AMD shares jump as earnings defy collapse seen at Intel
  + stars: | 2023-02-01 | by ( Aditya Soni | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Feb 1 (Reuters) - Shares of Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD.O) rose nearly 7% on Wednesday after the U.S. chipmaker's upbeat earnings showed that it was making up for a personal-computer slump with gains in the lucrative data center market. The data center market has slowed in recent months due to lower spending from recession-wary businesses, but AMD's faster and smaller chips have allowed it to gain ground on Intel. "AMD can continue to beat Intel in the data center space due to its leading design," said Lucas Keh, semiconductors analyst at Third Bridge. J.P. Morgan pegged AMD's share gain in the server market this year at 5 to 7 percentage points to between 28% and 30%. "First quarter should be the bottom for us in PCs and then grow from there into the second quarter and then into the second half," Su said.

Fears of generative AI helping students cheat are rampant, and some school districts are banning it. Instead, educators should think about how generative AI can be used as a classroom learning tool. Insider spoke with multiple AI researchers and academics, startup founders, and education-nonprofit leaders to learn how they're approaching generative AI in the classroom. If used effectively, generative AI tools like ChatGPT can help students develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are crucial learning outcomes for most teachers. That way, students are actively engaged and wouldn't be able to use generative AI to complete a full assignment, he said.

The investigation raises the stakes for Tesla and its claim of self-driving technology. IIHS found that 42% of Tesla Autopilot users were comfortable letting the system drive the vehicle without them watching what was happening on the road.

Hong Kong CNN —ASML, a Dutch maker of semiconductor equipment, says “rules are being finalized” on export controls, amid reports that the Netherlands and Japan have joined the United States in restricting sales of some computer chip machinery to China. Bloomberg reported that the deal “would extend some export controls the US adopted in October” to Dutch and Japanese companies, including ASML (ASML), Nikon (NINOY) and Tokyo Electron. In recent months, the Dutch government has faced pressure from the United States to limit chip-related exports to China, particularly from ASML, according to Xiaomeng Lu, director of geo-technology at the Eurasia Group. It noted that it mainly sold “mature” products to China, and its most advanced lithography technology had already been restricted since 2019. Those machines had been prohibited from being sent to China because the Dutch government had “refused to grant it a license under US pressure,” Lu previously told CNN.

I am deeply aware of the fact that my view of the natural world is colored by my home place. But I don’t think that’s the same as romanticizing nature. Of course the natural world is full of forces that are so-called destructive. The story that we have to illuminate is that we don’t have to be complicit with destruction.
McCarthy to discuss debt limit, spending with Biden

"I want to find a reasonable and a responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling (and) take control of this runaway spending," McCarthy added. A White House spokesperson declined to comment but a White House official familiar with plans for the meeting confirmed the Wednesday timing. Biden previously pledged to discuss debt with McCarthy but the White House has said it will not negotiate over raising the debt ceiling. Biden administration officials have framed the planned meeting with McCarthy as an opportunity to develop the two leaders' "working relationship." McCarthy and other Republicans both in the House and Senate have said they will not support an increase in the debt ceiling without budget cuts or spending reforms.

An ad from Molson Coors announcing that it is teaming up with online sports-betting company DraftKings. Molson Coors Beverage Co. is seizing on the popularity of online sports betting to generate buzz during Super Bowl LVII, as the maker of Coors Light and Miller Lite returns to the big game after a 33-year hiatus. The Chicago-based company had long been kept out of the Super Bowl because rival Anheuser-Busch InBev NV had exclusive rights to be the sole alcohol brand to be featured during the game, which it gave up last year. In anticipation of its return, Molson recently ran print, online and outdoor ads asking consumers which of its two light beers—Miller Lite or Coors Light—deserves the brewer’s coveted Super Bowl spot.
Why Auto Marketing Looks Poised for Growth in 2023

A year like that might typically drive auto marketing off a cliff. “We haven’t taken our foot off the accelerator, because we do see the transformation of EVs occurring,” Mr. Wager said. “You don’t put a vehicle in the Super Bowl to sell 20,000 vehicles—that doesn’t make any sense,” Mr. Wager said. “You wouldn’t put it on television normally, unless you’re creating the halo of the electrification of the brand,” Mr. Wager said. Kia will be at the Super Bowl again this year, this time advertising its Telluride SUV.

