Emerson Electric (EMR) reported disappointing quarterly results on Wednesday, pushing shares of the technology and engineering company down 5% and forcing a downgrade on our newest holding. As a result, we are putting Emerson Electric in the "penalty box" and downgrading shares to a 2 rating from a 1. A penalty box means the stock has one quarter to show improvement — and should it fail to do so, it gets booted from the portfolio. Geographically, sales growth was driven by the Americas, which was up 13% versus the year-ago period. On the other hand, the earnings-per-share guide, which along with underlying sales growth is in line with the guidance previously provided, came in a penny short at the midpoint.
Thomas Bertrand built a Shopify app after years of selling on the e-commerce platform. He launched his Shopify store, Bento&co, where he sells bento boxes and related accessories, in 2008. But he also created an app on Shopify's App Store that was directly inspired by his years as a merchant. Shopify's app store is home to more than 7,000 apps to help merchants with tasks like store design, product sourcing, SEO, marketing, and shipping. Shopify's merchants made $46.2 billion in sales on the platform in the third quarter of 2022 alone.
Rep. Lauren Boebert told a crowd God may use them to stand in front of "demons," or a "speaker of the House." Boebert, though she was coy about what House speaker she referred to, tried to block McCarthy's bid. Boebert has previously invoked religion and politics, saying "the church is supposed to control the government." After negotiations within the party and 15 rounds of voting, McCarthy was finally elected speaker last month, kicking off the new Congress. Andrew Whitehead, a sociologist at IUPUI and co-author of "Taking America Back for God: Christian Nationalism in the United States," told Insider at the time her comments touched on Christian nationalist imagery that's linked to violence.
Here’s how Bed Bath & Beyond, once a retailer pioneer, veered to the edge of bankruptcy and where it turns next. Brands coveted a spot on Bed Bath & Beyond’s shelves, knowing it would lead to big sales. Discount chains such as HomeGoods and TJ Maxx and have also undercut Bed Bath & Beyond’s prices. Without the differentiators of the lowest prices or widest selection, Bed Bath & Beyond’s sales stagnated from 2012 to 2019. Otherwise, too much of Bed Bath & Beyond’s revenue will go toward repaying debt that it won’t be able to turn a profit.

She never saw McGonigal pay. "The notion that Mr. Deripaska is some proxy for the Russian state is a blatant lie," Ruben Bunyatyan, a spokesperson for Deripaska, told Insider by email. McGonigal was not charged with espionage, and although there is currently no evidence that McGonigal committed espionage, an FBI source told Insider that the investigation is ongoing. At the FBI, McGonigal racked up a string of big cases and promotions. "He said he needed to make more money," Guerriero told Insider.
Roughly one year ago, a handful of crypto heavyweights made swaggering debuts on the Super Bowl ad roster, airing costly commercials with messages like “Don’t miss out” (FTX) and “Fortune favors the brave” (Crypto.com). Then came the swoon in crypto and the bankruptcy of FTX. Recently, trading firm OKX scuttled its plans to buy an ad in Super Bowl LVII when FTX began to dominate the news cycle. Coinbase aims to convey its confidence in crypto “while maintaining our position as the most trusted brand in the space,” Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch said. “I think that, especially after the FTX collapse, there has been a real need for that across the entire crypto space,” he said.
Demand for tech workers at non-tech companies has reportedly outstripped demand at tech firms. The findings come as tech companies continue to cut budgets and lay off workers by the thousands. Tech jobs, highly sought after for their high pay and cushy benefits, seem less secure than ever as nearly every major tech company has cut headcounts and slashed budgets in the past six months. The bloodbath shows no sign of slowing down: Nearly 95,000 tech workers have been laid off in the first few weeks of 2023, according to layoff tracker layoffs.fyi. A silver lining for tech workers?

Want your tax refund faster? Here’s what to do

The IRS says it typically issues federal refunds within 21 calendar days of accepting your tax return, assuming there are no issues. Tom O’Saben, director of tax content for the National Association of Tax Professionals, said some of his clients have received their refunds in as little as 10 days. “If you filed on paper and are expecting a refund, it could take four weeks or more to process your return,” the IRS notes on its website. This can be an issue if you got married recently and changed your last name but failed to inform the Social Security Administration of your name change. If the IRS finds you still owe tax on that unreported income, you may have to return some or all of your refund, plus interest, and possibly an underpayment penalty.
Ron DeSantis won't be the Republican to give the party's response to President Joe Biden's forthcoming State of the Union Address. The broadcast echoed the media ire former President Donald Trump frequently has on display. "To assassinate someone's character with anonymous sources would have been a total no-no," DeSantis said of past media practice. Like Trump, DeSantis often bemoans his media coverage and excoriates what he calls the "corporate press." Despite raising his tussles with the press, DeSantis insisted non-politicians would be the focus of new libel laws.

