The Nobel committee just entered the AI chat
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
When asked by a reporter whether the committee took the AI connection into consideration when judging the nominees, one member on the chemistry committee basically brushed off the question and insisted the decisions were made purely on the science. The Nobel committee letting politics or PR weigh on their decisions? At first glance, it could seem like the Nobel committee has been gulping down Big Tech’s AI Kool-Aid. While gesturing to generative AI, Wong noticed that no one mentioned ChatGPT or Gemini or any other consumer-facing AI tools that companies are peddling. Similarly, in announcing the chemistry prize on Wednesday, committee members talked a lot about amino acid sequences and structural biochemistry.

Hurricane Milton is battering Florida days after Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc on several states. The two events are the latest sign that hurricanes are becoming more frequent, more ferocious, and more costly. They're also hitting employment and economic growth, at least in the short term. They estimated that a Category 5 storm could lower fourth-quarter annualized GDP growth by 0.14 percentage points, from a forecasted 2.3% to below 2.2%. "Rebuilding should provide a boost to economic activity in those affected regions in subsequent months, and potentially years," Sweet told BI, quoting from his recent note.

In today’s edition, politics reporters Matt Dixon and Allan Smith explore why Donald Trump is set to campaign in heavily Democratic states in the final stretch of the 2024 race. Trump plans rallies in solidly Democratic states in the race’s final weeksBy Matt Dixon and Allan SmithGet ready for Donald Trump’s blue state extravaganza. With less than four weeks until Election Day, the Republican presidential nominee is scheduled to hold rallies in staunchly Democratic states he has virtually no chance of winning. President Joe Biden won those states by an average of 20 points in 2020, with his 13-point Colorado win the closest. “Choosing high-impact settings makes it so the media can’t look away and refuse to cover the issues and the solutions President Trump is offering,” a senior Trump campaign adviser said of the strategy.

Hurricane Milton makes its way toward Florida. Hurricane Milton plows toward FloridaFlorida is, once again, bracing for a direct hit as Hurricane Milton approaches the state and the window to evacuate closes. A storm surge of up to 15 feet is forecast along a stretch of the coast that includes Tampa, St. Petersburg and Sarasota. Neither Harris nor Trump outline specific disaster-relief policies on their website. "Disasters are always political," Thomas Birkland, a political scientist at North Carolina State University who studies the politics of national disasters, told Business Insider. When he was president, Trump responded to several hurricanes. "A charitable interpretation would be mixed on crisis management," Birkland told BI about Trump's past responses to natural disasters. Presidents are somewhat limited in their disaster responses — both Kneeland and Birkland told BI that states and local governments lead disaster responses, with the federal government's assistance.

In today’s edition, politics reporter Allan Smith looks at how Elon Musk could help (or hurt) Donald Trump on the campaign trail. Plus, national political correspondent Steve Kornacki breaks down the different paths to victory Kamala Harris and Trump are attempting to chart in Pennsylvania. The disparate images helped paint a picture of both the benefits and the detriments to having Musk in Trump’s corner. Musk’s appearance at Trump’s Pennsylvania rally over the weekend was the culmination of a yearslong rightward drift for the eccentric billionaire, expedited by his purchase of Twitter in 2022. After his appearance in western Pennsylvania, Musk started to offer people $47 if they successfully get a swing-state voter to sign onto a petition backing the First and Second Amendments.

On Oct. 7, Hamas militants stormed the same base where Lifshitz was previously stationed, killing 15 young women in their assault. Many of the users identified as teen girls and young women, some as young as 13, NBC News found. Three users said that they’ve been exposed to eating disorder posts and communities on X through their algorithm-driven “For You” page, despite not knowingly engaging with such content previously. Despite X’s moderation, at least seven more communities featuring content promoting eating disorders and self-harm were identified.

Google’s search dominance is unwinding

New York CNN —Google is so synonymous with its core product that its name is a verb that means “search.” Yet Google’s dominance of that market is shrinking. For the first time in decades, Google next year will not control a majority of the US search market, according to a forecast by advertising research firm eMarketer. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. But as we wind down 2024, one thing appears clear: The naysayers on Team Hard Landing got it wrong. The “soft landing” versus “hard landing” metaphor — perhaps overused but visually handy — refers to the economy as an airplane and the Fed as the pilot. Pull the right levers at the right time, and you get a nice comfortable soft landing, with inflation cooling and the labor market thriving. He was far from alone in thinking that a soft landing was little more than a fantasy. “We should just drop the soft landing versus hard landing discourse and start talking about a robust expansion at mid-cycle,” Joe Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM, told Schwab Network in an interview.

Dig thisThe tree, which the study authors believe may have a biblical connection, is seen at 12 years old. Remarkably, the tree thrived and now stands 10 feet (3 meters) tall, although it has never flowered or produced fruit. Using DNA sequencing, the researchers identified the mystery tree as part of the Commiphora genus, but its exact species is unknown and likely extinct. Scientists aim to extract DNA from the remains to learn more about those buried there and whether they were related.

The (Donald) Trump campaign, on the other hand, is looking to the Sun Belt. Instead of knocking on doors in key states, Trump’s allies are using funding from tech billionaire Elon Musk to do some nontraditional things. But some things are still going to be much more expensive on Election Day than they were when Trump was president. It’s one month to Election Day, but that’s a little bit of a misnomer. No matter what happens with the 2024 election, Trump is unlikely to accept the results if Harris wins.

Heavy rains from Hurricane Helene caused flooding across western North Carolina, like here in Asheville. Melissa Sue Gerrits/Getty ImagesBut only about 2.6% of the 4.3 million properties across the state — or around 115,000 properties — had flood insurance as of June 2024, according to private provider Neptune Flood Insurance, which analyzed data from the government-backed National Flood Insurance Program. North Carolina Department of Insurance communications director Jason Tyson estimated that about 139,000 properties in the state have flood insurance through the NFIP. Part of the problem with flood insurance is a common misconception that regular home insurance covers flooding, which is rarely the case, four experts knowledgable about flood insurance and disaster management told Business Insider. "We don't think of western North Carolina and the Appalachian mountains as an area that has significant flood risk."
