Fewer foreign buyers are entering the market than ever, according to a report by the National Association of Realtors. A supply shortage, dollar strength, and difficulties in obtaining financing are among reasons cited for the decline. A supply shortage has had significant knock-on effects for foreign buyers of American homes. Buyers from abroad have declined to the lowest level since records began in 2009, according to a report published by the National Association of Realtors. Per the data, the number of existing homes purchased by foreign buyers from April 2022 to March 2023 fell by 14% to around 84,600.

REUTERS/Henry Nicholls/File PhotoAug 2 (Reuters) - British challenger bank Virgin Money UK (VMUK.L) on Wednesday maintained its full-year outlook and reported stable net interest margin (NIM) in the third quarter despite pressure from its mortgages business. Virgin Money has been restructuring itself as it grapples with a drop in footfall and transaction volumes. Virgin Money said higher interest rates were offset by spread pressure in mortgages and continued deposit migration. The London-listed lender also announced its plans to buyback shares worth 175 million pounds ($159.58 million) in fiscal year 2023 and more in 2024.

In response, Russia has put up boom defenses to protect bridges or ships. But Ukraine can easily overcome those by launching a double-drone strike, an expert told Insider. However, the outdated defenses, which have been around since World War II, will prove useless if Ukraine decides to counter with a double-drone strike, Stephen Wright, a drone technology developer told Insider. The defenses were deployed after Ukraine unveiled a new sea drone that is designed to attack ships in Russia's Black Sea fleet. Wright told Insider that Ukraine can easily counter the boom defenses by launching a formation attack.

REUTERS/Alaa Al SukhniLONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - Britain on Thursday said it had agreed deals with Zambia on clean energy and critical minerals as foreign minister James Cleverly ends a four-day visit to Africa to deepen ties. "The UK-Zambia Green Growth Compact and our landmark agreement on critical minerals will support investment between UK and Zambian business, creating jobs in both countries," Cleverly said. Zambia is a major copper producer, and also has deposits of critical minerals such as cobalt, manganese and nickel. Last year Britain emphasised the importance of diversifying its supply chains in a critical mineral strategy. Britain has agreed to deepen collaboration on critical minerals with other countries such as the United States, Japan, Australia, Kazakhstan and Saudi Arabia.

REUTERS/Hollie Adams/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Britain said on Wednesday it would start work on setting up new rules specially designed to prevent a big insurance company collapse from crashing the financial system. But no such specifically tailored regime currently exists in Britain to deal with failures in the country's insurance industry, which is the fourth largest in the world. The European Union is in the process of approving its own set of rules for handling insurance company failures. In Britain, insurance company collapses currently come under modified UK company insolvency arrangements, which the finance ministry said may be less effective for an industry with 2.7 trillion pounds ($3.45 trillion) in assets. The timing of the new regime is unclear given that legislation is needed and Britain is likely to face national elections next year.

A Florida steakhouse chain is joining the fray by selling a $69 plant-based steak by Chunk Foods. Charley's Steak House is billing itself as the first steakhouse chain in the US to add a plant-based steak to its menu. The plant-based steak is so good that some staffers were fooled during blind taste tests, company Executive Vice President Clark Woodsby told Insider. Last year, Beyond Meat's sales slumped as consumers turned away from plant-based meat substitutes. To date, restaurant diners have experienced plant-based foods at fast-food chains like KFC, Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and Chipotle.

It may have weighed twice as much as a blue whale because of its dense bones. That's nearly as heavy as a Boeing 747 or twice as much as a blue whale, which typically weighs between 72 and 180 tons. That means the other fossils retrieved from the area may not offer clues to how P. colossus lived. A 3D model shows what a complete skeleton of Perucetus colossus would look like, above a blue whale and smaller Cynthiacetus peruvianus skeletons. No limbs were found near the P. colossus skeleton, but fossilized evidence suggests it likely had both front and back legs.

CNN —A colossal ancient whale discovered in Peru might be the heaviest animal on record, according to a new study. What’s more, Perucetus likely weighed two to three times more than the blue whale, which today weighs a maximum of 149.6 metric tons (330,000 pounds). Giovanni Bianucci“Discoveries of such extreme body forms are an opportunity to re-evaluate our understanding of animal evolution,” wrote J.G.M. “It seems that we are only dimly aware of how astonishing whale form and function can be,” they added. Aug 1 (Reuters) - Britain's Domino's Pizza Group (DOM.L) announced a 70 million pound ($89.78 million) share buyback programme on Tuesday and raised its annual profit forecast range helped by higher orders and sales in the first half of the year. Resilient customer spending has helped the UK hospitality slowly recover from pandemic lows amid pressures from high costs. In the first half of the year, total orders increased 2.8% to 35.4 million, helping the company to post an 8.2% rise in underlying core profit. The company, a franchisee of U.S.-based Domino's Pizza Inc (DPZ.N), said it now expects an underlying core profit of about 132 million pounds - 138 million pounds for the year. Analysts on average had expected 127.6 million pounds, according to a company-compiled consensus.

