A dozen Republicans are campaigning to secure their party’s nomination in next year’s presidential election. But the race between them is not remotely close, according to a New York Times/Siena College poll that was released today. Donald Trump leads his next closest challenger, Ron DeSantis, by 37 percentage points. And no leading presidential candidate has ever faced the kind of federal and state charges that Trump currently does. Trump’s lead is thanks in large part to what Nate calls his MAGA base, which represents roughly 37 percent of the Republican electorate and is exceptionally loyal to Trump.

“As it stands right now, you will be voting in Iowa, while multiple criminal cases are pending against former President Trump,” Hutchinson said. Donald Trump is not running for president to represent the people that voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” Hurd said to loud boos. “Donald Trump is running to stay out of prison,” he said as jeers started to crescendo. But if Trump is to be stopped, there is no sign so far that it will happen in Iowa. Unlike some of the other GOP candidates, Trump is not using the dinner to also hold multiple Iowa campaign stops.

To the Editor:Re “Trump Thrives in a Broken System. He’ll Get Us There Soon,” by Thomas L. Friedman (column, June 14):Mr. Friedman is exactly right. Donald Trump will finally be tried in a federal court of law after being indicted. We have to believe that nobody — nobody meaning even an ex-president and possible future president — is above the law. Almost beyond belief, Judge Aileen M. Cannon has been randomly selected to preside over the court proceedings.

As seriously as the winter wind, blowing in the same bare place, with the nothing that is not there and the nothing that is. There is no such thing as a safe race against Donald Trump. Nicole Hemmer If you haven’t learned to take Trump seriously as a candidate by now, nothing will convince you. But as the front-runner for the nomination and someone with a penchant for destroying democratic institutions, we should take his candidacy very, very seriously. Donald Trump leads his nearest rival by about 32 points.

This obsession makes “I Think You Should Leave” the perfect comedy for our overheated cultural moment. The panics over “cancel culture” and the “woke mob” — these are symptoms of a fragmented society wondering if, in a time of flux, it still meaningfully shares social rules. “I Think You Should Leave” makes comedy, relentlessly, out of moments when the social rules break down. Almost always, sketches start quietly. By the end of the party, everyone has come over to his side — including the baby, who smiles at him.

Mark Pomerantz, author, "People vs. Donald Trump: An Inside Account," appears on "Meet the Press" in Washington, Feb. 12, 2023. A former prosecutor refused Friday to answer questions at a deposition by the House Judiciary Committee about a criminal investigation of Donald Trump in which he once played a leading role. The Judiciary Committee, whose chairman Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio is a close Republican ally of Trump, has been investigating whether the Manhattan District Attorney's Office probe and charging of Trump was politically motivated. He argued he had the right to not answer questions if they were not pertinent "to a legitimate legislative function." Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., a committee member, told reporters later Pomerantz refused to answer any questions at the deposition.
A Manhattan jury found Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll on Tuesday. After deliberating for 2 1/2 hours, a Manhattan jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse against Carroll in an incident that took place in the 1990s in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room. The jury did not find Trump liable for rape, which was an option. "There wasn't even a 'he said,' because Donald Trump never even looked you in the eye and said she was a liar," he said. Donald Trump, on the other hand, failed to even show up in court."

To the Editor:Re “Trump Is Found Liable for Sexual Abuse and Defamation” (nytimes.com, May 9):It is an important day, even if it has little effect on the finances of Donald Trump, or on those who will forever believe he walks on water. The aura of invincibility — his “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters” mantra that has largely proved accurate through all of his life, even through two impeachments, even with the multiple pending investigations bearing down — has now been badly damaged. If E. Jean Carroll can convince a jury that this defendant can be held accountable, then who is to suggest that criminal prosecutions are not capable of reaching the same results? If those who find every aspect of Donald Trump reprehensible were recently buoyed by his criminal indictment in the Stormy Daniels matter, today brings a sense of satisfaction. And more than a little relief that the wheels of justice still turn, even for Mr. Trump.
Chris Christie on Sunday called former President Trump's 2024 bid a "vanity exercise." The former governor is mulling a 2024 campaign of his own and is set to make a decision this month. Chris Christie of New Jersey on Sunday once again blasted former President Donald Trump's presidential campaign, calling the ex-president's 2024 effort a "vanity exercise to try to make himself feel better." "I'm very concerned that what we're heading towards is a Trump-Biden rematch," Christie said. The former governor has indicated that he would make a decision about a 2024 campaign sometime this month.

It’s been 64 years since Congress added new states to the union — Alaska and Hawaii, in 1959. And it’s been 94 years since Congress capped the size of the House of Representatives at 435 members. For more than 50 years, the United States has been frozen in a kind of structural and constitutional stasis. Our stagnant political system has produced a stagnant political landscape. President Barack Obama won his second term by around 4 percentage points, and President Biden won by a similar margin in 2020.