For years, income-driven repayment plans for student-loan borrowers were not working as intended. That's why Biden introduced a proposal to reform those plans and make monthly payments cheaper. Angel said they were advised by a customer service representative at a student-loan company to stay in school to defer the loan payments. But after so many years of failures with IDR plans, Chingos said he's concerned not much will change. According to NPR, three student-loan companies weren't tracking the payments borrowers were making under the plan, and low-income borrowers who were making $0 monthly payments were hurt the most.

ISTANBUL, Feb 3 (Reuters) - Turkish annual inflation dipped to 57.68% in January, official data showed on Friday, but was well above forecasts despite a favourable base effect that is expected to carry on until President Tayyip Erdogan seeks re-election in May. Month-on-month, consumer prices rose 6.65%, the Turkish Statistical Institute said, nearly twice a Reuters poll forecast of 3.8%. Annually, consumer price inflation (TRCPIY=ECI) was forecast to be 53.5%. The annual price measure is now easing relative to that run-up, which included an 11% surge from December 2021 to January 2022. Economists expect annual inflation to dip to around 40% by the time of the May elections, which are expected to be tight according to polls.
Alphabet — The tech giant saw its shares drop 1% following the aftermath of its disappointing earnings report. Alphabet's posted earnings per share of $1.05 missed Refinitiv analyst consensus estimates of $1.18 per share. The company posted its largest quarterly revenue decline since 2016 as it fended off a strong dollar, China production issues and a difficult macro picture. Ford – Ford Motor shared shed 6% after fourth-quarter earnings fell short of both Wall Street and its own guidance. The Wall Street firm said the rally is driven by a short squeeze.
But even with these near-term headwinds, analysts remain confident in the long-term thesis for the e-commerce giant and its growth trajectory. The results from Amazon come on the heels of a difficult 2022 that saw the e-commerce bellwether shed roughly half its value and post its slowest year of growth . At the same time, revenue for its Amazon Web Services division fell short of Wall Street's estimates and showed slowing sales growth as business spending dwindles. Moderating growth within the company's cloud unit marked one of the biggest concerns for analysts, but nowhere near a shock. Revenue growth came in at 20% for the quarter, and below the already slow 27.5% growth rate the company experienced in third quarter.
Watching labor data on Black workers in the U.S. can offer helpful clues about the strength – or weakness – of the economy, and even signal economic changes before they show up in the headline print. That's because Black workers are more able to find employment in strong labor markets and can be the first to lose their jobs when the economy weakens. "Black workers are the canary in the coal mine – are you actually hiring people?" "The Black unemployment rate continues to be the highest, indicating that Black workers are facing more challenges, having a more difficult time securing employment," said Valerie Wilson, director of the Economic Policy Institute's program on race, ethnicity and the economy. "We know that for every one percentage-point change in the national unemployment rate, we typically get close to a two percentage-point change in the Black unemployment rate," she said.
I started getting requests from customers to design fabric for them, for everything from handbags to backpacks to children's clothing. The website also gets a cut, but the amount depends on whether the design is for commercial or personal use. Clients would see my designs on these websites, search my name, and come to my website I'd created to show my portfolio. Having an ongoing income from clients buying my existing designs meant I could take a break when I needed to. When I felt better, I could create new artwork to upload to a website to sell more prints.

Analysts aren't giving up on Apple despite the tech giant's near-term headwinds. Sales for the holiday-quarter were also 5% lower over last year, representing the company's first year-over-year decline since 2019. "Despite near-term macro and supply headwinds, the Apple flywheel keeps spinning," said Morgan Stanley's Erik Woodring, who retained his price target and overweight rating. AAPL 5D mountain Apple falls after disappointing earnings But Apple isn't out of the macro woods just yet, according to some analysts. Meta Gets Back to Reality

Meta has said it would devote 80% of its total investment dollars to improving its legacy business. Hindsight is always 20/20 but, looking back, it was all there in not-so-fine print. Facebook-parent Meta Platforms’ surged 18% in after hours trading Wednesday following an earnings report that included a first quarter outlook that was better than feared. It came just one day after social media competitor Snap, Inc. painted an ominous picture of its own near-term business prospects, noting revenue was down about 7% quarter to date year on year.
a hedge fund recruiter said, commenting on the calculus for hedge fund investors. At the end of 2021, the fund's exposure had been evenly split between fixed-income and equities, according to the investor documents. In all, more than 60 portfolio managers departed or were let go in 2022, according to the investor documents and people close to the matter. After the shakeup, ExodusPoint's income stream is now even more reliant on fixed-income trading — and that may not be such a bad thing. "The fixed income piece is doing incredibly well," another hedge fund recruiter said.
SYDNEY, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Australia will replace the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on its A$5 banknote with a new design to reflect and honour the history of its Indigenous culture, the country's central bank said on Thursday. The decision follows consultation with the federal government, which supports the change, the Reserve Bank of Australia said in a statement. The Reserve Bank said it would consult with Indigenous groups in designing the A$5 banknote. The A$5 banknote is the only Australian banknote to carry the image of the Queen. Australian coins are mandated to carry the image of the British monarch and new coins will have the effigy of King Charles.
