One Reno car wash is turning away burners after caked-on mud and clay damaged its machinery. Finding a way to get them clean is proving to be difficult — and annoying some car wash managers in the process. One car wash said it is turning away excessively muddy cars, due to dirt causing damage to the machinery, AP reported. Neither Burning Man nor Sierra Car Wash immediately responded to Insider's request for comment ahead of publication. Difficulty at the car wash isn't the only issue that the rain and mud caused burners.

Many of us (myself included) raise an eyebrow at Burning Man. Burning Man would feel much less annoying if the festival just said, yeah, we’re a bunch of idiots who want to party in Mad Max costumes. The Burning Man organizers wrote in a statement: “Burning Man is a community of people who are prepared to support one another. One hopes that events like the flooding at Burning Man will be galvanizing, both for those who experienced it and those who watched in horror from afar. It’s easy to sniff at Burning Man, which seems at once so self-important and so very insubstantial.

CNN —Thousands of Burning Man attendees finally made their mass exodus after intense rain over the weekend flooded camp sites and filled them with thick, ankle-deep mud, stranding more than 70,000 free-spirited revelers as they waited for the Nevada desert city to dry out. Thousands of people waited hours Monday to leave Burning Man in Nevada's Black Rock City. But that’s not unusual: It’s taken between six to nine hours during peak travel times in past years, according to a Burning Man website. BLACK ROCK CITY, Nevada, Sept 4 (Reuters) - Thousands of Burning Man attendees readied to make their "exodus" on Monday as the counter-culture arts festival in the Nevada desert ends in a sea of drying mud instead of a party around its flaming effigy namesake. One person died at the event in the Black Rock Desert, authorities said on Sunday, providing few details. Every year Burning Man brings tens of thousands of people to the Nevada desert to dance, make art and enjoy being part of a self-sufficient, temporary community of like-minded spirits. The festival typically has a penultimate night send-off with the burning of a giant wooden effigy of a man, along with a fireworks show. Data center development is booming and AI is expected to stoke already growing demand. Demand is sapping power grids in major markets and pushing data center development across the US. The project's neighbors include Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon – all of whom have similar plans, or are already underway with major data center projects. The message came after a torrid period of growth by the data center industry in that region. Wes Swenson, Nova's CEO, said the Reno region was becoming increasingly popular for data center development because of its access to power.

The growth could put data centers in competition with local populations for space and resources. As my colleague Dan Geiger reports today in an excellent story on a data center development boom, the AI explosion has triggered a surge in investment in these warehouse-like complexes. For example, DataBank, a data center provider backed by investment firm DigitalBridge, is putting smaller data centers in the suburbs of "tier two and tier three cities," CEO Marc Ganzi told my colleague Ellen Thomas. Unlike e-commerce warehouses, these data centers don't add a bunch of traffic to the roads, and they're pretty quiet. As a result of limited generation capacity in places like Arizona and northern Virginia, these data centers are popping up anywhere where the local utilities can support them.

Researchers may have solved a big mystery surrounding a very big fish. Around the world, freshwater fish are in trouble. The fish, a female, weighed 661 pounds, or about 300 kilograms, and set a record for the heaviest freshwater fish ever caught. The discovery was surprising because the species, known as the giant freshwater stingray, like many of the other big fish of the Mekong, is listed as endangered. “It’s a shock and also opens the door to so many questions.”Nearly a third of freshwater fish worldwide are threatened with extinction.
