Researchers found that LLMs produced higher-quality outputs when emotional language was used to talk to AI chatbots. Other examples of emotional language added to prompts include "You'd better be sure," "Take pride in your work and give it your best. Prompts with emotional language, according to the study, generated an overall 8% performance improvement in outputs for tasks like "Rephrase the sentence in formal language" and "Find a common characteristic for the given objects." AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen outputs were separately reviewed by a sample of 106 humans, researchers found that the emotional prompts elicited an overall 10.9% improvement to knowledge-based queries like "What happens to you if you eat watermelon seeds?" To write the best ChatGPT prompts, AI experts suggest assigning ChatGPT a specific role, providing ample context, breaking down the desired output into a series of steps, and being as specific as possible.

The model, codenamed as “Olympus”, has 2 trillion parameters, the people said, which could make it one of the largest models being trained. OpenAI's GPT-4 model, one of the best models available, is reported to have one trillion parameters. As head scientist of artificial general intelligence (AGI) at Amazon, Prasad brought in researchers who had been working on Alexa AI and the Amazon science team to work on training models, uniting AI efforts across the company with dedicated resources. It has also partnered with AI model startups such as Anthropic and AI21 Labs, offering them to Amazon Web Services (AWS) users. Training bigger AI models is more expensive given the amount of computing power required.

The race to build AI as smart as humans, or AGI, looks like it suffered a major blow. Google researchers found the transformer technology behind AI isn't very good at generalizing. AdvertisementAdvertisementGoogle researchers may have just given a major reality check to the ambitions of CEOs in chase of AI's holy grail. As it stands, AI is pretty good at specific tasks but less great at transferring skills across domains like humans do. AdvertisementAdvertisementTransformers' opacity and the scale of the data they're pretrained on gave some the illusion that they generalize beyond it.

It also touted a new version of its AI model called GPT-4 with vision, or GPT-4V, that enables the chatbot to analyze images. ChatGPT has more than 100 million weekly active users and 2 million developers, spread “entirely by word of mouth," Altman said. The conference comes a week after President Joe Biden signed an executive order that will set some of the first U.S. guardrails on AI technology. The order built on voluntary commitments set by the White House that leading AI developers made earlier this year. OpenAI also faces competition from developers of so-called open source models that publicly release their code and other aspects of the system for free.

watch nowThe boss of Google DeepMind pushed back on a claim from Meta's artificial intelligence chief alleging the company is pushing worries about AI's existential threats to humanity to control the narrative on how best to regulate the technology. "If your fearmongering campaigns succeed, they will *inevitably* result in what you and I would identify as a catastrophe: a small number of companies will control AI," LeCun said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Sunday. I also know that producing AI systems that are safe and under our control is possible. "Then there's sort of the misuse of AI by bad actors repurposing technology, general-purpose technology for bad ends that they were not intended for. "And then finally, I think about the more longer-term risk, which is technical AGI [artificial general intelligence] risk," Hassabis said.

Photo: Nikki Ritcher for The Wall Street JournalIn the fast-moving world of artificial intelligence, talk about the future tends to focus on something referred to as “artificial general intelligence”—the stage at which AI will be capable of doing any job a human can do, only better. Perhaps no company is in a better position to talk about the potential benefits and risks of this so-called AGI than OpenAI (49%-owned by Microsoft ), the creators of the popular chatbot ChatGPT. Roubini explained that the future of technology and the singularity are concerning as artificial intelligence is integrated into the workplace. Another "megathreat" Roubini discussed is global warming and how companies claiming to reach net zero are behind. Unfortunately, many of the commitments to net zero done by many businesses or even financial institutions are more like corporate PR rather than real plans. Everybody says we're going to reach net zero, but there's a lot of greenwashing and green wishing rather than real specific plans.

Meta's chief AI scientist Yann LeCun said that superintelligent AI is unlikely to wipe out humanity. He told the Financial Times that current AI models are less intelligent than a cat. AI CEOs signed a letter in May warning that superintelligent AI could pose an "extinction risk." However, LeCun told the Financial Times that many AI companies had been "consistently over-optimistic" over how close current generative models were to AGI, and that fears over AI extinction were overblown as a result.
