But a comment on an online science forum called PubPeer convinced me something might be at the bottom of this one. That anonymous 2015 observation helped spark a chain of events that led Stanford’s president, Marc Tessier-Lavigne, to announce his resignation this month. Stanford opened the investigation in response to reporting I published last autumn in The Stanford Daily, taking a closer look at scientific papers he published from 1999 to 2012. (My team of editors, advisers and lawyers at The Stanford Daily stand by our work.) In retrospect, much of the data manipulation is obvious.

Mr. Baker, 18, resurfaced claims in a Nov. 29 article for The Stanford Daily that neuroscience research papers in which Dr. Tessier-Lavigne was listed either as principal author or co-author had altered imagery. The claims had been repeated over the years on PubPeer, a website that allows scientists to discuss research. The next day, Stanford University opened an investigation into Dr. Tessier-Lavigne with a panel of outside scientists. Dr. Tessier-Lavigne denied those claims. “That allegation appears to be mistaken, as Genentech has stated,” the panel’s report said, though it noted “multiple problems” with the 2009 study.

At the moment, it goes against the grain to bet against A.I. The big tech companies, wagering billions on the new technologies and largely undaunted by their shortcomings or risks, seem intent on forging ahead as fast as they can. While Wikipedia’s licensing policy lets anyone tap its knowledge and text — to “reuse and remix” it however they might like — it does have several conditions. Mixing Wikipedia’s corpus into a chatbot model that gives answers to queries without explaining the sourcing may thus violate Wikipedia’s terms of use, two people in the open-source software community told me. In April, Reddit announced that it would not make its corpus available for scraping by big tech companies without compensation.

Years before France was inflamed with anger at the police killing of a teenager during a traffic stop, there was the notorious Théo Luhaka case. Mr. Luhaka was wrestled to the ground by three police officers, who hit him repeatedly and sprayed tear gas in his face. When it was over, he was bleeding from a four inch tear in his rectum, caused by one of the officers’ expandable batons. Mr. Luhaka’s housing project, and others around Paris, erupted in fury. He was held up as a symbol of what activists had been denouncing for years: discriminatory policing that violently targets minority youth, particularly in France’s poor areas.

CNN —Dragons and zombies and Jedi, oh my. HBO’s gaudy show of force – with half the best-drama nominees and 127 bids overall, the highest total of any individual network or service – featured a combination of both. Fabio Lovino/HBOWhen those nominees need to begin rehearsing their acceptance speeches is itself a source of mystery as of now. Gallium prices in China have dropped 12% this year, pressured by its slowing economy. China's germanium ingot price has advanced only 1% to 7,250 yuan per kg since Monday. Overseas price offers are rising much faster, amid fears that Beijing may use the permitting system to restrict shipments. The Chinese government enforces export controls that do not target any particular country," spokesperson Shu Jueting told a weekly press conference. China produces around 60% of the world's germanium, and over 90% of the world's gallium.

Walter Isaacson said Elon Musk could be "brutal" and would go into "demon mode" at times. She told him that while it can be "unpleasant" to be around Musk when he's in demon mode, it's also the mode that "gets shit done." Isaacson said he attributed Musk's "dark streak" and his willingness to take risks to his relationship with his father, Errol Musk. Errol Musk denied he contributed to Musk's "dark streak" in an emailed statement to Insider, saying that "these days Elon and I are on fairly good terms." Tesla cofounder Martin Eberhard previously told Insider that Musk used to scream at him over press coverage on Tesla.

While Hollywood deals with the first TV and movie writers’ strike in 15 years, the wealth of content that we have available to us is a good reminder of the creativity those writers have put into making the shows and movies we love. Something to sip on…Corey Mylchreest as Young King George, India Amarteifio as Young Queen Charlotte in episode 101 of "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." Liam Daniel/NetflixOne of the reasons the strike is even happening is because streaming has changed the entertainment industry so much that writers say their wages are being adversely affected through shorter seasons and changing distribution models. Those individuals can’t work – and some of our favorite shows will be delayed – unless writers and studios reach a new agreement soon. In the meantime, catch up on some brilliant shows you’ve missed.
The rainfall in Kalehe territory in South Kivu province caused rivers to overflow on Thursday, inundating the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi. South Kivu governor Théo Ngwabidje Kasi put the death toll at 176 and said that others were still missing. Floods and landslides are not uncommon in South Kivu, which shares a border with Rwanda. Heavy rains also triggered flooding and landslides in Rwanda this week, killing 130 people and destroying more than 5,000 homes. The last incident of a similar scale in Congo occurred in October 2014, when heavy rainfall destroyed over 700 homes.
Dubai to build world's first 3D-printed mosque

CNN —In recent years, 3D-printing has been used to build everything from homes to businesses and even bridges. Now, Dubai is set to construct the world’s first 3D-printed mosque. A rendering of the 3D-printed mosque, which will be built in Bur Dubai. By 2019 it held the world record for the largest 3D-printed structure – the Dubai Municipality building (standing 9.5 meters tall with an area of 640 square meters) – as well as being home to the world’s first 3D-printed office, and a 3D-printed drone research laboratory. He believes that a project like Dubai’s proposed mosque is the next phase in 3D-printed architectural design, but anticipates it will face challenges.
People have found a way to get their Twitter blue checks back for free — though it's just a temporary fix. Legacy verified Twitter users have found a temporary fix to get their blue tick back for free — just by adding in a few words to their bio. Cheryl Teh, a news editor from Insider — who lost her blue tick when Twitter CEO Elon Musk axed the legacy blue tick program on April 1 — confirmed that writing "former blue check" in her bio restored the blue tick. But Musk replaced it with a subscription-based service, where legacy verified users could keep their checkmarks by signing up for the Twitter Blue subscription program. The posthumously installed blue tick beside these celebrities' names on Twitter erroneously claims: "This account is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number."
