Schreiber, who aspired to a literary career and at one time was romantically involved with the playwright Eugene O’Neill’s oldest son, wrote celebrity profiles and pop psychology pieces for outlets such as Cosmopolitan. And Wilbur, who had treated the actor Roddy McDowall — Case 129 in a book she co-authored about the causes and “treatment” of male homosexuality — craved the kind of broad audience that magazines then attracted. Rather than telekinetic powers, she develops a preternatural ability to assume different personas. Wilbur by any modern metric crossed the line from transference to enmeshment. She crept into her patient’s bed to administer electroshock treatment with an outdated device, doled out Pentothal (a barbiturate then wrongly thought to act as a truth serum) to the point of addiction, and took her on creepy road trips.

Read Your Way Through Los Angeles

Read Your Way Around the World is a series exploring the globe through books. Outsiders often think of Los Angeles as an anti-intellectual place, all Hollywood glitz and no substance, but writers have always been drawn to my hometown. In David L. Ulin’s “Writing Los Angeles: A Literary Anthology,” I read about Simone de Beauvoir’s 1947 journey to L.A.’s Eastside, where she learned about the city’s anti-Mexican prejudice and admired Dia de los Muertos skulls. It’s no accident that two very different, canonical works of L.A. literature climax with riots, even though they were written more than a half century apart: Nathanael West’s 1939 novel “The Day of the Locust,” and Anna Deavere Smith’s play “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992.”Is there a book, or a writer, who captures the essence of Los Angeles? With her iconic 1960s and ‘70s essays about Los Angeles and the West, in collections such as “Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” Didion helped invent New Journalism.

WASHINGTON — My brothers Michael and Martin attended baseball’s opening day at the old Griffith Stadium in April 1951, with the Senators (as our team was then called) playing the Yankees. When the boys got home, Martin confessed to our father that he had stood up to boo the president before Michael pulled him down. “Dad told me that President Truman was a great man,” Martin later recalled. “He said that if Truman fired MacArthur, he must have his reasons and that I should never boo another president. And to a large degree, we have Donald Trump and Rupert Murdoch to thank for that.
When Mayor Eric Adams began to talk frequently about God a few months back — how God elevated him to lead New York City, how Mr. Adams implemented policy with a “godlike” approach, how the separation of church and state was misguided — his timing was no accident. He was, he says, responding to the same divine voice he heard decades ago, the one that he says prophesied that he would become mayor on Jan. 1, 2022. “The same voice I heard 32 years ago spoke to me a few months ago and said, ‘Talk about God, Eric,’” Mr. Adams said on Thursday at the Christian Cultural Center, a Brooklyn megachurch that has become a favored political pulpit for many. “‘Talk about God.’”Mr. Adams made his comments on the National Day of Prayer, a day of observance created by President Harry S. Truman, a Democrat, in 1952. But few New York City mayors have chosen to formally commemorate the day or to speak so fervently about religion — especially not in the way Mr. Adams has.

Scranton to Biden: Love ya, Joe. But a 2024 run?

[1/6] A photograph of Jim Connors, 76, former Mayor of Scranton, with U.S. President Joe Biden hangs in his home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S., March 10, 2023. Despite those strong ties, interviews with about two dozen Scranton voters show many harbor deep concerns about Biden running again. Many Scranton residents say they might back Biden again in 2024, albeit without much enthusiasm. Biden is also supporting a plan to build a new rail line from Scranton to New York City. “So, when I think about President Biden, I don't just think about President Biden being our hometown son," Cognetti said.
[1/2] Actor Robert Blake speaks to reporters as he walks to Burbank Courthouse in Burbank, California, U.S. August 29, 2005. A wrongful death lawsuit subsequently filed against Blake by her estate led to a civil court judgment that the actor was responsible for her slaying. Blake contended his wife was a victim of her own checkered past, gunned down by an unknown assailant. Blake's acting work was overshadowed four years later by the Bakley murder, which remains unsolved. A paternity test showed that the father was Blake, not Christian Brando, son of actor Marlon Brando, who Bakley had been dating simultaneously.
That, however, is considerably more overlap than between the protagonists featured in H.W. Brands’s latest book, “The Last Campaign: Sherman, Geronimo and the War for America.” Despite their twin billing, the general and the Apache leader do not cross paths in the book, and apparently never met. Moreover, while “Heat” remains original and taut (despite its nearly three-hour runtime), “The Last Campaign” is predictable and baggy, following an established path now beaten to dust by generations of professional and popular historians. At first blush, author and subject seem well matched. Mr. Brands is a talented storyteller, with a novelist’s feel for pacing and detail.

WASHINGTON, Dec 23 (Reuters) - U.S President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit the Children's National Hospital in Washington on Friday to meet with pediatric patients, their families and hospital staff, the White House said. First ladies traditionally visit the hospital around the Christmas holiday, dating back to first lady Bess Truman during the post-second world war presidency of Harry Truman. Last year, President Biden made the trip, marking the first time a sitting president made a holiday visit to Children’s National. The president and the first lady will host a book reading of "The Snowy Day" with a group of pediatric patients, including some who participate virtually from their hospital room. The couple will also visit children and families in the cardiac unit, the White House said.

Gary Oldman has been starring in films for the past 40 years, but he doesn't anticipate working for too much longer. CNN —Despite numerous calls from astronomers to rename its powerful new telescope, NASA officials stood by the naming of the James Webb Space Telescope before its launch. With the telescope nearly a year into its stint in space, the agency has released its chief historian’s investigation into the namesake of the telescope. Earlier this summer, Dr. Jane Rigby, the operations project scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, tweeted that “a transformative telescope should have a name that stands for discovery and inclusion.”Officials at NASA have refused to rename it, though, citing an investigation into Webb’s career. The James Webb Space Telescope is the most powerful telescope ever built. NASA Goddard Space Flight CenterNo evidence links Webb to any action that followed those discussions, Odom said.

Throughout the war in Ukraine, US destroyers have continued "operating with allies and partners in the high north to put pressure on Russia, to make sure that they know that we're there with capable platforms," Gilday added. The British Royal Navy followed suit this spring, sending HMS Prince of Wales into the Arctic for seven weeks — the first Arctic deployment for the UK's new Queen Elizabeth-class carriers. By sending the carrier that far north, the Royal Navy sought "to push the boundaries of UK carrier operations in the cold, harsh environment," the ship's commanding officer said. British Royal NavyHMS Prince of Wales' deployment reflects the British navy's increasing investment in Arctic operations. In 2020, the British navy "recommenced" routine operations in the Arctic, according to the UK's updated Arctic strategy, released in March.
How does the president's party fare in the midterms?
  + stars: | 2022-11-07 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
The last five presidents have been elected with party control of the House and Senate, and four of them lost that control in the following midterm. Tallied up, 13 of the last 19 midterms saw losses in both chambers for the party in power. When looking at only the Senate midterms, the president’s party again shows consistent loss in recent decades. But the party in power gains and loses Senate seats like the House does, especially between presidential elections. Green arrows show gains for the president’s party while yellow arrows show losses.