Thursday's set of data has raised investor hopes of a soft landing - a scenario in which inflation eases against a backdrop of slowing but resilient economic growth. Futures are pricing a 94.7% probability of a 25-basis-point hike next Wednesday and see the Fed's overnight rate at 4.45% by next December, or lower than the 5.1% rate Fed officials have projected into next year. Data on U.S. personal consumption expenditures (PCE) due at 1330 GMT will provide further clues on inflation. Oil prices rose on expectations of a boost to demand from China's reopening and after the strong U.S. data.
If you've ever been confused by miniature bottles branded as Fireball Cinnamon, the popular cinnamon-flavored drink found in gas stations and supermarkets, you're not alone — and now there's a lawsuit over the matter. Citing two news articles pointing out that the bottles, while displaying the Fireball label, do not actually contain whisky, lawyers representing Chicago plaintiff Anna Marquez are seeking unspecified damages against Fireball-maker the Sazerac Company. In the suit, Marquez and her attorneys say the mini bottles, which advertise "Fireball Cinnamon," falsely give consumers the impression that the drinks are merely smaller versions of regular Fireball whisky. "When viewed together with the Fireball distilled spirit brand name, the label misleads consumers into believing it is or contains distilled spirits," the suit states. A representative for Sazerac said the company does not comment on pending litigation and referred an inquiry to the company's Fireball Cinnamon FAQ page.

Nationwide core inflation in Japan reached 4% in December, the highest annualized print since December 1981, according to data released last week. Yuichi Yamazaki | Afp | Getty ImagesThe Bank of Japan emphasized that it wants to maintain its current monetary policy, including leaving its yield curve control unchanged, according to the Summary of Opinions from its last meeting published Thursday. The "yield curve control" refers to a policy of the Japanese central bank that's designed to keep the 10-year yield on Japanese Government Bonds (JGBs) within 0.5 percentage points of zero. The central bank continued its operations to purchase Japanese government bonds in response to upward pressure on yields. I think a lot will depend on, for instance, the inflation data in the coming months," he told CNBC's "Street Signs Asia."
Retail sales have weakened sharply over the last two months and manufacturing looks to have joined the housing market in recession. While the labor market remains strong, business sentiment continues to sour, which could eventually hurt hiring. According to a Reuters survey of economists, GDP growth likely increased at a 2.6% annualized rate last quarter after accelerating at a 3.2% pace in the third quarter. Trade, which accounted for the bulk of GDP growth in the third quarter, was seen either making a small contribution or subtracting from GDP growth. While the labor market thus far has shown remarkable resilience, economists argue that deteriorating business conditions will force companies to slow hiring and lay off workers.

After the 9/11 disaster, the NYSE was obligated to maintain a primary trading site (at the NYSE) and a back-up site (which is in Chicago). On Monday evening, routine maintenance was being performed on the software for the Chicago back-up site. On Tuesday morning, the back-up system (Chicago) was mistakenly still running when the primary system (NYSE) came online. Because the back-up was still running, when the primary site started up some stocks behaved as if trading had already started. This caused significant price dislocations and trading halts.
Inflation is beginning to moderate in developed markets, but potential data surprises remain a risk to investors. Goldman Sachs suggests three areas that investors can watch in order to help predict these inflation surprises. Commodity prices, currency movements, and regional inflation figures are key areas to look for future surprises. But, according to Goldman Sachs, surprises still abound and can shock markets if too much bullishness is priced in. "The significant slowdown in global headline and core inflation that we anticipate in 2023 will likely eventually lower market sensitivity to inflation surprises," Goldman analysts wrote.
