Leaving their conference meeting, House Republicans said Johnson made clear the immigration deal is “absolutely dead.”“I just heard Speaker Johnson saying it’s absolutely dead, which is what I wanted to hear,” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia told CNN. “I have talked to former President Trump about this issue at length and he understands that we have a responsibility to do here.”Johnson added, “The president of course, President Trump, wants to secure the country. President Trump is the one that talked about border security before anyone else did. Biden said in a statement on Friday the deal that Senate negotiators have worked toward is both tough and fair. Senior House Republicans on Tuesday attacked the Senate’s immigration compromise, despite not having final text, and vowed that it will not pass the House.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago will again extend its 60-day limit on shelter stays for asylum seekers, Mayor Brandon Johnson announced, just days ahead of a deadline that could have evicted nearly 2,000 migrants. Chicago and other U.S. cities, including New York and Denver, have put shelter limits in place as they struggle to house and care for the growing population of migrants arriving by bus and plane. Extensions will be based on migrants' original dates to exit the system and will be either 30 or 60 days, city officials said. For example, nearly 2,000 people who were set to leave on Thursday will now get another 60 days. Any migrants newly entering shelters will get the standard 60 days.

CNN —President Joe Biden is embracing tougher border measures, including shutting down the US-Mexico border, marking a stark shift from his early days in office as he tries to fend off former President Donald Trump’s attacks on immigration policy ahead of the election. “(The compromise) would give me, as President, a new emergency authority to shut down the border when it becomes overwhelmed. Johnson on Saturday attacked Biden over his endorsement of the potential border deal, arguing the president can take executive action without Congress to clamp down on migrant crossings. And in his first statement on the Senate deal, Johnson claimed that it would force the US to surrender to illegal migration. Immigrant advocates quickly slammed Biden over his statement — revealing the deepening rift between the president and the advocacy community.

The answer explains why Congress is racing to wind down what is known as the employee retention tax credit. Lawmakers aim to use the savings to offset the cost of three business tax breaks and a more generous child tax credit for many low-income families. Households benefitting from the changes in the child tax credit would see an average tax cut of $680 in the first year, according to an estimate from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Under current law, taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to claim the employee retention credit. But in this case, the employee retention tax credit appears to have few friends left on Capitol Hill.

WASHINGTON (AP) — New Speaker Mike Johnson finds himself leading House Republicans with a majority in name only. Approaching his first 100 days on the job, Johnson faces daunting choices ahead. “The House Republicans have the second-smallest majority in history," he said. But the deal is already wobbling, as House Speaker Mike Johnson faces intense pressure from Trump and his House allies to demand more sweeping concessions from Democrats and the White House. “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people,” Trump posted on social media this week. During Iowa's Republican caucuses last week, which Trump won, immigration was a top issue. They argue that the changes would actually pave the way for Trump to implement his border agenda if he wins the election. Even beyond Trump, Johnson is dealing with far-right House members who are furious over his willingness to work with Democrats to pass legislation.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Congress sent President Joe Biden a short-term spending bill on Thursday that would avert a looming partial government shutdown and fund federal agencies into March. House Republicans have fought bitterly over budget levels and policy since taking the majority at the start of 2023.
