A space capsule carrying NASA’s first asteroid samples streaked toward a touchdown in the Utah desert Sunday to cap a seven-year journey. Flying by Earth, the Osiris-Rex spacecraft released the capsule from 63,000 miles (100,000 kilometers) out. About a teaspoon was returned by Japan, the only other country to bring back asteroid samples. By the time it returned Sunday, the spacecraft had traveled 4 billion miles (6.2 billion kilometers). NICKELS & STEAMROLLEREstimating the size of hedge funds' basis trade bets is difficult because transparency and visibility around hedge funds is so low at the best of times, especially with regard to their more complex activities and strategies. Many analysts look at leveraged funds' position in Treasuries futures, and the Aug. 30 Fed paper also noted speculators' repo borrowings. This is a fairly reliable sign of basis trade activity, the Aug. 30 Fed paper says. Overnight repo rates have steadily tracked the fed funds policy rate since March 2022. Basis trade liquidation, as funds got squeezed out of their positions through margin and collateral calls as volatility rocketed, likely contributed to that dislocation.

Uranium stone is seen at a news conference of Macusani Yellowcake and Plateau Energy in Lima, Peru July 16, 2018. Investors in uranium have sharply outperformed investors in clean energy and oil & gas majorsThe significance of that change extends well beyond Finland's power market, which gets over a third of its electricity from nuclear plants. The Global X Uranium ETF , the world's largest ETF exposed to the uranium space, is up 31% year-to-date, while Canada's first uranium ETF, the Horizons Global Uranium Index ETF (HURA.TO), is up over 45%, LSEG data shows. However, even with the broad new backing for nuclear, it is far from certain that a significant increase in nuclear power output will actually materialise. In addition, the cost of building new nuclear plants has sky-rocketed in recent years.

Renewed optimism about the economy calmed demand concerns while expectations of the largest oil production cuts since 2007 started to sap supply. Saudi Arabia and its OPEC allies refuse to boost oil production, much to the chagrin of the US. And so that's why I think it's just really, really interesting. Boosting uranium production takes years, he added, so it may take years to fix the shortage. Oil-adjacent stocks are the second-largest part of the Praetorian Capital Fund, Kupperman said.

Bob van Dijk Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe immediate and mutually agreed departure of Naspers and Prosus CEO Bob van Dijk underscores a complicated few years for a firm seen riding on the coattails of its holdings in Chinese tech giant, Tencent . The South African Reserve Bank gave Naspers the greenlight to begin buying back more of its shares from Prosus. 'Getting rid' of the cross holdingPrior to the current structure, Naspers (headquartered in South Africa) owned a third of Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings. Van Dijk oversaw the decision to split off its holding of Tencent and other tech holdings into Prosus in 2019. But that crossholding offered little value to investors with van Dijk telling Reuters at the time: "They [shareholders] said we don't like this cross holding, it creates complexity.

I learned to roller skate. I used the skate key to affix the metal skates to the soles of my red oxfords, a worn-out pair of shoes my mother held in reserve for playing outside. Without a care, I tested my mettle, staring down the rasp from the top of the hill, and took off — whoosh! But before I could take a second breath, the clamp on my left skate came loose. Attached only by a tattered strap, it dangled treacherously from my ankle, while my right foot rocketed on, detached and indifferent to the plight at hand.

Before Beatlemania, there was the distinctive Höfner violin bass — the first guitar that Paul McCartney bought after becoming the bassist for the Beatles. That bass can be heard on some of the band’s most famous hits, including “Love Me Do,” “She Loves You,” and “Twist and Shout.”Mr. McCartney picked up the instrument in a Hamburg music store in 1961, and it accompanied the Fab Four as they rocketed to stunning success, becoming the most famous band in the world. But the guitar vanished eight years later. A new campaign is seeking to find the missing instrument, and hundreds of people have responded, hoping to help solve the decades-old mystery: Where is Paul McCartney’s missing bass guitar?

