The call was the first time in years that the two regional military commanders have engaged in a formal conversation. Citing multiple recent “unsafe interactions” between China’s People’s Liberation Army and U.S. allies, Paparo said the Chinese military had an obligation “to comply with international laws and norms to ensure operational safety,” the readout said. Paparo also urged the Chinese military to reconsider what he said was its use of “dangerous, coercive and potentially escalatory tactics in the South China Sea and beyond,” it added. Both countries announced plans for a call between their military theater commanders after a visit to Beijing late last month by Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser. A phone call raises the possibility of another in-person meeting between the two leaders before the end of Biden’s term.

Hong Kong CNN —American and Chinese military commanders spoke in a long-anticipated call Tuesday as the two powers seek to manage their intensifying rivalry in a contentious Asia-Pacific region – and repair lines of military communication severed more than two years ago. Analysts have long warned that a miscalculation in the South China Sea could quickly spiral into a damaging regional conflict between the world’s two largest economies and that a lack of communication could compound those risks. Tuesday’s call marks a rare point of contact between top military officials leading American troops in the Indo-Pacific and Chinese strategy in the Southern and Eastern theater respectively. It comes within a broader, gradual resumption of high-level military communication following a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November. Top US and Chinese generals spoke in December after more than a year of silence, and US and Chinese defense chiefs held rare talks on the sidelines of a defense gathering in Singapore in May.

It followed tens of thousands of complaints from Care.com customers, including many who thought they canceled memberships but were billed again. The FTC said Care.com enticed customers to buy auto-renewing memberships by overstating the number of jobs, or "gigs," on its platform and how much people could earn from them. It said Care.com knew or should have known a significant number of the jobs were unlikely to result in employment. About 2.9 million U.S. consumers bought Care.com auto-renewing memberships between January 2019 and March 2022. "Care.com used inflated job numbers and baseless earnings claims to lure caregivers onto its platform, and used deceptive design practices to trap consumers in subscriptions," FTC consumer protection chief Samuel Levine said.

When the media executive Edgar Bronfman Jr. submitted his last-ditch bid on Monday to take control of Paramount, his approach was greeted with surprise and skepticism. Who would take his unconventional coalition of investors seriously, especially when an $8 billion deal with Skydance was on the table? The bid has transformed Paramount’s sale into a battle of family dynasties. But the deal is now threatened by the bid from Bronfman — a grandson of the Seagram mogul Samuel Bronfman — whose early foray steering the family business into media several decades ago has left a cloud over his career. The son of one billionaire is now pitted against the son of another.

There are no vaccines for mpox available in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicenter of a global health emergency declared last week, even though the country first asked for the shots two years ago and the manufacturers say they have supplies. “The most important thing we need right now are the vaccines,” said Dr. Samuel-Roger Kamba, health minister of Congo. They are trapped in a byzantine drug regulatory process at the World Health Organization. Three years after the last worldwide mpox outbreak, the W.H.O. still has neither officially approved the vaccines — although the United States and Europe have — nor has it issued an emergency use license that would speed access.

CNN —The New York Liberty solidified their spot at the top of the WNBA standings with a 79-71 home win over the Dallas Wings at the Barclays Center on Thursday. The result made it eight victories in a row for the Liberty, who currently sit atop the Eastern Conference with a league-best 25-4 record, the team’s best start through 29 games in franchise history. The Liberty only shot 35.1% from the field as a team but still had four players score in double figures. It was a morale boosting win for New York, which became the first team to clinch a postseason berth on Saturday. The channel said drones are in "great demand" among sailors and can "effectively combat" naval drones. A more cost-effective solution for Russia to defeat Ukrainian drones could be to use its own drones. Russia can use the FPV drones for a range of missions, including intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance purposes, in addition to threat elimination. CNN —The Dallas Cowboys have become the first professional sports team to be valued at over $10 billion, according to Sportico’s 2024 NFL rankings that were released on Tuesday. The Cowboys, owned by Jerry Jones, were valued at $10.32 billion, far and away the most valuable franchise in the league and an increase of over a billion dollars on the previous estimate of $9.2 billion in February. The Cowboys remain immensely popular though, generating an estimated revenue of $1.2 billion in 2023, 50% higher than the second ranked NFL team, the Los Angeles Rams, according to Sportico. The Rams are valued at $7.79 billion and leapfrogged the New York Giants to take second place but are not in the same stratosphere as Dallas. Per Sportico’s research, the average NFL franchise is worth $5.93 billion, an improvement of 15.4% over last year, as the league continues to be the world’s most financially successful in any sport in terms of team value.

Musk could "sacrifice some of the short-term interest in Tesla," Ward added, "if it'll satisfy the long-term interests of his ambitions." Musk and Tesla didn't respond to requests from Reuters for comment. The growing bond between Trump and Musk could be on display Monday night, when the Tesla boss is scheduled to interview the Republican candidate on X, Musk's social media platform. It's unclear exactly what ambitions Musk could seek to advance through his increasingly vocal rejection of progressive platforms – from EV subsidies to identity politics. A Reuters review of Congressional lobbying records – and Tesla's public comments to federal and state regulators – shows that the company has continued working to shape public policy in favor of such benefits.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday declined to intervene in a long-shot lawsuit brought by Missouri attempting to block legal proceedings in former President Donald Trump's hush money case in New York. Brandon Bell / Getty ImagesNew York Judge Juan Merchan issued an initial gag order in March ahead of Trump’s trial. Bailey took the rare step of trying to sue the state of New York before the Supreme Court, which has jurisdiction over disputes between states. It would have been highly unusual for the Supreme Court to allow a state to interfere with judicial proceedings in another state. Before the trial, Trump was fined for violating the original gag order, especially as it related to Cohen, one of the key witnesses.

For some, the pressure and expectations might forge diamonds – and Paris 2024 has no shortage of this type of athlete. Lithuanian discus thrower Mykolas Alekna is poised to carry on the legacy of his father, Virgilijus, who holds an Olympic record in the same discipline. His 69.89-meter throw in Athens 2004 guaranteed the then-32-year-old a second Olympic gold medal, having also won in Sydney 2000. It was a record the elder Alekna was chasing his entire career and got close only once: a personal record of 73.88 meters thrown just before the Sydney Games. “If you don’t change anything, you’ll be just like your father: without the world record,” Virgilijus said to Lithuanian news outlet Lrytas when asked what he said to his son a month prior to his record-breaking effort.

If you’re in the majority, you don’t need judges and juries to hear you and protect your rights. Last month, Biden traveled to Texas, where he announced a set of proposed Supreme Court reforms that would impose mandatory ethics rules for the court and term limits on justices.
