WASHINGTON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - U.S. auto safety regulators said Tuesday they have opened an investigation into 280,000 new Tesla (TSLA.O) Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over reports of loss of steering control and power steering. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a preliminary evaluation after it received 12 complaints from owners of 2023 Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. One Model 3 driver reported in May the "car steering felt stuck and slid off the road which resulted in crashing into a tree." A driver in Alpharetta, Georgia in June reported that a two-week-old Tesla Model Y was coming out of a shopping center when "suddenly steering wheel did not steer. The driver said it "currently remains at Tesla for the next 3 weeks while we await a new steering rack/motor."

Sheila Y. Oliver, New Jersey’s lieutenant governor and the first Black woman to hold statewide elected office there, died on Tuesday after being rushed to the hospital the day before. Ms. Oliver, a Democrat and longtime resident of East Orange, N.J., was elected lieutenant governor in 2017 as Gov. In 2010, she became the first Black woman to lead the predominantly male State Assembly. Ms. Oliver had been serving as acting governor of New Jersey since Mr. Murphy and his family left over the weekend for a vacation in Italy, where they own a home. Mr. Murphy will return to New Jersey within the next few days, a spokesman said.

Kathleen Goforth said she took her Tesla Model Y on a 9-day road trip through a rural area and had to get creative at one point when it came to charging. "There are no services within or anywhere near the Monument – no food, water, gas stations, and, certainly, no EV charging stations. Earlier this year, another Tesla owner said he faced some "hiccups" on a 6,392-mile road trip but that he ultimately found the carmaker's Autopilot driver assist feature to be a "lifesaver." A Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV owner previously told Insider that successful EV road trips needed to be properly plotted out.
