Dec 10 (Reuters) - Air India is close to signing an order with Boeing Co to acquire up to 150 737 Max jets, the Economic Times newspaper reported on Saturday, citing sources. The Tata Group-owned Indian carrier will likely place a firm order for 50 737 Max planes with an option to pick up as many as 150, the ET report said. Boeing's last mega order in India came in 2021 when low-cost airline Akasa struck a deal to buy 72 737 MAX jets, valued at nearly $9 billion at list prices. Boeing declined to comment, saying it would "defer to Air India" for a response. Air India did not respond to a request for comment.
Air India to spend over $400 mln to refurbish cabin interiors
  + stars: | 2022-12-08 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
BENGALURU, Dec 8 (Reuters) - Air India would spend more than $400 million to refurbish the interiors of its entire wide-body fleet to attract more flyers after the carrier was taken over by Indian conglomerate Tata Group at the start of this year, it said on Thursday. The refurbishment will involve introduction of a premium economy cabin, it said in a statement, adding that the first aircraft with refurbished interiors will enter service in mid-2024. "Air India has committed to attain the highest standards of product and service befitting of a world class airline. We know that, at present, the cabin product on our 40 legacy widebody aircraft falls short of this standard," the company said. Once known for its lavishly decorated planes and stellar service, state-owned Air India was swept into a downward spiral due to mounting debt and ballooning losses.

Singapore Airlines extends its India runway

On Tuesday Singapore Airlines (SIAL.SI) and Indian conglomerate Tata agreed to merge their nine-year-old jointly owned carrier Vistara with Air India, whose enterprise was valued at $2.4 billion when Tata bought it just over a year ago. Air India, meanwhile, will get a deep-pocketed partner willing to inject as much as $615 million more in capital over the next couple of years, if needed. Singapore Airlines’ ability to finance the deal with cash speaks volumes about its strong financial position. In any event, its ability to upgrade its seat in India will serve Singapore Airlines well. Air India has implemented a new set of regulations regarding the appearance of its cabin crew. Some rules focus on cabin crew hair, especially if it indicates aging. Male cabin crew members are allowed to wear wedding bands. Earlier this year, Tata Group circulated a new policy that required Air India cabin crew to undergo body mass index and weight checks before flights. Air India argued that overweight crew could be a hazard in an emergency, but the Air India cabin crew union objected citing concerns about crew members' mental health and the lack of a medical professional present at the checks, India Today previously reported.

NEW DELHI, Nov 19 (Reuters) - Tata Group-owned Air India is in talks with Boeing and Airbus (AIR.PA) about ordering new aircraft and is meeting its immediate needs by leasing planes and repairing grounded aircraft, the airline's chief executive said on Saturday. Wilson said Air India planned to expand its fleet and global network, aiming to increase its market share to 30% on both domestic and international routes over the next five years. At present, Air India has a domestic market share of about 10% and an international market share of around 12%, according to industry estimates. Air India said in September it would lease 30 Boeing and Airbus planes, expanding its fleet by more than 25% as part of the drive to boost market share and to improve service levels. Industry sources said in July that Air India was moving closer to a decision on an order worth $50 billion at list prices to be split between Airbus and Boeing.
The Department of Transportation (DoT) has ordered six airlines to provide refunds to passengers. The refunds total more than $600 million among the airlines in question. The DoT also said it was considering penalties of $7.25 million for delays in providing refunds. The airline paid back $222 million in required refunds and is now facing a potential $2.2 million penalty from the department. US transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, said: "When a flight gets canceled, passengers seeking refunds should be paid back promptly.
Frontier Airlines leads the list of airlines targeted by the DOT, with the Denver-based carrier set to pay $222 million in refunds and an additional $2.2 million fine. “When a flight gets canceled, passengers seeking refunds should be paid back promptly," U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, said in a statement. "Whenever that doesn’t happen, we will act to hold airlines accountable on behalf of American travelers and get passengers their money back. Those dismal rates are largely a consequence of the pandemic and the airlines pivoting to respond to travel restrictions and lockdowns. And as the pandemic waned, airlines were caught flat-footed by the soaring demand from travelers eager to get out of town.
The U.S. Department of Transportation on Monday said it has ordered Frontier Airlines and five foreign carriers to pay about $600 million in refunds to travelers whose flights were canceled or significantly changed by the airlines. Travelers are entitled to a refund when airlines cancel their flights, but many customers were offered vouchers when airlines slashed flights during the pandemic. Frontier Airlines has been required to pay $222 million in refunds, the Department of Transportation said Monday. "It shouldn't take an enforcement action from the U.S. Department of Transportation to get airlines to pay refunds that they're required to pay," Buttigieg said on a call with reporters Monday. DOT said those five airlines together had to pay just over $400 million in refunds.
WASHINGTON, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Department said Monday that six airlines were slapped with $7.25 million in penalties and agreed to issue $622 million in passenger refunds as the agency vows to aggressively enforce consumer protections. "It shouldn't take enforcement action from (USDOT) to get airlines to pay the funds that they're required to pay." Buttigieg said under the settlements ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines (ULCC.O) was required to pay $222 million in refunds and will pay a $2.2 million penalty, while Tata Group-owned Air India will pay $121.5 million in required refunds and a $1.4 million fine. State-owned TAP Portugal will issue $126.5 million in required refunds and pay a $1.1 million penalty, and Colombia's Avianca (AVT_p.CN) will pay $76.8 million in required refunds and pay a $750,000 penalty. El Al Israel Airlines (ELAL.TA) will issue $61.9 million in required refunds and pay a $900,000 penalty, and Mexico's Aeromexico (AEROMEX.MX) will pay $13.6 million in required refunds and a $900,000 fine.
NEW DELHI, Oct 18 (Reuters) - The Indian government should focus on privatisation of state-run companies instead of chasing high divestment targets, a top finance ministry official said on Tuesday, pointing to market volatility and investors' shaky appetite for risk. "We should actually have moderate targets and more focus should be on privatising," Tuhin Kanta Pandey, secretary in the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management, told Reuters in an interview. High targets lead to a perception that the government will sell minority stakes in state-run companies, prompting a fall in share prices of such firms, Pandey said. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman last year announced plans to privatise all state-run companies barring a few in strategic sectors such as defence and telecommunications. Earlier this month, India invited initial bids to sell a 60.72% stake in IDBI Bank.
