BANGKOK (AP) — Shares tumbled in Asia on Thursday following a retreat on Wall Street after big U.S. companies delivered mixed profit reports and Treasury yields added pressure on stocks. Exports rose 4.3% while imports sank 16.3% in September and the trade balance swung to a surplus of 62.4 trillion yen ($410 billion). A big threat for the global economy is what oil prices will do to inflation. It rose 2.6% after reporting stronger profit than expected for the latest quarter as its revenue rose after it hiked prices. In other trading early Thursday, the dollar fell to 149.80 Japanese yen from 149.93 yen.

Tesla downshifts out of ludicrous mode

The Model Y maker’s gross and operating profit margins were once the envy of the entire American automotive industry. As Tesla began rolling more vehicles off the production line than it could sell, however, Musk repeatedly offered discounts to rev demand. Even setting aside tough financial comparisons because of the factory shutdowns needed to retool its best-selling vehicles, progress has been sluggish. Tesla’s gross margin at its core automotive business, adjusting for regulatory credits, has fallen nearly in half, to 16.3%, according to the latest quarterly results released on Wednesday. Tesla sold just a hair under half of all U.S. battery-powered rides in the third quarter, according to Cox Automotive, down from 75% in early 2022.

On that basis, Tesla’s earnings fell short of analysts’ consensus estimate of 73 cents per share, according to FactSet. The discounts range from $4,400 on Tesla’s top-selling vehicles to as much as $20,000 on its most expensive models. Plus, it will be “productive for the gaming industry as a whole and healthy for competition in the gaming market,” he said. In the meantime, the U.K. regulator was the last major obstacle to the transaction going through. British regulators had initially blocked the transaction over concerns Microsoft could withhold Activision titles from the cloud gaming market. One factor was the EU’s approval, granted after Microsoft promised to automatically license Activision titles royalty-free to cloud gaming platforms. But the CMA's flip-flopping makes the U.K. regulator look “weak and indecisive,” he said.

While the 32 billion Swedish crowns ($3 billion) hit is a non-cash impairment, Vonage remains a major goof. On Wednesday, shares in Germany-listed Fresenius Medical Care (FMEG.DE) fell 20% after a medical trial showed a Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) drug can reduce the risk of kidney failure. Diabetes and obesity drugs are showing their fringe benefits. In a recent drug trial, Wegovy, an obesity remedy made by Denmark’s Novo Nordisk, reduced the incidence of serious cardiovascular events like strokes and heart attacks by 20% in overweight patients. Sarah Huckabee Sanders' office planned to use Republican Party funds to reimburse the state for a $19,000 lectern, which was bought in June using a government credit card. The undated reimbursement note adds to weeks of scrutiny over the purchase, which has dominated political talk in Arkansas. Mars has said he has a client willing to give a confidential statement to lawmakers who has firsthand knowledge that Sanders' office interfered with open records requests. Earlier emails about the purchase released Monday don't reference plans for the Arkansas Republican Party to reimburse the state. Sanders’ office has not said what features contributed to the lectern’s seemingly high cost.

Matt Gaetz Moves to Oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy
  + stars: | 2023-10-02 | by ( Kaia Hubbard | Oct. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +3 min
Rep. Matt Gaetz formally sought to remove the House speaker on Monday evening, filing a motion to vacate that would force Kevin McCarthy from his post in what will be a historic clash within the chamber’s Republican caucus in the days to come. “It is becoming increasingly clear who the speaker of the House already works for, and it’s not the Republican conference,” the Florida Republican said. And though it only takes one lawmaker to bring up a vote to vacate the speaker, it would require a majority of voting lawmakers to succeed. In turn, they gained the power to bring up a motion to vacate the speaker – lowering the threshold to just a single lawmaker’s request. McCarthy has repeatedly brushed off the threats, touting his fight for speaker as an example of his resilience.

