CNN —A Texas appeals court upheld two injunctions in a pair of legal cases Friday, in an order blocking the state’s Department of Family and Protective Services from investigating families of transgender youth who are seeking gender-affirming medical care for their children. The court of appeals upheld a trial court decision in the Friday order, ruling in favor of LGBTQ+ advocates and families in two related Texas lawsuits asking a state court to block the agency from investigating parents who provide their children with gender-affirming care. Paxton appealed the district court injunction in March and declared investigations could continue during the appeal process under the law. The court, in its opinion, also affirmed Paxton’s opinion does not alter preexisting law or legal obligations of the department. Abbott’s directive to the agency was seen by many as an attack on transgender children and their families.

Washington, DC CNN —Mortgage rates dropped for the second week in a row, falling nearly a quarter of a percentage point over the past two weeks in the face of stronger-than-expected employment and inflation data. The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.74% in the week ending March 14, down from 6.88% the previous week, according to data from Freddie Mac released Thursday. But while rates are expected to move around in the next few months, homebuyers shouldn’t expect a major drop. “In this environment, there is a good possibility that rates will stay higher for a longer period of time.”Over the past four months, mortgage rates have come down from their highest levels of last year: 7.79%. Applications for mortgages were up 7% in the week ending March 8 from the week before, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Artists too rarely leave clear instructions on what to do with their works, especially unfinished ones, which can lead to messy legal battles. The heirs inherit the responsibility to preserve and promote the artist’s legacy so that it can be appreciated for generations to come. The truth is that if García Márquez’s sons had done as their father asked, they would most likely have been met with criticism, too.

George Collier, a 20-year-old music transcriber, is doing his part to change that. While Collier specializes in jazz, he also showcases performances from the classical world, as well as everyday people with impressive talents. As of Monday, March 4, 2024, Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution is essentially a dead letter, at least as it applies to candidates for federal office. In the aftermath of the oral argument last month, legal observers knew with near-certainty that the Supreme Court was unlikely to apply Section 3 to Trump. None of the justices seemed willing to uphold the Colorado court’s ruling, and only Justice Sonia Sotomayor gave any meaningful indication that she might dissent. Or the court could have held that Trump, as president, was not an “officer of the United States” within the meaning of the section. It’s worth noting that, by not taking this path, the court did not exonerate Trump from participating in an insurrection.