Political colorists can be promiscuous in calling states purple, but my state is true to that hue. Donald Trump prevailed in North Carolina that same year, but only barely. Nearly 2.6 million North Carolinians declare themselves unaffiliated, while just over 2.4 million identify as Democrats and just under 2.2 million as Republicans. That’s a huge comedown from what Republicans wanted and from what they’ve repeatedly tried to get for nearly 15 years. Without any fear that the state’s Supreme Court will foil them before the 2024 congressional elections, they don’t have to settle for it.
This conversation took place when the country was bearing down on the 2016 election, and Nader vowed not to vote for either Trump or Clinton. “They’re not alike,” he acknowledged, but added, “they’re both terrible.”Think that was the last time I ever consulted Ralph Nader. Well, a few days before the election the Green candidate — have I mentioned her name was Angela Green? As senator, Sinema became an, um, unreliable Democratic vote. Another senator who frequently drives Democratic leaders crazy is Joe Manchin of West Virginia, who hasn’t announced his own plans.

To the Editor:Re “In Vivid Detail, Trump Accuser Tells Her Story” (front page, April 27):Clear evidence suggests that Donald Trump sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll. As is his pattern, he denies it from a distance on social media but doesn’t come to court and face cross-examination. He did the same thing each time he was impeached: talked tough but hid like a coward — did not testify. How many men would stay home if they were innocent of such a charge? Would not come into court and deny it forcefully, deny it vehemently?
The last truly significant amendment — the 26th, which lowered the voting age to 18 — belonged to another era, in 1971, when Richard Nixon was president. It looked to be sailing to ratification, for which the Constitution requires approval by three-quarters of the states. in 1972, it included a ratification deadline, providing that the amendment would be part of the Constitution “when ratified within seven years” — that is, 1979. What Article V of the Constitution does say is that Congress is in charge of proposing amendments that it deems necessary. If the deadline power belongs to Congress, shouldn’t the power to change any deadlines it imposes — as well as the power to refuse to recognize rescissions — also lie with Congress?
E. Jean Carroll alleges Donald Trump raped her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the 1990s. "Law & Order: SVU" featured a rape scene at the same store in 2012. She claimed that, in the mid-1990s, Trump raped her in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman's lingerie section. In the dressing room, Trump pushed her against the wall, penetrated her with his finger, and raped her, Carroll said. "Law and Order: SVU."
(Advisory: this article contains profanity)A fake screenshot claiming to show a Truth Social post from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s official account criticizing former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence for testifying before a grand jury is doing the rounds online. Growing Republican support for Donald Trump's re-election won't be enough, Chris Sununu said. On NBC, the New Hampshire governor said Trump is a "four-time loser" who has cost the GOP seats in Congress. "Donald Trump is a loser," Gov. Donald Trump is a loser. So, Donald Trump is positioning himself to be a four-time loser in 2024."
A federal judge in Manhattan handed Trump's NY prosecutors their first legal setback Wednesday. Ex-prosecutor Mark Pomerantz must now testify before the House Judiciary Committee as early as Thursday. The inquiry will also explore the need for legislation to protect former presidents from "political prosecution," judiciary committee attorney Matthew B. Berry had argued. Lawyers for both sides — the judiciary committee and Bragg's office — are accusing each other of abusing their power for political gain. Attorneys for the judiciary committee did not immediately respond to emails requesting comment on the decision; a spokeswoman for Bragg said an appeal will be filed in hopes of delaying Thursday's testimony.
Donald Trump's attorney argued the former president can't get a fair trial in Manhattan. Donald Trump was born in New York City, where his family built their empire. Even before he was officially charged, Trump complained that the investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg was politically motivated. Donald Trump was quoted in the obituary saying he was grateful that his father focused his construction business in Brooklyn and Queens. ''It was good for me,'' a chuckling Donald Trump said, according to the Times.
Stormy Daniels celebrated former President Donald Trump's arrest on Tuesday. "It's definitely more fun being under my sexy man instead of under arrest," she wrote in her tweet. Daniels says she had an affair with Trump in 2006, a year after he married Melania Trump. Donald Trump has denied the affair. Representatives for Trump and Daniels did not immediately respond to Insider's requests for comment sent outside regular business hours.
Adult actress Stormy Daniels is at the heart of Donald Trump's recent indictment. "I am fully aware of the insanity of it being a porn star," Daniels told The Times of London in an interview. The Manhattan district attorney's office has been investigating Trump's personal and business finances for nearly five years, including the hush-money payment. The crime in question likely has to do with how Trump handled a payment reimbursing Cohen for the hush-money payment to Daniels. A spokesperson for Daniels and Trump's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.
A Manhattan grand jury voted to indict Donald Trump, possibly over a "hush-money" payment. Here's a timeline of Trump and Daniels' alleged relationship, the $130,000 payment to keep Daniels silent, and the testimonies leading to a possible indictment.
