbert left the Chargers’ 20-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers early Sunday after appearing to reaggravate the high-ankle sprain that had sidelined him in practice in the days leading up to the game. Herbert did not play the entire fourth quarter as the Chargers (2-1) lost for the first time, while Pittsburgh (3-0) remained undefeated under quarterback Justin Fields. The ground game wasn’t a boost, either, with the Chargers managing only 61 yards on 20 carries. Herbert left the stadium in a walking boot. After the loss to the Steelers, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters that going into Sunday, the team planned to remove Herbert if he showed any sign of a limp.

CNN —Four top operatives on Republican Mark Robinson’s campaign for North Carolina governor have stepped down, the campaign announced on Sunday, days after a CNN report uncovered inflammatory comments he made on a porn website. Robinson has a long history of making inflammatory statements but the newly unearthed message board posts go a step beyond. In an interview with CNN on Thursday, Robinson repeatedly denied that he made the comments on Nude Africa. Since the CNN report, some North Carolina Republicans have moved to pressure Robinson to drop out – though the state deadline for him to officially withdraw as a candidate has passed.