After Averted Shutdown, McCarthy’s Gavel on the Line
  + stars: | 2023-10-02 | by ( Kaia Hubbard | Oct. | At P.M. | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +6 min
McCarthy has the support of most of his members for remaining speaker, but his conference has been riddled with infighting. If just a handful of those members joined with all Democrats, McCarthy would indeed be imperiled. It remains to be seen how many of those members – or others – might support a motion to oust McCarthy. So with a razor-thin GOP majority in the House, whether McCarthy keeps his gavel will almost certainly depend on Democrats. And adding to the troubles was McCarthy’s insistence on Sunday that Democrats were “willing to let government shutdown,” despite their support for the legislation that outnumbered Republicans’.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said Monday that unfair tactics used by Google led to its dominance as a search engine, tactics that in turn have thwarted his company's rival program, Bing. Nadella said Google's dominance was due to agreements that made it the default browser on smartphones and computers. The Justice Department's antitrust case against Google centers on deals the company struck with Apple and other device makers to use Google’s search engine. In an ironic twist, the constraints and distractions posed by the government’s antitrust case against Microsoft helped provide a springboard for Google to turn its search engine into a dominant force. By the time Microsoft started its scramble to develop its own search engine, Google had already become synonymous with looking things up on the internet.

McCarthy’s Centrist Path Out of a Government Shutdown
  + stars: | 2023-09-29 | by ( Kaia Hubbard | ) www.usnews.com   time to read: +9 min
But with a funding bill seemingly out of reach, all signs suggest that those entrenched positions will result in a long and painful government shutdown. And it may be enough to arouse a dormant group of centrists whose own interests favor a functional legislative branch. And adding to McCarthy’s bind is the pledge that conservatives will call for his ouster should he work with Democrats to avoid a shutdown. Moderate Republicans, flanked by House Democrats, seize upon the moment. Meanwhile, another possible path, however unlikely, appears open to willing Democrats and centrist Republicans.

Exorbitant CEO pay is a frustration shared by Hollywood creatives and Detroit autoworkers alike. Since 1978, the CEO compensation among America’s 300 biggest companies has gone up 1,460%, while the typical worker’s pay grew by just 18% (both adjusted for inflation), according to the Economic Policy Institute, a progressive think tank. Over the same period, CEO pay at the Big Three Detroit automakers — GM, Ford and Chrysler parent Stellantis — has jumped an average of 40%, or roughly how much of a raise striking workers are now demanding. But a company’s profit depends not only on bringing in hearty revenue, but also on keeping costs — including workers’ pay — low. CEO pay went up 40%… No one had any complaints about that, but God forbid the workers ask for their fair share,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper last week.

New York CNN —Tesla’s Dojo supercomputer could fuel a $500 billion jump in the electric vehicle maker’s market value, analysts at Morgan Stanley said in a note Monday. Shares of Tesla jumped more than 6% during early trading Monday morning, on the heels of the rosy prediction from Morgan Stanley’s team about the automaker’s supercomputing efforts. The Morgan Stanley team, lead by longtime Tesla analyst Adam Jonas, predicted that the massive drive in value could come from Dojo potentially unlocking new revenue streams through the wider adoption of robotaxis and software services. The analysts compared the potential of Dojo at Tesla to the “same forces that have driven” Amazon Web Services to propel Amazon’s profitability to new heights. The world’s most valuable carmaker had a market cap of some $788.74 billion as of the market close on Friday.

But I’m one of the lucky ones, because I’m still here. The dark descent into the nefarious underworld of heroin addiction is well documented, but the challenging and deeply personal world of recovery and hope is rarely seen. Part of the motivation for making this film came from a need to understand what dictates one’s chances of sobriety. I’m still working on that last one, but I think I got somewhere close to it while making this film.

London CNN —Mercedes-Benz has just unveiled new “close-to-production” concept vehicles that could outdo Tesla cars by going more than 466 miles on a single charge. That’s compared with a range of less than 380 miles for any Tesla model. The German automaker’s Concept CLA Class, revealed Sunday at the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, comprises four new models: a sedan, a station wagon and two SUVs. The vehicles will each have a range of more than 750 kilometers (466 miles), versus Tesla’s (TSLA) Model 3 and Model S, which have the brand’s highest ranges and each can go for just under 375 miles off one charge. Overall, charging speed and range are expected to be improved by up to 30% compared with the brand’s previous models, according to the company.
