Like Chuck Berry's guitar, Lewis' piano was essential in shaping rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s. "Jerry Lee thinks that Jerry Lee is too wicked to be saved." His young son Steve Allen Lewis drowned in 1962 and another son, Jerry Lee Jr., died in a 1973 car accident at 19. In his later years he settled down but biographer Rick Bragg recalled interviewing Lewis for his 2014 book "Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Words." "I don't think Jerry Lee Lewis had to exaggerate his life one bit to make it interesting," Bragg told the Atlanta Constitution Journal.

Still, the company expects to report full-year profit above its prior forecast of $9.25 to $9.65 per share. The blending of work and leisure travel has also caught up, executives in the travel industry have said in recent months. Revenue rose 24% to $13.6 billion, while expenses climbed 19% as AmEx had to spend heavily on customer rewards, compensation and marketing.
Oct 20 (Reuters) - American Airlines Group Inc (AAL.O) on Thursday forecast that fourth-quarter profit would exceed analyst estimates after posting better-than-expected earnings in the third quarter, as demand for travel remained resilient despite higher airfare and growing risks of an economic recession. American is the latest airline to provide an upbeat forecast even as a worsening economic outlook has sparked worries about travel spending. Carriers, however, say an unquenched thirst for travel, hybrid work arrangements and limited airline capacity would keep their business humming. American said demand for domestic and short-haul international travel is "very strong", and lifting of travel restrictions and testing requirements around the globe are expected to further drive up long-haul international traffic. Adjusted profit for the third quarter came in at 69 cents per share, topping analysts' expectations of 56 cents a share.

Then came the pandemic and a property crisis, and with them, clear evidence of the limits of the debt-fuelled, investment-driven model that had propelled China's economy and businesses like Shores'. "If there is no investment, consumption will be like a tree without roots," said Jia, who previously led a finance ministry think tank. Many uncertainties hang over China's economy: the zero-COVID policy, a crackdown on tech and other industries, geopolitical tensions and rising borrowing costs in export markets. China is widely expected to miss this year's 5.5% GDP growth target and Natixis estimates growth may not even top 3% a year into Xi's next mandate. Oxford Economics expects average annual GDP growth this decade to halve from the 1999-2019 average to 4.5% and slow to 3% in the decade after.
REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationNEW YORK, Sept 27 (Reuters Breakingviews) - American presidents often use economic sanctions as a geopolitical lever against countries with whom they are in conflict but have stopped short of a shooting war. Yet while sanctions can inflict severe economic pain, history suggests they lack a decisive political punch. The sanctions against Russia were swift and closely coordinated. Meanwhile, authorities slapped targeted sanctions on hundreds of Russian individuals, defense and transport firms, financial institutions, tech groups and energy companies. Economic restrictions sped up the country’s transition from apartheid to majority rule by the African National Congress.

Brendan Smialowski | Afp | Getty ImagesU.S. President Joe Biden said U.S forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, his most explicit statement on the issue, drawing an angry response from China that said it sent the wrong signal to those seeking an independent Taiwan. Asked to clarify if he meant that unlike in Ukraine, U.S. forces - American men and women - would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, Biden replied: "Yes." He also made clear then that our Taiwan policy hasn't changed. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told a regular briefing in Beijing that Biden's comments sent a "seriously wrong signal" to separatists forces for Taiwan independence.
NEW YORK, Sept 15 (Reuters) - American playwright August Wilson's "The Piano Lesson" is returning to Broadway, with Samuel L. Jackson starring and his wife directing. LaTanya Richardson Jackson, in her Broadway directing debut, has a more literal take on the story than her predecessors. Samuel Jackson, playing Doaker Charles, returns to the work after playing the character's nephew Boy Willie in its first production at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1987. "By the time the play traveled and came back to Broadway and I was an understudy, I was pretty much devastated that I wasn't going to make my Broadway debut," the actor said. John David Washington, making his Broadway debut as Boy Willie, is dealing with many different feelings, he said.
