Beryl is set to emerge in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend after it roars through the Caribbean and Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. The National Hurricane Center’s forecast calls for Beryl to restrengthen as it tracks across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this weekend. It will then push toward Mexico’s coast and make landfall Sunday night in far northeastern Mexico. Anyone from Mexico’s eastern Gulf Coast to Texas and even Louisiana should keep a close watch on the forecast in the coming days. Even if Beryl makes landfall in northeastern Mexico, wind and rain from the cyclone will likely impact parts of the US’s Gulf Coast.

Ismail Kadare, the Albanian novelist and poet who single-handedly wrote his isolated Balkan homeland onto the map of world literature, creating often dark, allegorical works that obliquely criticized the country’s totalitarian state, died in Tirana, Albania, on Monday. In a literary career that spanned half a century, Mr. Kadare (pronounced kah-dah-RAY) wrote scores of books, including novels and collections of poems, short stories and essays. He shot to international fame in 1970 when his first novel, “The General of the Dead Army,” was translated into French. Mr. Kadare’s name was floated several times for the Nobel Prize, but the honor eluded him. In 2005, he received the inaugural Man Booker International Prize (now the International Booker Prize), awarded to a living writer of any nationality for overall achievement in fiction.

“It would be a Category 5 hurricane,” said one top Democratic official nervous about Biden considering what would happen if the president stepped aside. Biden campaign aides have spent the last couple of days pointing to metrics like some of their best grassroots fundraising days and a surge in job applications since Thursday. Biden is heading to the Camp David presidential retreat where he was expected to spend the rest of the weekend. Democratic operatives always like to mock headlines that describe them as “in disarray.” Now some tell CNN they worry they could end up in more disarray than ever. “President Biden is the nominee and he’s going to remain the nominee,” said Cutter, who is on contract to produce the convention.

Families who lost loved ones in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, Texas, said the Thursday arrest of former school district police chief Pete Arredondo is not a “happy moment” and are calling for more indictments. Arredondo, 52, was arrested on an indictment charging him with 10 counts of abandoning/endangering a child in connection with the May 24, 2022, school shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers. Those 10 counts are in connection with schoolchildren who survived the shooting, but experienced delays in receiving care and protection. A second officer was also indicted on multiple similar charges, according to a parent of one of the slain children, who asked not to be identified. He said the charges were a good step, calling it “a very emotional day for me.”“I don’t think it’s enough,” he said.

I truly don't," said Rep. Greg Landsman of Ohio when asked if he's entertaining the idea of Biden not being the nominee. "You know, I think the President and his team are gonna huddle up and have a conversation, and we'll see what happens." Rep. Robert Garcia, a Biden campaign surrogate who traveled to the debate on Thursday, was left insisting to a large circle of skeptical reporters that Biden simply "had a raspy voice." Democrats who want to see Biden step aside are essentially facing a collective action problem. If they were to band together and declare that Biden needs to step aside, they may be able to have an impact.

Former Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arrendondo and former school police officer Adrian Gonzales were named in the indictments, which represent the first criminal charges filed in the school massacre. The two officers face felony charges of abandoning and endangering a child, Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell told the Uvalde Leader-News, and one of them was expected to surrender later Thursday. Earlier this year, the US Justice Department released a damning report that concluded law enforcement officers had many opportunities to reassess their flawed response to the May 24, 2022 shooting at Robb Elementary School. Instead, it took 77 minutes from when the 18-year-old shooter walked into Robb Elementary School until he was stopped. Critical failures in leadership among specific law enforcement officers who rushed to Robb Elementary are cited by the Justice Department, whose 575-page report was released nearly 20 months after the massacre.

Like many politicians with national ambitions, she has written a book about her life and her vision for the country. It’s called “True Gretch” (she told me that’s a play on the 1969 John Wayne classic “True Grit”). CNN —Astronomers are witnessing a never-before-seen spectacle in the cosmos: the awakening of a supermassive black hole at the center of a distant galaxy. In late 2019, a team of astronomers took notice of an otherwise unremarkable galaxy named SDSS1335+0728, 300 million light-years away in the Virgo constellation. “If so, this would be the first time that we see the activation of a massive black hole in real time.”Sleeping celestial giantsSupermassive black holes are classified as having masses more than 100,000 times that of our sun. “In the case of SDSS1335+0728, we were able to observe the awakening of the massive black hole, (which) suddenly started to feast on gas available in its surroundings, becoming very bright.”Previous research has pointed to inactive galaxies that appeared to become active after several years, which is usually triggered by black hole activity, but the process of a black hole awakening has never been directly observed before, until now, Hernández García said. The same scenario may play out with Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, but astronomers aren’t sure how likely it is to occur, Ricci said.

As Russian aerial bombardments of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, have intensified, the evacuation of Plombir, a 15-year-old male, and Miranda, a 14-year-old female, came just in time, marine mammal experts said. “If they had continued in Kharkiv, their chances of survival would have been very slim,” said Daniel Garcia-Párraga, director of zoological operations at Oceanogràfic de Valencia, who helped lead the rescue. Belugas, whose natural habitat is the Arctic, need cold water to survive. California's labor regulator on Tuesday said it fined Amazon nearly $6 million for violating a state law aimed at curtailing the use of onerous warehouse productivity quotas. The California Labor Commissioner's Office said it investigated two Amazon facilities in Moreno Valley and Redlands, both located east of Los Angeles, and found 59,017 violations of the state's Warehouse Quotas law, officials said. The Warehouse Quotas law went into effect in 2022 and requires employers to disclose productivity quotas to employees and government agencies, as well as any discipline workers may face for not meeting them. The law also prohibits employers from requiring warehouse employees to meet unsafe quotas preventing them from taking state-mandated meal and rest breaks or using the bathroom. The Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has also cited Amazon numerous times for safety violations.

A California labor regulator said on Tuesday that it had fined Amazon nearly $6 million for thousands of violations of a safety law that took effect in 2022. The measure, known as the Warehouse Quotas Law, lets employees request written explanations of any productivity quotas that apply to them, as well as explanations of any discipline they may face in failing to meet the quotas. The state labor commissioner’s office said Amazon violated the law more than 59,000 times at two Southern California warehouses between October and March. The system that Amazon used in the two warehouses “is exactly the kind of system that the Warehouse Quotas Law was put in place to prevent,” the labor commissioner, Lilia García-Brower, said in a statement.
