According to those involved in the report's production, warmer working environments can create some very challenging scenarios indeed. Issues relating to productivity also apply to equipment, facilities and buildings, Fox said. "The economic losses due to heat stress at work were estimated at US$280 billion in 1995," the U.N. agency said. "This clothing can be quite cumbersome … and quite hot to wear, even under cold conditions," Fox said. Fox noted that buildings of this type haven't particularly been designed with heat ingress — especially extreme heat ingress — in mind.

CNN —Carved through and framed by the mighty River Danube, Budapest and its beautiful skyline make it one of Europe’s finest and most compelling cities. The Ruin Bar District has seen its success spread too, with other bars appearing in ruined buildings across the city. CNNIt’s a sobering fact that, just 35 years ago, Budapest had a much different feel compared with its current vibrant air. That’s not to say, however, that the country, and Budapest in particular, does not have a strong independent streak. If Bakancsos Piac is imbued with the spirit of Budapest, then so too is the game of button football.

Liu writes that being a full-time working mother is hard and no one can do it without support. that being a full-time working mother is hard and no one can do it without support. The truth is, being a full-time working mother outside the home, especially to young children, is hard. Realistically, most mothers work out of necessity, and they are the norm, even as they are judged negatively for making that choice. Nevertheless, the motherhood penalty is real, and it is felt by so many working mothers who silently struggle to keep all the plates spinning, hoping that none of them tip over.

Jason McDonald discovered glassblowing more than two decades ago at an after school program in his hometown, Tacoma, Wash. The practice of fusing liquid sand into art objects dates back more than 2000 years, and yet there’s little to no record of Black glass blowers. “I can count on my fingers and toes the number of professional Black glass artists that I know, and still have some toes leftover,” Mr. McDonald said. He has been told by a peer that “you don’t belong here,” and tolerated emotionally abusive artists. But Mr. McDonald’s sense of purpose and drive toward his craft, and for his community, remain urgent.

The tragedy sparked more awareness and positive change in corporate America, according to a new survey of Black executives conducted by CNBC, but the results from the survey show that there remains much work to be done. The survey, conducted by CNBC in partnership with the Executive Leadership Council, found 74% of Black executives saying they saw a positive change in hiring, retention and promotion of Black employees since Floyd was killed in May 2020. As many Black executives say organizational treatment of Black employees has remained the same (43%) or worsened (9%) since 2020, as those who say it has improved (48%). And exactly half say there are still less opportunities for Black employees than other employees at their organizations. More Black executives said that prior to 2020 their firms were "checking the DEI box" rather than taking a comprehensive approach.

The research sought to answer several questions about paternal participation in breastfeeding and the use of safe sleep practices for babies. And many could do more to support mothers who breastfeed, which can provide key health benefits for babies, the study indicated. The research also found racial disparities in sleep practices, with Black fathers less likely than White fathers to follow those practices. Overall, almost a third of the fathers involved in this survey did not receive enough or any advice about safe sleep practices, according to the study. Previous studies have suggested that fathers can play a key role in helping mothers breastfeed.

It would also foreshadow a disturbing trend that has only worsened in subsequent years: 11 o’clock on Sunday morning is now one of the most dangerous hours of the week in America, pastors and church security officials say. Brady Boyd, senior pastor of New Life Church, the same church where Assam confronted a gunman 16 years ago. And in 2018, a gunman killed 11 worshippers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. Civil society cannot exist when the rule of law fails, and that includes on the nation’s streets and public transit systems. That’s why it’s important to pay attention to the tragedy of Jordan Neely and to the man who killed him with a chokehold on the New York City subway on May 1, Daniel Penny. Behind every statistic is an individual case, and it’s not hard to see how the law failed Neely. He was on a Top 50 list maintained by the city of homeless people in need of urgent assistance. Most notably, in November 2021, Neely punched and seriously injured a 67-year-old woman as she exited the subway.
While the communique made no mention of the U.S. debt ceiling stalemate, it figured constantly in discussions. "We need to remain vigilant and stay agile and flexible in our macroeconomic policy amid heightened uncertainty about the global economic outlook," they added in the communique after the meeting. G7 central bank chiefs vowed to combat "elevated" inflation and ensure expectations on future price moves remained well-anchored, a sign many of them will not let their guard down against stubbornly high inflation. CHINA AND SUPPLY CHAINSSeeking to reassure investors after recent U.S. bank failures, the G7 finance chiefs retained an April assessment that the global financial system was "resilient". In the communique, the finance leaders set a year-end deadline for launching a new scheme to diversify global supply chains.

Qualcomm amplifies chip gloom with 'sobering report'
  + stars: | 2023-05-04 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
May 4 (Reuters) - Qualcomm Inc's (QCOM.O) shares sank nearly 8% premarket on Thursday after the chip designer signalled it would take longer for its crucial smartphone market to rebound from a post-pandemic slump. Qualcomm's quarterly revenue outlook was the second time a chip firm has underwhelmed Wall Street this week. "While we believe investors were expecting a miss, this was admittedly a somewhat sobering report," said Bernstein analysts, among the 13 brokerages that cut price targets on Qualcomm's stock. Qualcomm did not name the modem customer, but analysts pointed to Apple, which will report results after markets close. Automotive revenue jumped 20% and the internet-of-things unit reported in line sales, indicating that Qualcomm's efforts to diversify away from the smartphone market were on track.

This year, the event was held in Florence, Italy. Three years after the coronavirus outbreak, the gathering was a chance for arts professionals, collectors, curators and artists to take stock and to ask: Can the arts help meet the challenges that the world faces today?

Russia's ground forces are bigger than they were when they first invaded Ukraine, a top US general said. "Much of the Russian military has not been affected negatively by this conflict," said Gen. Christopher Cavoli. He continued: "The Air Force has lost very little, they've lost 80 planes — they have another 1,000 fighters and fighter-bombers. Earlier in the hearing, Cavoli noted that "much of the Russian military has not been affected negatively by this conflict." Russia has also continued to combine this military power with cyber attacks and manipulation of the global energy supply, Cavoli said.
HONG KONG, April 17 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Hong Kong could use a shot of something. Yet compared to the $313 billion Shanghai-listed behemoth Kweichow Moutai (600519.SS), debutante ZJLD is a drop in the near-$100 billion baijiu industry: it logs less than 1% market share. At the top of the marketed price range, ZJLD could be worth $5.4 billion, or almost 24 times this year's forecast earnings, IFR reports. Revenue at the company, which will be the first baijiu distiller to list in Hong Kong, was up a healthy 15% last year, while its adjusted net profit margin topped 20%. For Hong Kong, consumer stocks will put the focus back onto classic risks.

The South Korean government wants to increase the workweek to 69 hours. In 2020, 14 delivery couriers in South Korea died of overwork stemming from increased deliveries during the COVID-19 pandemic, Reuters reported, citing a union representative.
