The National Football League, founded in 1920, was an unpopular pipsqueak 90 or so years ago. The college player who went first in the 1936 draft, a Heisman Trophy winner, decided to become a foam rubber salesman instead of turning pro. began to change the rules of the game in a way that encouraged passing, made scoring easier and elevated the role of strategy. YouTube bet big on the NFL to boost its subscriber base, and content creators have been key to that push. After YouTube committed $2 billion per year to secure the rights to NFL Sunday Ticket, YouTube TV grew from 5 million subscribers in 2022 to more than 8 million this year. Enlisting some of YouTube's top creators to promote NFL Sunday Ticket helped drive engagement among tens of millions of users, the league said. A subscription to YouTube TV costs $73 per month, with an additional annual fee of $349 for access to NFL Sunday Ticket. YouTube TV enlisted familiar YouTube stars including lifestyle creators, vloggers and sports creators to attract new audiences to the NFL.

NEW YORK (AP) — As host of “The Daily Show” from 1999 to 2015, Jon Stewart changed comedy — and arguably journalism, too — with sharp, satirical takes on politics and current events. Catching lightning again will be difficult — particularly at a time when late-night television is greatly diminished as a cultural force and others, some from Stewart's family tree, are now competitors. It can be even tougher when, as Salon critic Melanie McFarland put it, the current Jon Stewart is forced to compete with memories of the old Jon Stewart. “Jon Stewart totally changed the face of late-night,” says Robert Thompson, director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University. “There's something so 2010 about Jon Stewart now,” he says.

Its advantage wasn’t lost on Netflix cofounder and former CEO Reed Hastings, who’s namechecked YouTube as a threat to Netflix. YouTube has become a media giant without Hollywood contentMany in media dismiss or overlook YouTube because it doesn’t look like a Hollywood player. Its TV business, YouTube TV, is a bundle of other people’s channels. And YouTube TV is now the fourth-largest pay-TV service in the country, with more than 8 million subscribers. The real threat is that Netflix and YouTube dominate and everyone else fights over a tiny slice of pie.

One, sports fans will go to great lengths (including piracy) to find the content they're looking for. The NFL has done, I think, a really good job of continuing to evolve their product to make it as TV-friendly as it can be. Brian Fuhrer, senior vice president at NielsenThe NFL also benefits from the deference that networks show the league. Broadcast's core audience is typically older, so when NFL games come on in the fall it draws younger viewers back in. But even if things aren't as good for the NFL, they're still going to be pretty good — and a lot better, ratings-wise, than anything else.

But the presence of Taylor Swift is adding a strange new dimension to a lot of conventional beliefs about the optimal spot for an ad to appear. AdvertisementLike many other advertisers, Hellmann’s had no idea when they locked in their Super Bowl buys early last year that there’d be a media frenzy around the romance between Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Advertisers are already anticipating that Swift’s presence will drive more engagement for advertisers lucky enough to have booked the right spots, though it’s a bit of a crapshoot as there’s no guarantee when, or even if , Swift will make an appearance. There is also another spike in female viewership that happens during Super Bowl broadcasts.

On Wednesday, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the untitled Disney Animation film slated for Thanksgiving is a sequel to the beloved 2016 film "Moana." Disney's animation studios — Walt Disney Animation and Pixar — have struggled at the box office in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decision trained parents to seek out new Disney titles on streaming, not theaters, even when Disney opted to return its films to the big screen. As a result, no Disney animated feature from Pixar or Walt Disney Animation has generated more than $480 million at the global box office since 2019. A sequel to "Moana" will arrive about six months after the theatrical release of "Inside Out 2," a sequel to the hit 2015 animated film about what really goes on inside a person's head.

"Netflix won the streaming wars in 2009 when they started streaming," said Tim Nollen, a media analyst at Macquarie. Some things have inexplicable staying power. And for nostalgic millennials, there is “Gilmore Girls.” The show ended its seven-year run on the WB and CW networks in 2007, yet viewers keep returning to the familiar comfort of the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Conn., where the series was set. Netflix recorded 500 million viewing hours for the show from January to June of last year, surpassing hits like “Seinfeld” and “Stranger Things,” and data released on Monday by the research firm Nielsen showed that “Gilmore Girls” was among the Top 10 most-watched shows across the major streaming platforms in 2023. The show, which concluded the month before the iPhone was introduced, is even finding a younger audience on TikTok, where users post scenes they love and argue about their favorite romantic partners for every character. Last year, studios continued to pull back how much they spend on new TV shows. A pair of strikes effectively shut down Hollywood for several months, disrupting new releases of television shows and movies. And yet Americans kept on streaming. There were nearly a million television shows and movies for Americans to choose from on over 90 streaming services.