Even by the standards of London’s white-hot real estate market, it was a property with seemingly limited appeal: an unused stairwell, attached to the back of a suburban building, next to a parking garage. Nevertheless, the four-story metal stairwell, enclosed by translucent panels, sold at auction on Tuesday morning for 25,000 pounds (about $32,000), 20 percent more than the starting bid. Simon Squibb, the longtime entrepreneur who bought the stairwell, said he saw what the property listing called its “development potential.”Mr. Squibb recently co-founded HelpBnk, a company that supports budding entrepreneurs, possibly with the help of his new stairwell.

REUTERS/Hannah McKayAug 1 (Reuters) - Metro Bank Holdings (MTRO.L) on Tuesday reported a first-half profit compared with a year-ago loss, helped by the British mid-sized lender keeping a tight rein on costs and benefiting from interest rate hikes. Bank profits have been lifted by successive rate increases by the Bank of England, enabling lenders to make more money on borrowing despite the threat to the economy posed by rampant inflation. The bank posted an underlying pre-tax profit of 16.1 million pounds ($20.65 million) for the six months ended June 30, compared with a loss of 48 million pounds a year earlier. Metro Bank, which was set up more than a decade back to challenge the dominance of mainstream lenders, reported total deposits of 15.53 billion pounds, down from 16.01 billion pounds as on Dec. 31.

Pound's mini-budget dip made UK's Brexit bill dearer

In previous years, the Treasury's "reportable losses" have ranged between zero and a few million pounds. This 855 million-euro payment cost Britain 764 million pounds on a day when 1 pound would buy only 1.12 euros. Back in April 2022, when the EU updated Britain's payment schedule for June through September, it assumed an exchange rate of around 1.18 euros per pound - equating to monthly payments of 719 million pounds rather than 764 million pounds. Still, that small net gain represents a sharp drop from March 2022 when it stood at 91.2 million pounds - with the payment on Sept. 30 a conspicuous loss-maker. Economists put the broader costs of the mini-budget episode - stemming from loss of investor confidence and higher market interest rates - in the billions of pounds.

Right now, at the market, you’ll probably find fresh shelling beans piled high in their pods. While you’re at it, scout the market for ribbonlike Romano beans, also called runner beans or flat beans. Then you’ll need some tender green beans, which can sometimes be a problem. Cooked to perfection, these seasonal treats need only a zesty vinaigrette. For me, the beans are the stars, though for all intents and purposes, this is a vegetable version of salade niçoise.

Aston Martin flips from cash-guzzler to carmaker

LONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Aston Martin Lagonda (AML.L) is making a painful transition from cash-guzzler to viable carmaker. A 216 million pound cash call on Monday brings its total capital raised since 2018 to just under 1.8 billion pounds. By this year, Aston Martin will have grown revenue by 13% per annum since 2019, according to Refinitiv data, thanks to new models like the DB12 and higher prices. Aston’s current enterprise value is just under 2 times forecast 2024 sales, a discount to Porsche, and far below Ferrari’s (RACE.MI) more than 8 times multiple. Yet Aston still needs to show it can make an electric vehicle, with the first due in 2025.

In a statement written from the perspective of a sun bear named “Angela,” officials from Hangzhou zoo said people “didn’t understand” the species. In 2013, a city zoo in the central Henan province angered visitors by trying to pass off a Tibetan Mastiff dog as a lion. Visitors at another Chinese zoo, in Sichuan province, were shocked to discover a golden retriever sitting in a cage labeled as an African lion enclosure. Sun, moon, grizzly, black, spectacled, sloth: Bears all over the world can stand, shuffle, totter and walk on two legs, though they usually prefer four. But a zoo in Hangzhou, China, decided that the best way to clear up a conspiracy theory about one of its bears was to release a statement in the bear’s voice. The confusion appeared to begin in late July, when a video surfaced on the Chinese social media site Weibo of a sun bear named Angela standing on a rock in its zoo enclosure, with ramrod posture on its hind legs. Some Weibo users began to cast doubt on the ursine truth of the bear. Some accused the zoo of using a dog impostor — sun bears can grow to the proportions of a large dog, about four and a half feet long and up to 145 pounds.

Manchester United, whose U.S. owners have been considering selling the Premier League club, will return to the lucrative UEFA Champions League this year after securing a top-four finish in the domestic league last season under manager Erik ten Hag. "The new deal increases the focus on the Manchester United women's team since their reintroduction in 2018," United said in a joint press release with Adidas. The new deal with Adidas, ahead of the 2023/24 Premier League season starting next month, will continue the partnership until June 2035, the northwest England-based club said.
