The beverage has had a starring role in the 2024 campaign because, it turns out, both vice-presidential candidates are fans of it. That suggests some artificially sweetened version of horseshoe theory, with left and right arriving at a similar destination, a carbonated détente. It’s also zero calories per serving, and neither man seems to be a metabolic marvel liberated from any worry about weight. President Theodore Roosevelt, so appreciative of nature, plucked mint from the White House garden for juleps. President Donald Trump, so given to excess, drank as many as 12 Diet Cokes a day.

Why Americans are snubbing McDonald’s and Starbucks
  + stars: | 2024-07-31 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
New York CNN —On the surface, it looks like Americans are laying off the Big Macs, booze and even — gasp! On Monday, McDonald’s reported sales fell 0.7% in the US from the same period in 2023. The once reliably cheap McDonald’s pushed its prices up, while sit-down restaurants leaned into value and convenience. Applebee’s, for one, made a direct pitch to the hordes of ticked-off McDonald’s customers who felt the chain had abused its pricing power. Now, McDonald’s is trying to win back poorer customers while appealing to more affluent customers who want something new.

CNN —A routine part of the job for Southwest Airlines flight attendants is turning into a dangerous mess as a searing summer heat and the airline’s beverage management practices have made soda cans volatile mid-flight. There were more than 100 reports of soda cans exploding on flights in June, Southwest flight attendant union president Bill Bernal told CNN, some of which have injured flight attendants. Southwest Airlines wouldn’t comment on the number of incidents and injuries or their nature, but confirmed to CNN the issue is occurring. “Both the short term and long term fixes are actual engineered fixes that should eventually all but eradicate the exploding can issue at Southwest Airlines,” Bernal said.
