Dewey and Kent were living in Philadelphia with their dog, Kipper, when they decided they wanted to move to London. Although the couple lived in a house in Philadelphia before they moved to London, Dewey says the houseboat feels more spacious and safer than any other place she's lived in before. Maisy Dewey

Donald J. Trump’s lawyers on Tuesday asked the judge who oversaw the former president’s criminal trial to lift a gag order on their client as the presidential campaign intensifies. The lawyers said in a letter to the judge, Juan M. Merchan, that the end of the trial on Thursday nullified the need for the gag order, which bars the former president from attacking witnesses, the jury and others involved in the case. Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 felonies, with a jury determining that he had falsified documents related to a hush-money payment his former fixer made to a porn star in 2016. “Now that the trial is concluded, the concerns articulated by the government and the court do not justify continued restrictions on the First Amendment rights of President Trump,” the lawyers, Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, wrote in the letter.

The next generation of the "Internet of Bodies," or IOB, could bring technological devices and the human body closer together than ever before. Academic and author Andrea M. Matwyshyn, who coined the term in 2016, describes it as "a network of human bodies whose integrity and functionality rely at least in part on the internet and related technologies, such as artificial intelligence." Smart glasses, which can function as cameras, headphones or monitors, are another example of early IOB devices. These devices completely merge with the body while maintaining a real-time connection to an external machine and the internet. "As bits and bodies meld and as human flesh becomes permanently entwined with hardware, software, and algorithms, IOB will test our norms and values as a society," she wrote.

You've heard the term "Internet of Things" – where inanimate objects can be connected to the internet and each other. But in 2016, academic and author Dr. Andrea M. Matwyshyn took it one step further, coining the term, "Internet of Bodies," or IoB. She describes it as "a network of human bodies whose integrity and functionality rely at least in part on the Internet and related technologies, such as artificial intelligence." These devices completely merge with the body while maintaining a real-time connection to an external machine and the internet. However, there are some existing laws that could be extended to safeguard IoB data.

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation. It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that. Mr. Trump is registered in Florida, which requires felons to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. The Florida secretary of state’s office did not respond to requests on Thursday to confirm Mr. Trump’s eligibility status.

With Donald J. Trump’s unprecedented felony conviction on Thursday, what has long been a remote and abstract concept could move closer to a stunning reality: a former president of the United States behind bars. A jury in Manhattan convicted Mr. Trump of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree, a crime that under New York State law carries a possible sentence that ranges from probation to four years in prison. But Mr. Trump is no ordinary defendant. And while most experts think a prison sentence is unlikely, the judge in the case, Juan M. Merchan, has made it known that he takes white-collar crime seriously. If Justice Merchan hands down a punishment that lands the former president behind bars — what is known as a custodial sentence — Mr. Trump would be no ordinary prisoner.

The jury filed into the courtroom and climbed into the jury box. The jurors confirmed that they had reached a verdict. According to Jane Rosenberg, a courtroom sketch artist who had a clear view of Mr. Trump in the moment, the former president looked over at the foreman as he began to stand up, but then immediately closed his eyes as the verdict came rolling in. The decision had come at what seemed to be a routine moment in the jury’s deliberations. Around 4:15 p.m., the judge, Juan M. Merchan, had told the prosecution and Mr. Trump that he was planning to dismiss the jury within the next 15 minutes.

Read previewThe jury in Donald Trump's criminal hush-money trial had a specific request before starting deliberations on Thursday — they asked to hear again what they described in a note as the judge's "rain metaphor" instruction. It advises a jury that they can infer that it's raining — by seeing someone's wet umbrella, for example — even if they don't see the rain themselves. The "rain metaphor," as the jury note called it, is often used by judges in jury instructions. AdvertisementOn Wednesday afternoon, they asked for the judge to read back roughly a half-hour of testimony. After the judge completed his recitation of the jury instructions, two of the court stenographers re-read portions of the testimony.

If Donald J. Trump is convicted, it will be up to Justice Juan M. Merchan to decide whether his punishment will include prison time. Mr. Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records related to the coverup of a $130,000 hush money payment that was made to the porn star Stormy Daniels in the days leading up to the 2016 election. But if Mr. Trump is convicted on more than one count, Justice Merchan would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning he would have Mr. Trump to serve prison time on each of the counts simultaneously. Incarceration is not a given: Justice Merchan could instead opt to impose a sentence of probation, with no prison time. Mr. Trump would then be required to regularly report to New York City’s Probation Department.

Within about an hour, a Manhattan jury will begin a discussion of historic import: determining whether Donald J. Trump is guilty of 34 felonies. But before the jurors begin to deliberate, the judge, Juan M. Merchan, will deliver legal instructions that will help guide the 12 New Yorkers who will hash out Mr. Trump’s fate. Justice Merchan will describe the legal meaning of the word “intent” and the concept of the presumption of innocence. He will remind the jurors that they pledged to set any biases aside against the former president before they were sworn in, and that Mr. Trump’s decision not to testify cannot be held against him. Then, according to a person with knowledge of the instructions that Justice Merchan plans to deliver, he will explain the 34 charges of falsifying business records that Mr. Trump faces.

They are the first jury in the 235-year history of the United States to be confronted with that weighty question. The payment was made to keep her silent about allegations that she and Trump had a sexual encounter (which Trump denies) ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Merchan then offered a detailed explanation of the legal rules that the jury must apply to make those determinations. This time it was for the judge to re-read the jury instructions to them, another indicator of the care they are taking in deliberations. We will see how long their deliberations take, but this afternoon’s developments suggest that it will not be an instant process.

Closing arguments start Tuesday in the Manhattan hush-money trial of former Donald J. Trump, signaling the final stages of the first criminal trial of an American president. Both prosecutors and defense lawyers will make their final cases for his guilt or innocence before jurors deliberate Mr. Trump’s fate. While opening statements are restricted to evidence, the prosecution and the defense will use closing arguments to argue how and why the evidence, testimony and law support a specific verdict. Closing arguments are expected to last for most or all of Tuesday and perhaps beyond. After closing arguments, the judge, Juan M. Merchan, will provide instructions to the 12 members of the jury that are meant to guide their deliberations.

The defense did not call Mr. Weisselberg either, nor did Mr. Trump take the stand in his own defense. And for weeks, Mr. Weisselberg’s absence has loomed large over Mr. Trump’s case, the first criminal trial of an American president. And when Mr. Trump was sworn in as president in 2017, he entrusted Mr. Weisselberg, along with Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, with running his company. Mr. Trump, Mr. Cohen told the jury, “approved” of the arrangement and knew that they would falsify records to cover it up. Over the course of their decades together, Mr. Cohen knew, Mr. Trump and Mr. Weisselberg had become more or less symbiotic.

The City of Wildwood, N.J., briefly closed its boardwalk late Sunday, citing “unruly teen crowds” at the bustling beachside attraction during the busy Memorial Day weekend but offering few details about what prompted the decision. City officials declared a state of emergency after midnight on Sunday, they said, but had reopened the boardwalk by 6 a.m. Monday. In a statement on Monday, the officials said the decision stemmed from “civil unrest” caused by “the extremely large number of young adults and juveniles in the city” but failed to specify what, if anything, the young people did to cause the state of emergency. The officials said the presence of the young people caused “an irrepressible number of calls for service” beginning Saturday night that left the police unable to respond to other emergencies, and that nearby police agencies were brought in to aid the department.

Nyoni’s first movie “I Am Not A Witch” broke through at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017 and won her a BAFTA.
