Based on premarket prices, Morgan Stanley shares were hovering around $101, representing a much better level to take some off. Tech stocks surged: Nvidia shares popped 4.8%, Tesla shares gained 5.4%, Meta Platforms shares rose 3.5% and Apple shares climbed 3.5%. The Fed on Wednesday cut rates by half a point, marking its first rate cut since the onset of the Covid pandemic and bringing rates down from a 23-year high. A large rate cut can be a double-edged sword for the economy. The Fed faced pressure to cut rates in July but held steady instead.

At a regular news conference Wednesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the case was being investigated. China’s foreign ministry has described both attacks as isolated incidents and did not release further information on the motives.

The influential Teamsters union on Wednesday declined to issue an endorsement in the presidential race, Megan Lebowitz and Alexandra Marquez report. Prior to the announcement, the Teamsters also released survey data showing more rank-and-file members preferred to endorse Trump than Harris. Still, Harris has won the endorsement of just about every other major labor union in the country (the International Association of Fire Fighters remains a notable holdout). Instead, the Trump campaign appears to be approaching this apparent assassination attempt as an opportunity rather than as a moment to reflect.

“Saturday Night Live” has set its first batch of hosts for Season 50, including Ariana Grande, John Mulaney, Michael Keaton and more. Grande will host “SNL” for the second time on Oct. 12 with musical guest Stevie Nicks. Coldplay will join him in the band’s eighth appearance as musical guest. Grande will lead “Saturday Night Live” ahead of “Wicked,” coming to theaters Nov. 22, as Fleetwood Mac icon Nicks returns after her first “SNL” performance in 1983. “Saturday Night Live” will celebrate its 50th season with a live primetime special on Feb. 16.

WASHINGTON — Billie Jean King will become the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey announced Tuesday that their bipartisan legislation had passed the House of Representatives and would be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature. The bill to honor King, the tennis Hall of Famer and activist, had already passed unanimously in the Senate. The medal, awarded by Congress for distinguished achievements and contributions to society, has previously been given to athletes including baseball players Jackie Robinson and Roberto Clemente, and golfers Jack Nicklaus, Byron Nelson and Arnold Palmer. King had already been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Harvey Weinstein was arraigned on an additional sex crimes charge in a New York City courtroom Wednesday, roughly two months ahead of a retrial in the disgraced Hollywood producer’s landmark #MeToo case. “Thanks to this survivor who bravely came forward, Harvey Weinstein now stands indicted for an additional alleged violent sexual assault,” Bragg said. “This investigation is ongoing.”In all, more than 80 women have accused Weinstein of sexual assault or harassment going back decades.
