Luigi Mangione retained prominent attorney Karen Friedman Agnifilo to represent him on New York charges in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The firm, Agnifilo Intrater LLC, confirmed Friedman Agnifilo will represent him but declined to comment further. Friedman Agnifilo was the chief assistant district attorney in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office under Cyrus Vance Jr. for seven years. Pennsylvania attorney Thomas Dickey has said that he had not seen evidence linking his client to the killing and Mangione would plead not guilty to the charges in both states. Dickey and Friedman Agnifilo could not immediately be reached for comment on Saturday.

The House passed a massive defense spending bill Wednesday with a provision that bars the military’s health care program from covering transition-related care for minors. Johnson did not return a request for comment regarding the potential effects of the provision on some military families. “[B]lanketly denying health care to people who need it — just because of a biased notion against transgender people — is wrong,” Smith said in a statement Tuesday. She said the Tricare restriction would further affect where service members can live and how long they serve. “Military families with trans kids have been serving for decades and it’s never been an issue,” she said.

The family of the man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare’s CEO had reported him missing last month, and his mother told police her son could be the person seen in surveillance photos one day before his arrest, law enforcement sources told NBC News. Mangione’s mother said she last spoke to her son on July 1 and that he had been working in San Francisco, the flyer says. The killing sparked a large manhunt that included the wide distribution of surveillance photos of a person of interest, and a $60,000 reward. After the killing, a San Francisco police officer thought the images of the person of interest had similarities to the image of Mangione from the missing person report, multiple law enforcement officials said. San Francisco police contacted the FBI about the possible identity of the man in that photo, the FBI said.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korean lawmakers are set to vote for a second time Saturday on whether to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law, with support for the motion appearing to grow within his own party after he defiantly defended his actions. There have been widespread calls for Yoon to step down since he declared emergency martial law last week, plunging the East Asian democracy and key U.S. ally into chaos. Yoon, who took office in 2022 for a single five-year term, has struggled to advance his agenda in the opposition-controlled parliament, and the martial law declaration has only further eroded his public support. Since the first vote failed, at least seven PPP members have publicly said they now support impeachment, bringing the motion within one vote of passage. “I propose that PPP adopt voting for the impeachment as our party platform.”Stella Kim reported from Seoul, South Korea, and Jennifer Jett from Hong Kong.

Exxon Mobil and Chevron are jumping into the race to power artificial intelligence data centers, as the two oil majors bet tech companies will ultimately turn to natural gas to meet their tremendous energy needs. Exxon unveiled plans this week to build a natural gas plant to power a data center. The oil major estimates decarbonizing AI data centers could represent up to 20% of its total addressable market for carbon capture and storage by 2050. Chevron is also working on ways to power data centers, said Jeff Gustavson, president of the oil company's new energy business, at the Reuters NEXT conference on Wednesday. Chevron is a major national gas producer with power generation equipment and very large tracts of land that could be used for data centers, the executive said.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a case about whether a charitable group linked with the Catholic Church can claim a religious exemption from Wisconsin’s unemployment tax system. The Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior appealed after the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in March that its activities are not religious in purpose, meaning the various groups it controls could not obtain the same exemption that strictly religious entities can get. The Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission had concluded that the charitable groups were not “operated primarily for religious purposes” under Wisconsin law. The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority that is often solicitous of religious claims. Groups representing various Christian denominations and people of other religious faiths, including Jews and Sikhs, also asked the court to take up the case.
