In a staggering report last month, the Department of Justice documented pervasive abuse, illegal use of force, racial bias and systemic dysfunction in the Minneapolis Police Department. City police officers engaged in brutality or made racist comments, even as a department investigator rode along in a patrol car. And after George Floyd’s death, instead of ending the policy of racial profiling, the police just buried the evidence. The Minneapolis report was shocking, but it wasn’t surprising. It doesn’t read much differently from recent Justice Department reports about the police departments in Chicago, Baltimore, Cleveland, Albuquerque, New Orleans, Ferguson, Mo., or any of three recent reports from various sources about Minneapolis, from 2003, 2015 and 2016.

Via Zoom, a minister prompted Mikayla to look in a mirror to reflect on self-empowerment and recite: “One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.” After swallowing the first pill in the two-drug regimen, Mikayla recited a tenet about prioritizing science. The minister advised that after the pregnancy tissue was eventually expelled, Mikayla could recite: “By my body, my blood. Arguments for exemptions might also be persuasive because most abortion bans have some exceptions, like rape, experts said. “These should be very strong, compelling cases, but I also acknowledge that this is a highly political issue,” Ms. Platt said. “We’re in a completely new landscape,” Ms. Platt said.

Prescribed burns aren’t always welcomed by communities, however. They generate smoke and sometimes spread out of control. In New Mexico last year, a prescribed fire by the Forest Service blew into a 340,000-acre inferno that destroyed hundreds of homes and became the largest in state history. It prompted Forest Service Chief Randy Moore to suspend all the agency’s planned burns for 90 days. Eddie Moore/Albuquerque Journal/Zuma

One year without Roe v. Wade How access to abortion has changed The nearest abortion clinic became a lengthy journey for millions of peopleOne year ago on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide in the United States. When Roe v. Wade was overturned and states banned abortions, that number jumped almost 900 times to 16 million. The first map shows what the distance was when Roe v. Wade was in place and the second map shows what the distance is now, after Roe was overturned. The map on the left shows what the distance was in Guttmacher Institute’s “certain scenario” before Roe v. Wade was overturned. Two bar charts show that poverty and lack of healthcare both increase the farther one is from an abortion clinic with Roe v. Wade overturned.

Elsewhere in southwest Houston, Ms. Lakshmi tastes suya, bole, fufu, asun and jollof, tries her hand at pounding yam and practices the art of scooping soup with swallows. She moves from the kitchen at Margaret Chibuzo’s Safari restaurant to the dining room, where she shares egusi soup with the gospel singer Stacy Egbo. I encountered not just the Nigerian, but the Liberian, Ghanaian and broader West African communities in Newark and Charlotte, Atlanta and Albuquerque. By ensuring access to ingredients, they’d helped steward our shared culture a world away. Versions of egusi soup dotted menus in every city we stopped, and I relished each one.

CNN —Multiple people were shot and at least three people were killed at a motorcycle rally in Red River, New Mexico, on Saturday, Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun told CNN. One of those injured was airlifted to a hospital in Denver, New Mexico State Police said. New Mexico State Police had earlier tweeted that two people were killed and six people were injured. The fatal shooting occurred during the Red River Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally, said NMPD. “Please be safe, and send your prayers to Red River,” said Maestas in a Facebook post.

CNN —Multiple people were shot and at least three killed in a shooting in Farmington, New Mexico, police said in a Facebook post. Officers were involved in a shooting with a suspect, who was killed on scene, police said. A Farmington police officer and a New Mexico State Police officer were shot and are being treated for their injuries in the hospital. CNN has reached out to the city’s mayor and the New Mexico governor for comment. About 46,400 people live in Farmington, which is in northwestern New Mexico, just south of the Colorado state line.
May 15 (Reuters) - At least four people, including a suspect, were killed in a shooting on Monday, police said, in a New Mexico town that has experienced at least two other high-profile incidents of deadly gun violence in recent years. Law enforcement closed off seven blocks around the shooting scene, an area that encompasses the grounds of two churches, police said. The gun violence also prompted security lockdowns at several public schools in Farmington, a city of about 46,000 residents. Police said after the suspect was killed that there was no longer a threat to the public, and the lockdowns were lifted. Farmington also was the scene of a deadly high school shooting in December 2017 in which a gunman killed two students before taking his own life.
A number of birthing centers, Indian Health Service clinics, and Indian Health Service hospitals also use the "baby bot" process. Together, the bots and automation are expected to save more than 100,000 human worker hours each year, the New Mexico Human Services Department told Insider. The New Mexico Human Services Department has also been expanding its use of automation into other areas. In New Mexico, "digital workers" are programmed to execute a range of tasks and are assigned times in which to complete them. The "brainy bot" process also uses IBM AI technology, and it's run on a Salesforce platform, she said.
While traveling the world and sharing my research, parents would often come up to me and ask, "How can I use your findings to raise resilient kids?" But I've found that there's one skill in particular that has boosted my kids' confidence and resilience: how to "worry well." Instead of telling children not to worry, invite them to set aside time for "worry sessions." Set a timer for five minutes and ask your child to worry about every aspect of their concern. Children tend to only imagine the worst possible outcomes, so encourage them to focus on positive outcomes instead.

