The IRS has finalized rules on required withdrawals for certain inherited individual retirement accounts and other plans. In final regulations last week, the agency confirmed most non-spouse beneficiaries have 10 years after the original owner's death to deplete inherited retirement accounts. These heirs also must take yearly required minimum distributions, or RMDs, which had been a lingering question among tax professionals for years. Before the Secure Act of 2019, heirs could "stretch" retirement account withdrawals over their lifetime, which reduced yearly taxes. Regardless, heirs are "missing the boat" because they should consider withdrawing more from inherited accounts now while tax rates are lower, said IRA expert and certified public accountant Ed Slott.

Fg Trade | E+ | Getty ImagesGen Xers are starting to reach age milestones that give them penalty-free access to certain retirement funds. And once they reach a certain milestone — age 59½ — they can withdraw money from their individual retirement accounts, or IRAs, and 401(k)s penalty free. Beyond those age guidelines, there are other exceptions that may enable savers to avoid penalties for early retirement withdrawals. Add money through catch-up contributionsFor younger Gen Xers, age 50 marks another milestone, when they can start making catch-up contributions to retirement accounts. To clear the way for tax-free withdrawals in retirement, retirement savers may opt to gradually convert pre-tax IRA funds to post-tax Roth accounts.

A CD earns a fixed interest rate, but you have to leave your money in it for a set amount of time. Ask yourself whether you have separate emergency savings, and if you should be investing instead. Consider a high-yield savings account if you think you may need to access funds soon. CDs are a great way to generate passive income because they require almost no oversight after the initial deposit. Make sure you have savings in an emergency fund in case you need money quickly.

This week, the benchmark Invesco Solar ETF (TAN) and the iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN) are down 6.2% and 4.6%, respectively. Residential solar stocks, including Enphase , Sunnova , Sunrun , SolarEdge and SunPower , would face a "severe impact" if Republicans successfully weaken or entirely repeal the IRA, according to Piper. The stock in the clean energy space with the least exposure to election risks is GE Vernova , according to a July slide deck from JPMorgan on clean energy. As a domestic manufacturer, First Solar potentially stands to benefit if the U.S. trade war with China intensifies under a Trump administration, according to Kallo. Though total IRA repeal may be unlikely, solar and clean energy stocks will "continue to be volatile until (and even after) the election due to headline risk," Kallo said.

The CrowdStrike software at fault operates at what’s called the kernel level of a computer, a much deeper level than what more ordinary applications such as browsers or video games do. For businesses with hundreds or thousands of laptops, desktops and servers running CrowdStrike’s security software, an individual human may have to perform that process over and over and over again. Because CrowdStrike’s security software is running on countless individual computers all around the globe, the update that got pushed to those devices caused them all to shut down, virtually simultaneously. The CrowdStrike bug may have initially been conflated with the Microsoft issue because CrowdStrike’s error affected only Windows machines. As of Friday morning, Microsoft said the issue with Microsoft 365 had been resolved and that the situation was improving.

Understanding retirement needsAssessing your retirement needsUnfortunately, there's no general number to aim for when saving toward retirement. Financial experts recommend delaying Social Security until you reach full retirement age (age 70). This rule states that retirees can withdraw up to 4% of their retirement savings in year one of retirement. The 4% rule in retirement planning suggests withdrawing 4% of your retirement savings each year to prevent you from prematurely running out of money for at least 30 years.

How Roth accounts workWith a traditional account, like a 401(k) or IRA, contributions you make in a given year can be subtracted from your taxable income. Roth accounts work the opposite way. You fund a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k) with money you've already paid taxes on. If you have most of your retirement assets tied up in traditional accounts, you can move money over to a corresponding Roth account in a move known as a Roth conversion. Why now is a good time to save in a Roth account

Roth individual retirement account conversions are a popular way to reduce future levies on pretax 401(k) or IRA withdrawals — and you can smooth out the upfront tax hit with a "Roth conversion ladder," experts say. Roth conversions transfer pretax or nondeductible IRA money to a Roth IRA, which offers future tax-free growth. The trade-off is regular income taxes incurred that year on the converted balance. By comparison, a Roth conversion ladder is a series of conversions over multiple years, meaning "you're paying taxes in smaller increments," said certified financial planner Preston Cherry, founder and president of Concurrent Financial Planning in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Of course, boosting your adjusted gross income any year can trigger other tax consequences, such as phaseouts for certain tax breaks.

Many retirees don't think about taxes until it's time to withdraw funds from a pretax account, which can be a costly mistake, financial experts say. Only 3 in 10 Americans have a plan to reduce taxes on retirement savings, according to a Northwestern Mutual study from January that polled roughly 4,600 U.S. adults. However, the "bucket strategy" is one way to minimize that burden, according to certified financial planner Sean Lovison, founder of Purpose Built Financial Services in the Philadelphia metro area.
