WASHINGTON — Michael Cohen is an unlikely civil rights warrior. Where Cohen, now a voluble Trump critic, aligns with civil rights advocates is on trying to turn the tide on the Supreme Court’s hostility to claims against federal officials for constitutional violations. Cohen also faces an unlikely alliance opposing his request: Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The current president’s Justice Department has filed a brief agreeing with the former president that the Supreme Court should not get involved. In Trump’s brief, his lawyer Alina Habba wrote that lower courts “faithfully applied” Supreme Court precedent in ruling against Cohen.

CNN —Donald Trump is invoking a vision of an extreme new White House term that would transform America and rock the world. It’s the latest example of Harris’ campaign drawing sharper distinctions with Trump in the presidential race’s closing weeks, using the former president’s own words and those of his former aides to cast him as dangerous and unstable. In Erie on Monday, Harris will highlight Trump’s comments Sunday on Fox News, when he said he isn’t worried about his supporters’ actions on Election Day. Harris on Monday plans to warn that Trump’s actions could put people’s freedom at risk. Harris’ campaign will also release a new ad, dubbed “Enemy Within,” which features Trump repeatedly invoking the phrase “the enemy from within” on the campaign trail. “The enemy within are people that Kamala Harris let into this country, unvetted, unchecked and undocumented.”During her event Monday, Harris also plans to show attendees in Erie what Trump rallies are like, the aide said.

Former President Donald Trump’s campaign also faced renewed focus on his legal troubles in the wake of a new filing by federal prosecutors, the survey finds. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, which has killed more than 230 people across the southeastern United States, “hurricane” was the word most frequently mentioned when respondents were asked what they’d heard about Trump. Democrats and Republicans were about equally likely to mention the hurricane when talking about Harris – although their perspectives on her response often differed sharply. Republicans were far likelier than Democrats to mention the hurricane in conjunction with Trump. Georgetown University, University of Michigan and s3mc.orgThe sentiment behind the words Americans used to describe what they’d heard about Harris remained modestly more positive than the words they used to describe the news about Trump.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump suggested using the military to handle what he called “the enemy from within” on Election Day, saying that he isn’t worried about chaos from his supporters or foreign actors, but instead from “radical left lunatics.”“I think the bigger problem are the people from within. “No, I don’t think — not from the side that votes for Trump,” the former president said when Bartiromo asked whether he was expecting chaos on Election Day. Trump has also been laying groundwork to question the integrity of the 2024 election. He’s threatened, if he wins the White House again, prosecution and “long-term prison sentences” for election officials and political operatives, who he suggested could cheat. And he has routinely suggested he would weaponize the justice system to go after his political opponents if voters return him to the White House.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump called Vice President Kamala Harris “retarded” while attempting to convince top Republican donors to pour more money in his campaign, The New York Times reported Saturday. According to the Times, the former president’s offensive remark came during a dinner with donors at his penthouse apartment last month. Sources told the Times that Trump was frustrated with fundraising numbers as Harris continues to bring in more cash than his campaign. “If money guaranteed electoral success, Hillary Clinton would have been president,” Trump’s campaign said Saturday in a statement to CNN. “President Trump is in a better financial position than ever before, and he’s leading in the polls,” campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt added.

— In their first and only debate of an unusually competitive Maryland Senate race Thursday, Prince George's County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and former Gov. Larry Hogan sparred over the issue of abortion and whether the deep blue state would be best represented by a staunch Democrat or an anti-Donald Trump Republican. Hogan distanced himself from the former president and current GOP presidential nominee, framing himself as someone willing to put "country over party." Alsobrooks dismissed that frame, arguing that a vote for Hogan would mean a vote for a Senate Republican majority that would threaten abortion rights and support for Ukraine. Hogan criticized Alsobrooks and "both sides" of the aisle for "trying to change the rules so they can pack the court."

Attorneys for Donald Trump on Thursday argued against the release of additional evidence in the former president's federal election interference case in the lead up to Election Day. A spokesperson for the special counsel’s office declined to comment on the filing. Prosecutors from Smith's office had previously rebuffed assertions from Trump's attorneys that the government was "motivated by improper political considerations." The federal election case was upended after the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling which found that Trump has some protection from prosecution related to official acts. A judge overseeing that case last month granted the former president's request to further postpone his sentencing hearing until after Election Day.

As myths about Milton and Helene spread, interest in chemtrails increased too on Google search and social media. Despite the lack of evidence to support it, the so-called chemtrail conspiracy theory has endured for decades. Some of the promotion of the conspiracy theory has taken on a distinctively antisemitic tone. Peters previously promoted the unhinged conspiracy theory that ballots were flown from Asia as part of a plot to steal the 2020 election from President Trump. Friedrich suggested the conspiracy theories blaming weather manipulation for the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton is a way to distract from the real effects of climate change.
