No matter how great of a relationship you have with your boss, it's generally not the best idea to be friends with them. That's because a personal relationship can make things complicated when they may need to make difficult decisions, says Phoebe Gavin, a leadership and workplace coach. "At the end of the day, if your boss's boss says, 'Hey, we can't afford to employ your friend anymore. You need to lay them off,' you know what your boss is going to do? Interpersonal connections are important in the workplace, but they "can't be the foundation of your professional relationship with your boss or your colleagues," Gavin says.

CNN —Most moviegoers can pinpoint one summer movie – or perhaps, a summer of movies – in their formative years that really and truly cemented their love for going to the cinema, whether it be 1975’s “Jaws,” “E.T. And while streaming has clearly siphoned off part of the audience, particularly for more serious films, what we think of as “summer movies” still have the potential to rake in cash just like the old days. (CNN and DC are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros. Courtesy Warner Bros. PicturesInitially meant for streaming platforms, this vehicle will herald the cinematic arrival of DC Studios’ first Latino superhero, played by Xolo Maridueña of “Cobra Kai” and “Parenthood” fame. If the fast-paced trailer is any indication, the movie looks sure to whisk those dog days of summer doldrums away quite nicely.

The Conflict Over Vandalizing Art as a Way to Protest

This article is part of our special report on the Art for Tomorrow conference that was held in Florence, Italy. Seldom in the history of art have so many masterpieces been vandalized in so little time. “What is worth more, art or life?” shouted one protester, Phoebe Plummer, 21, as visitors gasped and called for security. Videos of the attacks were seen by millions of people around the world, including, no doubt, the leaders. Yet the attacks also upset many members of the public concerned about art damage, and led the directors of top world museums to issue a stern statement, raising the question of whether art actually is an effective vehicle for protest.

But a career coach strongly recommends against it for a simple reason: It makes your life a lot more "chaotic." "Take the long view," career and leadership coach Phoebe Gavin tells CNBC Make It. Finding a more stable and fulfilling career — which may ultimately pay more down the road, too — starts with some intentional self-questioning, Gavin says. Perhaps you need to start looking at job listings, and gauging which opportunities might represent the "right" job, rather than simply the next one. "If you're consistent about taking the long view, you're always going to have a career that is within your control," Gavin says.
CNN —The unrelenting drought that has devastated the Horn of Africa and left more than 20 million people facing acute food insecurity would not have been possible without climate change, a new analysis has found. In a world without human-caused climate change, this devastating drought would not have happened. The organization is made up of a team of international scientists who, in the immediate aftermath of extreme weather events, analyze data and climate models to establish what role climate change played. The scientists also looked at whether climate change was to blame for the lack of rain, but concluded there was no overall impact. “The country continues to pay the price of global warming and climate change,” he added.
Want to Explore Your Childhood? Start With a Floor Plan.

Like most other gated suburbs in medium-density Chinese cities, ours was a cluster of nondescript buildings, countless lives piled to the skies. If Vermeer conjured a corner of my childhood bedroom on canvas and asked me to finish the rest, I’d have a hard time. Only floor plans have given my memories of movement a tangible form, a shape for the routine motions that made up my days. I walked through the front door and into the living room. A floor plan is the only way I’ll retain anything of that route to the window.
The Best of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Openers

Is it the best song on Haim’s sprawling and fantastic 2020 album “Women in Music Part III”? Even though she was born in 2000, “Care” shows how intuitively she understands something about the sort of scuzzy, anthemic indie-pop that underground labels like Slumberland Records were releasing in the ’90s. (A “Best of Slumberland Records” playlist in a future installment of The Amplifier? Muna featuring Phoebe Bridgers: “Silk Chiffon”Two Eras Tour openers for the price of one! Far and away my favorite song from Muna’s 2022 self-titled album, this one is pure pop bliss and a refreshing reverie of queer joy.

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Writing for CNN Opinion, Rep. Justin Pearson noted, “This should be a chastening moment for revanchist forces in Tennessee’s legislature and across the country. Over the long haul, the undemocratic machinations employed to oust us from office are destined to fail. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once famously said that the moral arc of the universe bends toward justice. “As a Jewish historian,” Perry wrote, “I worry about the tension between preserving the memory of past hardships while not locking our entire history into a tale of oppression.
I learned this lesson the hard way after my first layoff years ago. Many people don’t realize it, but there are two job markets: the public job market, driven by job boards and careers pages, and the shadow job market, driven by relationships and reputation. If you want to access the shadow job market, you need to know people, and people need to know you. I’ve derived great joy and fulfillment from mentoring and sponsoring people throughout my professional career. If you start investing in your professional resilience today, yours can be too.
But some travelers aren't thrilled about what it takes to pull off a trip to Walt Disney World these days. He said he goes to Disney World about "once a month." They will leave thinking food at Disney World is a "cheeseburger and a hot dog … which could not be farther from the truth," he said. Walt Disney World comprises four theme parks, two water parks and dozens of themed hotels, plus a shopping and entertainment area called Disney Springs. He called Disney World an "amazing spa destination" and said Disney Springs, formerly known as Downtown Disney, has shopping, live music and fantastic restaurants.
A streak of conspiratorial glee runs through “The Record,” the full-length debut album by boygenius. At Bridgers’s instigation, they regrouped to record a full album in January 2022; it’s being released on Friday. Even in the quietest, most self-questioning songs on “The Record,” boygenius sounds like its members are egging on one another, cheering the boldest moves and pushing past collaboration toward synergy. The three songwriters found one another as they crossed paths on the indie-rock circuit in the 2010s. Last month, Starbucks launched a new line of olive oil-infused coffee and espresso drinks in Italy. Starbucks Reserve Roasteries in Chicago, Seattle, and New York will be the first stores to offer the olive oil elixirs. Reserve stores like the chain's new Empire State Building location sell premium coffee and espresso drinks. Dousing your morning brew with olive oil may sound unappetizing to some. The Delish food site said the Oleato Iced Shaken Espresso was a terrific choice for iced coffee fans.

"Everybody has a different amount of fibroglandular tissue and a different pattern," Freer said, referring to dense breast tissue. The Sundance Film Festival: A Lively Market for Indie Cinema

After two years of Covid-19 fears, the Sundance Film Festival returned to in-person screenings, and exhilaration was in the air. Given the chance to screen most offerings remotely, I attended from my living room. These days, with indie cinema still having trouble attracting ticket buyers, the festival is becoming more and more of a shopping center for streaming services. Drawing a similar price, this time from Apple for its streaming service, was “Flora and Son,” another musical drama from writer-director John Carney (“Once”). Keeping its titular promise, the film is thoroughly campy, far too much for my taste.
Last Friday, I was informed that I was being laid off from my position at Vox Media. Today is my last day as executive director of talent and development for Vox.com after one year at the company. "What's the difference between the life I'm experiencing now and the one I want to have? It's about what kind of life I'm trying to live. At the end of the day, there is no job that's 100% secure because companies exist to thrive and drive profits.
But some industry insiders say the company's influencer strategy feels out of touch. Trendy online retailer Revolve owes its success to influencers. Revolve, which launched in 2003, has a strategy centered around building awareness through sponsoring events and experiences such as Revolve Festival, Revolve Around The World, Revolve Gallery, as well as short-term retail experiences and influencer trips. But some influencer industry insiders said they feel the brand's influencer strategy has not matured as the market has. In May, Marketing Brew's Phoebe Bain wrote that sending an influencer products with no strings attached was a successful influencer marketing strategy for some DTC brands.