OTTAWA, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Canada, citing the risk of potential dangers, is advising LGBTQ travelers planning trips to the United States to check how they might be affected by recently passed laws in some states, Ottawa said on Tuesday. Anti-LGBTQ demonstrations in the United States last year rocketed 30-fold compared with 2017 and legal moves to restrict LGBTQ rights are on the rise. Canada's travel advisory for the United States now includes a cautionary message for those who consider themselves two-spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning or intersex - or 2SLGBTQI+ for short. The overall risk profile for the United States remains at green, indicating a normal security precautions requirement. The United States is Canadians' top travel destination, and in June residents returned from about 2.8 million trips south of the border.

Sky-high food inflation after erratic monsoon rains damaged crops and disrupted supply chains. Food inflation for July hit a staggering 11.5%, far more than 4.6% in June and marking a three-year high. Even when customers do purchase fashion items, they buy far fewer than they once would have, some of the managers also said. The downturn in fashion spending has also been accompanied by a slide in spending at restaurant chains like Domino's. In some encouraging signs, tomato prices have eased off peaks and India's central bank chief last week said vegetable prices, which have begun to soften, will decline from September.

What do you think it means?” MacCallum asked in the opening question of the evening. The first question wasn’t about former Republican President Donald Trump, indicted four times, about to face arraignment in Georgia in less than 24 hours. And even when Baier and MacCallum confronted the candidates with some of their more strenuous questions, they themselves appeared to do so reluctantly. Take the issue of Trump, a topic that went noticeably unaddressed for nearly the first hour of the debate. Of course, it is clear why Fox News preferred to avoid the topic of Trump.

Six weeks remained before the release of her second album, “Guts,” and she was racked with anxiety — about finding a spot for her SUV. The car was her dream purchase, her favorite place to listen to music and yes, she feels guilty about the gas. Analyst Charlie Chan named Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing a "catalyst driven idea" whose shares could rally given its role as the sole supplier for Nvidia's artificial intelligence graphics processing units. The stock has served as the stock market's AI poster child in 2023, surging more than 215%. As a supplier to Nvidia, Taiwan Semiconductor has also benefited from the buzz around AI, with its U.S.-listed shares up more than 24% this year. Morgan Stanley regards Nvidia's October revenue guidance as a "key check point" pointing to AI-fueled semiconductor demand at Taiwan Semiconductor, as well as the growth of its Chip on Wafer on Substrate capacity supply, a vital part of the chip manufacturing process. Chan anticipates a 5% uptick in Taiwan Semiconductor shares should Nvidia exceed consensus October revenue guidance, and come in above $13 billion.

OTTAWA, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The Canadian government, under pressure over the rising cost of housing, could consider capping foreign student visas, which have rocketed in recent years, new Housing Minister Sean Fraser said on Monday. Official data show there were more than 800,000 foreign students with active visas in 2022, up from 275,000 in 2012. Canada is a popular destination for international students since it is relatively easy to obtain a work permit. Fraser, who was immigration minister before taking up his job last month, said the sharp rise in the number of students was putting pronounced pressure on some housing markets. Asked whether a cap could be imposed on the number of foreign students, he said, "I think that is one of the options that we ought to consider."

CNN —The right-wing media universe is maturing — and finding great success — beyond typical news commentary. That’s quite a feat, considering singer Christopher Anthony Lunsford was virtually unknown just weeks ago. It’s also illustrative of the power amassed by right-wing media forces, taking unknown quantities and churning them out into overnight blockbuster hits, a weaponized cudgel against perceived enemies in mainstream institutions. And, while he is a well known country singer, Jason Aldean’s widely criticized “Try That In a Small Town” was not much of a commercial success until it was boosted by right-wing media to the top of the Billboard charts. As conservatives increasingly see legacy media companies and performers as not only disagreeable, but outright evil, it makes sense that they would look toward outsiders to fill their entertainment needs.