But time spent waiting robs early patients of their memory and ability to live independently. This condition is often, though not always, a sign of early Alzheimer's disease. PET scans cumbersomeTwo types of tests can diagnosis Alzheimer's disease: PET scans and spinal taps. Early Alzheimer's disease can also be diagnosed with a spinal tap, in which fluid around the spinal cord is extracted with a catheter and tested. A new study by RentCafe ranked the popularity of the 150 largest U.S. markets by tracking four metrics in each: the availability of apartments, listing views, listings saved as favorites, and saved personalized searches. Kansas City, Mo., landed in second place, followed by Albuquerque. Though scattered around the country, these markets share important traits — they’re relatively inexpensive and have healthy economies, according to the report. Next up was Detroit, which trailed only Kansas City among Midwest markets. Listings saved as favorites in the Motor City grew by more than 400 percent over a year, and saved searches grew by 150 percent — signs of its revival.
[1/2] Solar panels are set up in the solar farm at the University of California, Merced, in Merced, California, U.S. August 17, 2022. Their main question: will solar panels qualify if they are assembled in the United States using components made overseas? In February, top U.S. solar manufacturer First Solar Inc (FSLR.O) said it would delay further expansion decisions until Treasury releases its guidelines. A manufacturing group, Solar Energy Manufacturers for America (SEMA), said both manufacturers and developers want clear rules that will fuel growth. A potential approach could be to allow the bonus credit to apply to domestically available goods, with that standard changing over a set timeline.
A man who pinned a DC Police officer to a Capitol door on January 6 was sentenced to over 7 years in prison. "Your actions are some of the most egregious crimes that were committed on that dark day," said the judge. "Your actions are some of the most egregious crimes that were committed on that dark day," the judge told McCaughey. Federal prosecutors had sought a sentence of 15 years and eight months, which would have been the longest sentence given to any Capitol riot defendant. "I do not foresee that changing anytime soon," he told the judge, calling McCaughey a "foot solider" in the push to overturn the election.
A messy legal fight over the Food and Drug Administration's approval of the abortion pill mifepristone poses risks to the biopharma industry that go beyond the single drug. If a subsequent decision tosses out the pill's approval, it could potentially stifle innovation in the sector and deter investments in the development of life-changing drugs, biopharma companies and experts in law and economics say. More than 200 biopharma companies made a similar claim Monday in an open letter calling for the reversal of Kacsmaryk's decision. But Hastings said biopharma companies still respect the FDA when the agency turns down their drugs. Suliman offered a more hopeful take on how the legal fight could affect biopharma innovation.
But even if those legal efforts fail and last Friday's order by U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in Amarillo, Texas goes into effect, essentially rendering the drug unapproved, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration could nonetheless continue to allow access to the drug, legal experts say. The FDA, which has said it stands behind it determination that mifepristone is safe and effective, declined to comment. CONTRADICTORY RULINGSThe FDA approved mifepristone, which is the first of a two-drug regimen to terminate a pregnancy within the first 10 weeks, in 2000. Kacsmaryk put his ruling on hold until Friday to give the Biden administration, which supports access to abortion, time to pursue its appeal. 1985 PRECEDENTBut, even if the abortion pill's approval remains suspended, the FDA has precedent on its side to do nothing, legal experts said.
