Oil prices were little changed as investors eyed energy supply disruption, with the largest ports in Texas shut before Tropical Storm Beryl likely strengthens into a hurricane and makes landfall on Monday. Brent crude futures inched up 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $86.65 a barrel as at 0042 GMT after closing down 89 cents on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $83.08 a barrel, down 8 cents, after settling down 72 cents in the previous session. Lower interest rates can boost economic activity and increase crude oil demand. Investors were also watching for any impact from elections in the UK, France and Iran last week on geopolitics and energy policies.

U.S. crude oil was little changed on Friday but was on pace for a fourth straight weekly gain as falling inventories show an uptick in demand. Oil market analysts have been forecasting a tighter market in the third quarter as summer fuel demand picks up. U.S. inventory data appeared to confirm those forecasts, with crude stocks declining by 12.2 million barrels and gasoline falling by 2.2 million barrels last week. UBS is forecasting that global oil demand will grow by 1.5 million barrels per day, or bpd, this year, above the long-term growth rate of 1.2 million bpd. "As such, we still believe Brent will likely reach the USD $90/bbl mark this quarter," Staunovo said.

CNN —Australian police believe they have found the remains of a 12-year-old child reportedly attacked by a crocodile while swimming in a creek in the Northern Territory, they said on Thursday. “This is devastating news for the family, the community and everyone involved in the search,” senior sergeant Erica Gibson said in a statement. A search and rescue operation with community assistance was launched to find the child, and police scoured a large section of the creek by boat, they said on Wednesday. The search team was authorized to “remove the crocodile from the area,” Northern Territory police minister Brent Potter said, according to CNN affiliate 7news. There are more than 100,000 crocodiles – which can grow up to six meters (20 feet) long – in the Northern Territory, though fatal attacks are relatively rare.

Oil prices slip after data points to cooling U.S. economy
  + stars: | 2024-07-04 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Oil prices fell in early trade on Thursday after U.S. employment and business activity data came in weaker than expected, in signs the economy may be cooling in the world's top oil consuming nation. Separately, the ADP Employment report showed private payrolls increased by 150,000 jobs in June, below a consensus predicting an increase of 160,000, and after rising by 157,000 in May. However, weaker economic data may add to the Federal Reserve's arguments to start cutting rates, analysts said, a move that would be supportive for the oil markets as lower rates could boost demand. "The direction of recent data conforms to the Fed's easing bias," ANZ Research analysts said in a note. "A slowdown in growth momentum will support disinflationary impulses in coming months, paving the way for the Fed to cut rates."

Under the University of Virginia Center for Politics' current projections, there are five true toss-up states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. The reality is that if Biden is stuck playing defense in states Democrats usually win, Trump's return to the White House will be a foregone conclusion. The only question then will be how many Electoral College votes would the former president win. "If Biden's position gets worse, that's when you see maybe a Virginia or New Mexico get in play," Kondik said. Virginia, New Hampshire, New Mexico, or Minnesota are not going to be the states that put Trump over 270.

New York CNN —Inflation rates in Canada, the EU and Australia have popped higher in recent months. But that disconnect appears to be fading as inflation rates in the US continue to ease. The US also had a recent scare as inflation rates ticked higher. But after a year of the Fed holding interest rates steady at a 23-year high, inflation rates in the United States are once again declining. High inflation readings around the globe are concerning investors, José Torres, senior economist at Interactive Brokers, told CNN.

Oil prices were little changed on Tuesday, holding near the two-month highs reached in the previous session, on expectations for rising fuel demand from the summer travel season and possible U.S. interest rate cuts that could boost economic growth. Gasoline demand in the U.S., the world's biggest oil consumer, is expected to ramp up as the summer travel season picks up with the Independence Day holiday this week. Still, signs of less-than-expected demand growth have limited gains in oil prices. This was mainly because of lower imports into China, the world's biggest oil importer and the second-largest consumer.

Read previewThe Supreme Court on Monday handed former President Donald Trump a partial victory by kicking the future of his January 6 criminal case down to a lower court. But on a 6-3 vote, a majority of the high court decided that former presidents do hold some immunity. Before Monday's ruling, former presidents already held sweeping immunity from civil prosecution thanks to a Nixon-era case. In taking its time to craft this ruling, justices have essentially handed Trump another victory for his delay tactics. If he were to win the election, he would likely scuttle the January 6 case and Smith's other criminal case in Florida related to Trump's hoarding of classified documents.
