The leader of a New York City suburb is recruiting 75 armed citizens, many of them former police officers, for a force of “special deputies” to be activated whenever he chooses. Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican who has allied himself with former President Donald J. Trump and thrust himself into the culture wars, posted a call in March for residents with gun permits and an interest in becoming “provisional emergency special deputy sheriffs.”The posting called the initiative a strategy to assist in the “protection of human life and property during an emergency” such as a hurricane or blackout — and perhaps, Mr. Blakeman later added, “a riot.”The new force has drawn vocal opposition in this well-to-do Long Island county, which is one of the country’s safest, protected by one of the largest police departments. It has plunged Nassau into a national debate about authoritarianism in an election season that some see as a fork in the road for American democracy.

Opinion | Should Democrats Press Biden to Step Aside?

To the Editor:Re “The Democratic Party Must Speak the Plain Truth to the President” (editorial, July 10):Democrats cannot have it both ways. Every day that passes without Democrats formulating a new plan to defeat Donald Trump decreases their chances of success. They must speak boldly: President Biden can indeed be part of the plan to defend democracy from Donald Trump, but to do so he must step aside and pass the torch. To the Editor:I am frustrated by the recent New York Times headlines, and especially the editorials, calling for President Biden to step down as a candidate. Donald Trump is the one who should step down.

Read previewThe trailer for the "Gladiator" sequel dropped on Tuesday, leaving fans wondering why Paul Mescal plays slave fighter Lucius instead of Spencer Treat Clark, who played him in the original. Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, a former Roman general who is betrayed and sold into slavery. The 2000 movie is one of the most beloved historical epics of all time and won five Oscars, including best film, best actor, and best director. But like Maximus, he's forced into becoming a fighter when he's captured by General Marcus Acacius (Pedro Pascal) and his soldiers. Representatives for Spencer Treat Clark did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

"Look, I have a cognitive test every day," he said in an interview on Friday with ABC News. Samuel Corum/Getty ImagesCompared to Trump, Biden has released far more comprehensive medical information, with the most recent update coming in February of 2024. One cognitive test is not sufficient to detect issues, doctors told the Wall Street Journal. In it, Dr. Bruce Aronwald said that he has conducted "several comprehensive examinations" and called Trump's cognitive exams "exceptional." Like Biden, though, Trump has made significant public gaffes, such as when he called the president of Egypt the "president of Mexico."

In June, 51 million people tuned in to watch the much-anticipated debate between Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden later told ABC that he “just had a really bad cold” on debate night and said he was distracted by Trump “still shouting” over his muted microphone while Biden was speaking. Last November, Dr. Bruce Aronwald, Trump’s personal physician since 2021, issued a meager, three-paragraph, data-devoid note attesting to Trump’s physical and cognitive fitness for office. While the USPSTF review is noncommittal on the use of dementia screening in ostensibly asymptomatic people, there’s no ambiguity in the use of testing in adults where dementia is a concern. There are a variety of screening exams such as the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) or Mini-Mental State Examination that are used to detect signs of cognitive decline.

As of now, the prospect of North Korean soldiers being deployed to Ukraine is speculative and unlikely, experts told Business Insider. "Given what we know about nutrition in North Korea, even in the army, they might have issues," he told BI. Biden was examined by his physician after the debate to check on a cold, the White House said, but it was a “brief check” and not a physical. Biden and his aides have said it was a “bad night.” The White House press team said Biden had a cold but did not take any medications to treat symptoms. The White House has rejected requests from the press to release more medical records and question Biden’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor. PoolWe often hear that observing a candidate on the campaign trail is the best assessment of the individual’s physical and cognitive health. Back in 2020, Biden said he was “constantly tested” by the work of running for president.

These ETFs, often called "buffer funds," use options to give investors downside protection in exchange for giving up potential upside. The funds come with different time horizons, and new funds are launching or resetting every month, so there are several options for investors to buy now and protect themselves through the November election. Many of the ETFs offer something in the range of 10% to 30% downside protection and are often called buffer funds. Other products that offer 100% downside protection — in exchange for smaller upside — are sometimes marketed as "principal protection funds." Jim Saulnier, a CFP and founder of Jim Saulnier & Associates in Fort Collins, Colorado, said his clients use both the buffer funds and the 100% downside protection funds.

The annual conversations around Pride marches, both in New York City and across the country, often focus on who should — or shouldn’t — be included. While these are crucial debates, they often mean that, paradoxically, what gets lost is a discussion of belonging in a broader sense. Pride retains its importance precisely because it gives the L.G.B.T.Q. A trove of photographs that elegantly capture Pride in all its inclusive intimacy, focusing not only on the marchers but on the crowds reveling from the sidelines, illuminates how powerful that element can be. “From the beginning,” Mr. Cratsley wrote, “I was excited by the parade’s exotic, somewhat chaotic sexiness and joy.

CNN —CNN Opinion asked political contributors to weigh in on the first presidential debate of the 2024 race. On the other hand, President Joe Biden did not meet expectations and may have increased concerns about his age and ability to lead for another four years. Debates are always more about style than substance, and President Joe Biden’s style was simply awful. Did President Joe Biden come off as a leader or a loser? And yes, the visuals in this first presidential debate of the cycle were phenomenally important.

He’s going to be a killer rebounder, monster screener and will consistently establish his position even against some of the stronger NBA players. I’m done doubting Edey, even as an NBA player. As an enormous ballhandler with serious touch and incredible vision as a passer, Topić is clearly an NBA player, even if it doesn’t all translate. Shannon is an elite athlete, but the NBA game requires more nuance, especially if he continues to be an inconsistent shooter. However, I also think he’s more than just a floor spacer on offense in spot-up situations and potentially as an off-ball scorer.

Especially the last bit: Corporate America is obsessed with ensuring their employees are staying productive when they’re working remotely, away from the gimlet eyes of management. It’s easy to imagine the types of pretend productivity gadgets these employees might have used: “mouse jigglers,” gizmos with a questionable name that make random, small motions of a mouse or touchpad. And Wells Fargo’s crackdown on these gadgets is just the latest attempt by big business to rein in perceived slacking by remote employees. That perceptual gap reflects a vast and growing mutual distrust between workers and employers in America. Major record labels Sony Music , Universal Music Group and Warner Records sued artificial intelligence companies Suno and Udio on Monday, accusing them of committing mass copyright infringement by using the labels' recordings to train music-generating AI systems. The companies copied music without permission to teach their systems to create music that will "directly compete with, cheapen, and ultimately drown out" human artists' work, according to federal lawsuits filed against Udio in New York and Suno in Massachusetts. Representatives for Suno and Udio did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the complaints. AI companies have argued that their systems make fair use of copyrighted material. Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Suno and New York-based Udio have raised millions in funding this year for their AI systems, which create music in response to user text prompts.
