The issue at play: There's a process for borrowers with federal student loans to apply for a debt discharge if they can prove they were defrauded by their school. President Joe Biden's Education Department has canceled debt for millions of borrowers over the past few years under that process. But the lawmakers have said they're concerned Navient is continuing to narrowly define qualifications for discharge, resulting in borrowers being denied relief without sufficient explanations.

Republicans rush to try to define Tim Walz

CNN —Republicans moved quickly Tuesday to try to define Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, whom Vice President Kamala Harris has chosen as her running mate. “She found a 60-year-old White guy who has the same crazy ideas she does,” one of the advisers said. But he’s since fallen out of favor with the gun lobby over his support for gun safety actions as governor. Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst echoed that message, calling Walz “Bernie Sanders’ choice for VP.”

Bernie and Pete embraced their first names while Biden, Trump and Warren favored their last names. As Kamala Harris sets her eyes on the presidency, she is using a combination. Elizabeth Frantz/ReutersFor Harris, Atir says, using “Kamala” could be “potentially costly.” A first-name reference may lead women to be perceived as less deserving and competent. “Because of confirmation bias, a clearly identified phenomenon, it’s not good for the candidate, Kamala Harris, to have it continue to go on ‘Kamala,’ ” she said. … Respect the names that people are given, and use those names with respect.”CNN’s Jacqueline Howard contributed to this report.

The data also points a spotlight on the economic platform of Vice President Kamala Harris, who is poised to accept the Democratic presidential nomination this month amid signs of a slowing economy. But her economic views are less defined, maintaining broad references to strengthening the middle class, even as her record investigating Wall Street and her farther-left 2019 primary campaign platform have executives and investors on edge. According to those close to Harris, advisers and administration officials, Harris’ economic views were described as “pragmatic,” “centrist,” and even “pro-business,” with a goal of leveraging private-sector friendships for better outcomes at the ground level. The best day of Kamala Harris’s 2020 presidential campaign was its first. In that speech, delivered in January 2019, Ms. Harris owned her record as a prosecutor, told personal stories about the impact of her family and multicultural upbringing, and struck fear in the heart of her Democratic rivals. The argument for her candidacy at the time was similar to the arguments that voters and political analysts are making in her favor right now. Mr. Biden had the experience, Ms. Warren had the policy, and Senator Bernie Sanders had the progressive appeal — but Ms. Harris was the candidate who could theoretically do all the above. It did not matter that in that crowded primary contest, few voters said she was their first choice.

Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked legislation that would have expanded the child tax credit, a key tax break for millions of families. He said that Senate Republicans have concerns about the policy, but are willing to negotiate a "child tax credit solution that a majority of Republicans can support." If enacted, the bill would have improved access to the child tax credit and retroactively boosted the refundable portion for 2023, which could have triggered refund checks from the IRS. Eligible families could have seen an average tax cut of $680 for 2023 taxes, based on estimates from the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. But expanding the child tax credit is still a "top priority for Democrats," particularly as the 2025 tax cliff approaches, he said.

Senate Rejects Bipartisan Tax Deal
  + stars: | 2024-08-01 | by ( Andrew Duehren | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The Senate rejected a bill on Thursday that would have restored lapsed tax breaks for businesses and expanded the child tax credit, as many Republicans in the chamber lined up against the bipartisan deal in hopes of gaining an advantage in bigger tax legislation expected next year. It soared through the House earlier this year with broad bipartisan support, a rare feat. Business groups loved it and hoped Congress would again allow companies to immediately deduct the full cost of capital investments and research expenses from their tax bills. Republicans senators worried that the bill’s expansion of the child tax credit veered into creating a new welfare program, stalling the legislation. Mr. Schumer also ultimately voted against the bill, a decision that allows him to potentially bring it back up for another vote.

CNN —As the burgeoning Kamala Harris campaign works behind the scenes to refine its policy platform, the vice president has increasingly found herself clarifying which of her positions have shifted over the years. A Harris campaign official said Monday she no longer supports a fracking ban. Single-payer health careHarris’ campaign also confirmed this week that the vice president no longer supports a single-payer health care system. As vice president, Harris supported a bipartisan border bill that would have ramped up enforcement at the US-Mexico border. In June 2024, the White House announced a crackdown on asylum claims meant to continue reducing the flow – a policy that Harris’ campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, indicated would continue under a Harris administration.

I remember the moment I knew that Kamala Harris was not the candidate for me in the 2020 presidential race. It was just a few days before the second Democratic primary debate, and college student debt had become an issue on the campaign trail. On July 26, 2019, Harris announced her student loan forgiveness program. That’s the new nomenclature for converts to the Harris 2024 fold — a phrase that comes from her mother, and that I’ll dig into later. But I want to be candid about something first: I’m a little embarrassed to be rooting for any politician.

Opinion | Kamala Harris Needs a 3 P.M. Agenda
  + stars: | 2024-07-26 | by ( Peter Coy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Vice President Kamala Harris has what she used to call a 3 a.m. agenda. To be an effective president, she’ll need to add a 3 p.m. agenda. When Harris was running for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2019, she put out a television ad that was pretty effective. She described how her mother, after putting the girls to bed, “would sit up trying to figure out how to make it all work,” presumably sometimes until 3 in the morning. “Because,” she intoned, “you’ve waited long enough to get a good night’s sleep.”At the time, Harris was positioning herself as a liberal in an election that had the Democrats moving well to the left.

A question about the future of antitrustNews that Reid Hoffman, the billionaire LinkedIn co-founder and major Democratic donor, wants Vice President Kamala Harris, if she wins in November, to replace Lina Khan as chair of the F.T.C. Senator Bernie Sanders, independent of Vermont, called it “unacceptable,” and Tim Wu, the Columbia Law School professor and former Biden antitrust official, demanded that the Harris campaign return Hoffman’s donations. Khan is perhaps the most consequential regulator for business in the Biden administration, and her fate as F.T.C. chair underscores anxiety among Democrats about how Harris would approach antitrust policy should she become president. So Khan could be stripped of that role and replaced with a colleague, though that could be awkward.

Washington CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address Congress on Wednesday – seeking to shore up American support for his war in Gaza and redirect the attention of a nation that has been preoccupied for weeks by a stream of domestic political issues. Netanyahu’s address to Congress comes at a crucial crossroads for the war. Netanyahu, meanwhile, has accused the United States of “withholding weapons and ammunitions to Israel,” claims that American officials flatly rejected. After arriving in Washington earlier this week, Netanyahu met with some American relatives of hostages held by Hamas. Harris also campaigned on the measure – titled the LIFT the Middle Class Act, or Livable Incomes for Families Today – during her earlier presidential run. WASHINGTON — A group of Democratic senators are sounding the alarm over T-Mobile's proposal to acquire most of US Cellular, and asking the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission to closely scrutinize and consider challenging the deal. The $4.4 billion deal announced in May 2024 would allow T-Mobile to use part U.S. Cellular's wireless spectrum to improve its coverage in rural areas and give it access to four million new customers. Under the agreement, U.S. Cellular would retain 70% of its wireless spectrum and towers, leasing space on other towers to T-Mobile. In Monday's letter, the lawmakers also ask the Justice Department to consider unwinding that merger, arguing that it cost customers of competing wireless carriers billions of dollars. A spokesperson for T-Mobile did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter from CNBC.
